In this modern age of plastic toys with integrated iPod and Wi-Fi connectivity, there is a part of us all that cries out for a simpler time. Toys didn’t used to need a user manual to set them up, or regular updates from the manufacturer to work properly. Toys were just fun; good, old-fashioned fun.
I remember spending long train rides as a child being mystified by the small spinning top that my mother kept in her handbag for such occasions. I still even carry a Yo Yo in my work bag as I find the simple act of playing with one therapeutic. To dive back in to another moment of self-indulgence, this past Christmas, my 8 year-old nephew was given as a stocking filler, an old-fashioned Wooden Yo Yo. (Note: his skill has now surpassed my own, and I now have to learn the tricks from him).
