Big Toy Box

I keep a big toy box in my office. At IDEO, they have a LOT more toys scattered about. This toy box is a treasure chest of material muses and epiphany catalysts.

The exothermic chain-reaction gel pack was a real treat. Flicking a catalyst triggered a creeping phase change on my hand at the same pace as the silver hand coating on Neo in The Matrix. In this case, the clear gel blossomed to a hardened white and gave off much heat.

Designers and scientists and creative people orchestrate and amplify the act of playing.

Forgotten, lost in memories, in time, disappears. Time wins in the end.
I found this toy placed in a dark corner, photoshop did the rest. Are elements of joy or play disappear in time?
We should sherish all those happy memories and retain them. Photography as the best catalyzer to trigger them.

My edited the following,In the blog: ask a toddler & healthy food for children.

great shot, Fred.. muting the colours really makes this shot!!

ScarlettVeinz – Thanx, that was the intent. I wanted to emphasize on the remembrance of happy memories that ultimately fade in time.

  17. nice one fred

it was a pleasure to meet you last night

  18. the big blurry part at the bottom is far too much. I think the DOF or maybe the crop is wrong.

  19. I appreciate what you are trying to do with the shallow depth-of-field but there’s just too much of the foreground that is a blur that doesn’t serve your subject. The little patch of light is nice but not enough. The toy is really hard to make out (is it a toy… pelican?) and because I can’t relate to it like I might relate to a teddy bear or something more familiar, I don’t feel the nostalgia.

cecily7 – I tried to make the object distant, like moving away from the viewer, therefore away from the immediate memory.

What a load of conceptual bollocks.

  24. pretty crappy looking toy, no wonder it got left behind… same goes for the picture – agree with cecily – too much foreground and there is also a bad angle

  28. I like this — it’s such an odd thing that someone somewhere designed and manufactured, and yet didn’t get kept by whoever bought it or got it as a gift. I would like it more if it weren’t quite so processed. However, I’m voting it "Save Me" in group Delete Me.

    don’t like the foreground.

  30. @sebastian – I didn’t comment all day (was out shooting crap photos) and I was feeling wordy this evening.
