What Types Of Clothes Would A Mom Need For Her Newborn Vs Her Infant?

29 November 2009

I’m in a parenting class and have a project that i was given to do on baby clothes.
So i was wondering what kind of clothes that a new mom should buy for her baby.
any advice?

A:

Onesies in NB size for a newborn, and receiving blankets for swaddling or Halo sleep sacks. For an older baby (over 1 month) I would have footed sleepers in 0-3 month size.
Newborns need to be kept warm until they regain their birth weight. Older babies should be dressed in the same amount of clothes as the parents.

A:        There are alot of factors that could be taken into consideration. For example, the weather, if baby has a sitter or not, number of diaper changes, even the temperament of the child. Since I don’t have a sitter and it’s just daddy and I taking turns while the other is at work and the baby doesn’t go out much, my son has a few “outfits” but primarily pjs. I think all babies should have onesies( unless it’s super hot out). When they are newborns you need something easily accessible and something that can be changed with little hassle. After about 3 months and the weather gets better then I say still keep the pjs for lounging around in the house, but for trips out they definitely need “outfits”.

A:       When my son was a newborn we always dressed him in one piece outfits that snapped or zipped up the front, it was so much easier than trying to pull a onesie over that wobbly little head. We found t-shirts useless since they always rode up. Now that he is a couple months old we like onsies (easier diaper changes).

A:       Sleepers, that is all they need, I change my daughter almost 4 times a day. For a newborn to have clothes is a waste of money. Infants hmmmm….. Same thing sleepers until she is about 1 years old. Unless you go to a birthday party and you want your baby to be dressed up.

Newborns typically wear nothing but sleepers with feet on them.. also those little snap tees with the built in mittens, also little beanie hats. I also swear by Sleepsacks for any age through 9 months.. they are wearable blankets that replace blankets for sleeping, reducing the risks of SIDS.
Once they reach Infant stage.. I think the Infant stage starts at 3 months, you will dress them more in comfy pant and shirt type clothing, cute outfits, shoes, etc. You will still want lots of sleepers with feet though, those are good for all ages. They start wearing more bibs because drooling starts.. especially when teething and feeding.
Best Wishes!

A:      it depends on the season and where you live. Babies (newborns and infants) should always be dressed in one more layer than you are dressed. Gowns are always useful, as it makes diaper changes easy, as well as sleepers, as those cover the arms, body, legs and feet. However, with gowns, socks will be needed to cover the feet.
Good luck in your class.
A:       Tons of short sleeved onesies. You can’t have too many as they will need to be changed often. I would buy 0-3 mo vs newborn size since many babies these days are too big for NB at birth. Mine was 7lb 4oz and 19 1/4 in and is on the verge of outgrowing NB at just one week old. Also the sleepers with zippers are handy too (better than snaps).

  1. Vest
    baby gro’s
    cardy
    shawl
    socks
    hat
    thin mittens

  2. gowns, they are easy on & off when changing diapers.

  3. Sleepers, that is all they need, I change my daughter almost 4 times a day. For a newborn to have clothes is a waste of money. Infants hmmmm….. Same thing sleepers until she is about 1 years old. Unless you go to a birthday party and you want your baby to be dressed up.

  4. lorenzo and lily's mommy

onesies, tshirts, pj, gowns, hats, mittens, socks, more tshirts and onesies since you will go through 10 a day

  5. Definitely onesies and sleepers. Babies have a five day old check up, a six week check up, and then check ups every two months. Because they will be weighed and have a hemoglobin stick, and shots, I always take them to the first three appointments in a onesie and socks. Not to mention all the times you will be changing the baby’s diapers, changing clothes after a spit up, etc. Onesies are the best for quick changes, and they are cotton, so the material breathes. If it’s cold, I’ll put a sleeper over. Always swaddle with a receiving blanket.

  6. I never used anything but onesies and footie sleeper pjs for my daughter up until she was a year old. Anything else just seemed useless, especially since they were always getting dirty or she was growing out of them.

  7. Infants are changed 10-12 times daily, so it is often an easier choice to select gowns over cute little outfits with legs that require lots of snaps. However, you need the cute little outfits with legs if you are going somewhere with the car because gowns don’t work so well in a car seat.
