What Are Some Baby Foods That Won’t Constipate My Son?

25 December 2009

He has a sensitive tummy and gets constipated easily. We’re just starting solids and his dr. said to start prunes, but she didn’t say any other foods. He’s doing well on the prunes and I’m thinking he’ll be ready to try a new food in a couple of days. I’ve heard bananas and applesauce can be somewhat constipating but I can’t find any info on foods that will be “smooth going”, if you know what I mean. The last time he got constipated broke my heart, and I don’t wanna go through that again if I can help it. Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Girl I feel your pain on seeing your child go through that pain, my son was quite constipated once I started him on the rice cereal, it was awful. You can try the barley & oatmeal cereal since it’s the iron that they need from the cereals. The nurse recommended the dark Karo syrup watered down but that’s nothing but sugar so I went the natural fruit & veggies way and it worked out perfectly.
I then gave him the prunes, pears, apples, apricots, no bananas because they’re binding butternut squash, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes then I gave him watered down pear and prune juice here and there but I watered it down to 1oz juice 3oz water also straight water is good to start now too. Once I started all that my son hasn’t been constipated again.

  2. I had that happen, the apples should not constipate, which is weird, try peaches, pears, peas, squash. Stay away from the bananas. Fruits should help him.

  3. well, im from the south and of course we do things the “old” way and i know that you really shouldnt listen to “old wives tales” but when mine were little i put a little karo corn syrup in their milk when i gave them a bottle and it worked fine…you could also try prune juice of course

my daughter tends to get constipated easliy too. hears the rule we follow:
anything that starts with “P” is “smooth going” as you put it =D
    peas, prunes, pears, peaches.
if you are nursing, you should eat these things too along with pineapple (don’t give baby pineapple, it’s too acidic for his little tummy)
mangoes or oatmeal are good for both of you.
we switch from “smooth going foods” to “constipating foods” when she has had a bowel movement. so our schedule is something like:
    Mon: bananas
    Tues: oatmeal – bowel movement
    Wed: chicken and rice
    Thurs: apple
    Fri: mango – bowel movement

  5. Oatmeal jar cereals
    Barley jar cereals
Both of these come with different fruit combinations. I buy the jar kind and switch between Gerber and Earth’s Best. Earth’s Best has a better selection and they look a lot better than the Gerber baby cereals in the jar but, that’s just my opinion.

    How old is your son?
Alright, well… Without knowing his age, my first thought is that if food is constipating him then it may be too early for food.
Some babies aren’t ready until much closer to a year.
I would wait a while and try when he starts really demanding food. You can’t do any harm by delaying solids, but you can do alot of harm by starting too early… esspecially with a child who already has a sensative tummy.

  7. butternut squash, sweet potatos, green beans, peas, peaches, apricots

  8. All I can say is..Wait it out. The first couple of weeks on solids will be hard and he might get constipated, but the best you can do is keep going with the solids. If he does get constipated, you can add White Karo syrup to his bottles, or just extra water. And you can give him prunes.
Eventually his body will get used to the solid foods and he’ll be pooping on a regular basis.
    Try to start with Veggies.
(This is if you don’t want your baby to be a picky eater)
