When To Start Baby On Finger Foods?

11 January 2010

When did you start your baby on finger foods & what was it that you gave them? When will I know my baby is ready for them? My daughter will be 6 months on the 2nd & she has her first two bottom teeth. She already eats 1st & 2nd & 2 or 3 of the 3rd stage foods.

  1. my daughter is a few days younger then yours and I let her self feed the heinz toddler biscuits and baby mum mum crackers. She drinks really well from a sip cup so I make sure she has water and I never take my eyes of off her while she is eating it, she gags from time to time but is learning to chew really well. I’ve tried giving her some small pieces of soft fruit and she tried a couple of those gerber puff things but she wont try to pick them up herself, not sure if it’s too hard to get them because they are so small or what.
*Wow, I never take my eyes “off of” her not “of off” her, I think it must be time for bed*

I just kind of tried it. I would break off little pieces of banana and hand them to her. The first time I tried it she just mushed it in her hand lol. She still doesn’t quite get it, but I can give her the Gerber finger foods like the Wagon Wheels and stuff. Those are big enough for her hands to hold successfully and she just bites little pieces off (of before she had more teeth she just sucked on them).
I can’t compare with food stages because we make our own food, but she is 8 months ld and she has 3 top teeth and two bottom.

I would say you should wait a couple more months. And then start her with these finger snacks from Gerber. They come in like a long container and are shaped into stars and stuff like that. They are suppose to melt in her mouth pretty easily although they require some chewing. So wait a little longer. But my best advice is for you to contact her pediatrician who would be able to give you a quick and much more acurate answer than anyone else. Congrats on your little princess! =]

  4. 6 mos is a good age -the digestive tract can handle foods other than breast milk. provide a spoon, napkin, and cup of water at each meal. forget the jarred foods -they are an unnecessary expense. feed the child the same foods the rest of the family eats in smaller portions. modify the texture with a blender or potato masher.

  5. I put cheerios on the tray while feeding both my girls. I started this at 6mos. Babies don’t need teeth to eat solid food. They can gum soft solids pretty well. Stick with bananas, avacados, cooked sweet potatoes, and cheerios. But keep a close eye on her when you do this. She can choke.
I think your baby is ready.

  6. try little things, like bananas and crackers, Cheerios, etc…you will be able to tell if she is ready
