What is fair to ask for babysitting?

Q&A: What is fair to ask for babysitting?
I live in Reno, Nevada.
I am 18, was a nanny for a year, a mothers helper, been babysitting since i was 10, and took two years of child development classes in high school (in which we taught preschool.) and I’m taking online college classes in child development.
What is fair to ask for babysitting an hour? I know the rate for childcare is different everywhere, and before I just let the parents pay me themselves. But now I’m scared of being ripped off.
What would be fair to ask for a toddler? Infant? If there is more than one child?
I know childcare gets really expensive, and I don’t want to scare people off by charging to much, or make people think I’m not good at caring for children by charging too little.

I used to charge an hour. for an infant. Usually about addition for each child but if it is a long period of time I usually did a flat rate.

We pay our babysitter an hour. But she is only 15. I remember when I was a nanny in the early 90’s I made about .25/hr. I would say if it is a consistent job I wouldn’t take any less than /hr.

Well here in Fort Collins, I have been finding the rate to run anywhere from 10-15 dollars an hour for 4 children. I called around for rates, and that is the average. Since you have more experience, you could probably charge closer to the 15 dollar an hour range. I would say 5 dollars for one child, and maybe 2 dollars for each additional child..
My best advice.. Call around, see how much daycares and other services and see how much they charge.. Then base your opinion off of that. I hope that helps..

I would not take any less then an hour. If there is more then one child more per child. If it is a on going job then charge a flat rate per week. For example 1 child 8 hours a day for 5 days 0 week…something like that…Good Luck.
