When Is Your Baby Ready For Solid Foods?

29 November 2009

My baby is going to be 10 months in two weeks. We give her mushy solid foods, like mashed patatoes, etc. But when is she ready for foods like Cherios, and those disolving fruit puffs, stage three baby foods? She has her bottom teeth in and her top teeth are just starting to show. I’m afraid of her choking. Can baby gum or use her front teeth to chew? Please help!

A:    I don’t think teeth is really a factor, esepcially for the dissolving gerber puffs. They say when baby can sit up unassisted and use the pincer grasp. I started my daughter on the puffs when she was like 8 months old. She might have some problems at first because it will be a different texture, but she should be ok

A:    my daughter is 7 mos and i give her the disolving fruit puffs by gerber graduates try her on them she cant choke because they dissolve so quick you can try one first they aare like cereal not bad to the taste

A:   Sorry to be the one to tell you, but you are going to worry about her choking until you worry about her going to school! My daughter is three and I still worry about her choking on things, so get used to that concern. If you want to, you can give her slightly less mushy foods, like slightly mashed banana or small pieces of baked potato instead of mashed potato and see how she does with those. I agree that the fruit puffs are very easy, I give them to my eight month old, and it’s one of the few things he will eat. You can also try giving her teething biscuits or Nilla wafers as long as you supervise very closely to make sure she doesn’t get off too big a piece. Babies start using their jaws to mash bigger pieces, and most foods designed for beginning eaters dissolve pretty easily.

A:   She should be ready for the foods mentioned( special puffs for toddlers and cheerios), because they are specially designed with beginning eaters in mind. Just be careful to only give her one to start with, and see how she reacts. My son was eating all of that by then, with no problems. Each child is different, though. So long as you monitor her carefully until you’re sure she has no problems, she should be fine.

A:

All the things you mentioned are fine for that age. Actually, in the 9 to 12 month range, I would start feeding your child more of what you eat, just mashed up or in little pieces. Even little pieces of soft cheese, smashed bananas, etc.
Stage 3 food is completely unnecessary.
Teeth are not a factor. Your child doesn’t need teeth to chew small things.

A:    She should be ready to try all the things you have mentioned. I would recommend starting with the puffs, and break them in half the first time or two you give them to her. They are pretty big in such a little mouth. My son (almost 8 months) LOVES the Gerber puffs….and he does really great with them-we have never had a choking problem.
The stage 3 foods should be fine too-the chunks in the food are really not that big or hard to “gum” for babies.
You can also start trying to feed her food from bigger pieces, i.e. giving her a bite of your banana. I have been doing that with my son for about 3 weeks now and everytime he sees me with a banana he crawls really fast to me, knowing that he will be getting bites!!
You are doing just fine…don’t worry!
Keep up the good work mom!
A:   that is the perfect place to start, the dissolving puffs. they literally start to dissolve as soon as you put them in their mouth. and at 10 months they should be trying new textures. she won’t choke if you are watching her. start with small stuff, rice, baby food with pieces in it. and they began to use the food to push on the gums, some relief.

  1. my brother started eating mashy foods when he reached his 6th month.

  2. when it has teeth.

  3. She is the perfect age to start giving her puffs and Cheerios. Once she has her chewing motion down, you can also give her bagels to suck on. Pretty much anything really soft and easy for them to gum/chew with the few teeth they have.
