Question: What can make you go into preterm labor?
I am almost 28 weeks pregnant, so I’m heading into that last trimester. I already take really good care of myself and never do anything strenuous. I do not know much about preterm labor and birth and have no reason to believe it would happen to me, however I was wondering if there are things that make you go into preterm or is it just a natural (and unfortunate) thing that happens? I just want to educate myself. My baby girl means the world to me and I will do anything to keep her safe and healthy. Thank you.

A lot of things can make you go into preterm labor. I had premature labor with my daughter from 22 weeks on, they didn’t know why I was having it, and some premature labor is unexplained. At 27 weeks, they found out I had a major tear in my cervix, but this was due to me giving birth to my first child that was stillborn, she came down and I wasn’t fully dilated and she tore me up. Some women have torn cervix’s for other reasons, and some women have incompetent cervix’s, which can cause premature labor, but now that you are going into your last trimester, in a few weeks, you will start to feel Braxton-Hicks contractions, so don’t confuse those with premature labor contractions. Premature labor contractions, you can time them, like if you are in real labor, and if it has a rhythm to it, then you tell your doctor or go to the ER immediately. With Braxton-Hicks, the contractions will be very erratic, and no rhythm to them. Good luck with your baby, I wish you nothing but the best.

Possible risk factor for premature labor:

More than two second trimester miscarriages or elective abortions
Previous Cone Biopsy or LEEP (procedures used to diagnose and/or treat the cervix of women with abnormal Pap tests)

Dehydration
History of cervical change and/or excessive uterine contractions at less than 33 weeks in a previous pregnancy
Serious infections with fever (greater than 101 degrees Fahrenheit) during this pregnancy
Recurring bladder and/or kidney infections
Excessive amount of amniotic fluid
Unexplained vaginal bleeding after 20 weeks of pregnancy
Using recreational drugs, such as cocaine or amphetamines

Hi! I am 27 weeks 4 days all I can say is take care of yourself. I had a scar 3 weeks ago with a 2:00 a.m. trip to the ER & had to be on monitors for 16 hours due to ME over doing it. I am a very active person & was told to keep going due to it helping out with the labor part latter on well I just kept going about my daily life & felt great until that 2:00 a.m. hospital call. Come to find out it was my round lig. stretching & the baby on my Sciatic nerve which really did me in for a few days & it was gone. I stupidly went back to doing my daily whatever & for the past 3 days back to needing bed rest. I too LOVE this baby BOY & don’t want to risk his health or mine so I will slow down & just enjoy the last few months until I can hold my precious baby in my arms. The BEST of luck to you ! Do not over do it, drink plenty liquids, rest & do not stress just sit back & enjoy!!

There are things that can make you go into preterm labor, some natural some not.
Women under 19; women over age 35 are at risk for pre-term labor.
Women who have had previous preterm labor may be at risk.
Women with certain uterine/cervical abnormalities are also a risk.
Some signs of pre-term labor:
- * Contractions (your abdomen tightens like a fist) every 10 minutes or more often
* Change in vaginal discharge (leaking fluid or bleeding from your vagina)
* Pelvic pressure—the feeling that your baby is pushing down
* Low, dull backache
* Cramps that feel like your period
* Abdominal cramps with or without diarrhea
I was due May 25 but just last Monday I had to have my baby girl delivered. The only sign I had was vaginal bleeding…to put it simply I had lost so much blood the ambulance had to take me to the local hospital. My OB was called and they decided to send me to a better equipped hospital if the problem worsened and the baby had to come.
I was transfered to that other hospital on Sunday at 9m. Around 1am Monday, they made the decision to do a c-section because if they waited any longer, the baby or I could have died. At 3:42 AM my baby girl was delivered.
I knew the signs of preterm labor but the only one I had was the vaginal bleeding. I didn’t feel any contractions( although once at the hospital they hooked me up to a fetal machine and the contractions were monitored on there but I didn’t even feel them).
Usually if you go in for preterm labor they can calm the uterus down and try to stop the labor from coming.
If you have any of the signs let your OB know or the hospital. I would consider reading upon the subject and asking your OB. Your OB would be happy to answer any questions regarding your pregnancy. They want you to be educated that way you will know when you need to call them if something is wrong.
