Leukemia Ball 2008

Leukemia society celebrates success, Washington Times, Lisa Rauschart

"Is there anyone in the room who doesn’t have a Mercedes?" comedian Jay Leno queried on Saturday, before helping raffle off a few, including a CLS550 model valued at more than ,000.

The occasion? The 21st annual ball of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the largest non-political fundraiser in the Washington metropolitan area.

The setting? The Walter E. Washington Convention Center, transformed for the night into a glitzy, jazzy space for 2,500 guests in keeping with the ball’s Roaring ’20s theme.

"This is the event that sets the standard," said benefactor Bennett Zier, CEO of Red Zebra.

The crowd arrived to the sight of white-garbed flappers high-heeling it to Charlestons and other beats familiar to an earlier generation of bright young things. Upstairs, a slightly older but no less bright assemblage of local business community leading lights, including ball co-chairmen Fernando Murias of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Joe Kelley of Eli Lilly, circulated among the hundreds of silent auction items that included travel getaways, meals donated by top restaurant chefs and plenty of VIP tickets to local sporting and entertainment events. There was even a miniature red, pedal-operated Mercedes for the toddler who simply must get to the end of the driveway in style.

The cause of all the hoopla, of course, was the organization’s efforts to fight blood cancer, the No. 1 disease killer of young Americans. At the chairmen’s pre-dinner cocktail reception, the talk was mostly about the society’s fundraising accomplishments, all the more noteworthy this past year because the recent economic downturn has left many longtime funders strapped.

Still, the event raised .3 million, so there was a lot to celebrate.

Partygoers talked their way through beef tenderloin, crab medallion and an art deco dessert "bombe." Vice President Dick Cheney sent his regards via video, helping to honor Sen. Craig Thomas, who died last year after a short bout with acute myeloid leukemia. Mr. Thomas’ widow, Susan, was in attendance.

Mr. Leno provided comic relief with extensive riffs on Michael Jackson, cats, elderly relatives, American eating habits and taxes. ("If you think health care is expensive now, wait ’til it’s free.) By the time he drew out the final raffle ticket for a pricey Mercedes, ’20s-era sensibilities gave way to 21st century realities. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes took the stage, dinner jackets disappeared, black ties loosened, and ball-goers who stayed past the end-of-auction flurry partied as if the night were young.

!!Health tips :It’s very easy to get sucked into the constant advertising of baby powders, creams, and lotions. But the best baby lotion is plain old olive oil—cheap, natural, and un-perfumed. As for other products, keep it as natural, organic, and fragrance-free as possible.

The banana tantrum illustration

The banana tantrum occurred yesterday around 5pm. I took Toby in his buggy into Bill’s so I could get a cup of tea and a chocolate brownie and Toby could get some of his 5 a day into him as part of teatime. I ask the server if we could get some watermelon, as Toby had been rather keen on eating a little slice that was decorating a glass of juice when we had been there 2 days previously. This was instead of eating the potato, cheese and beans procured by his loving parents, but I digress.

What I didn’t bet on was the finickiness of the one-year-old. What was greeted with joy and abandon two days previously was pretty much pooh-poohed 2 days hence. In fact, both literally and figuratively. But the point of the matter was that the watermelon was a non-starter. I can generally judge how successful an offering to the toddler gods has been by how much I end up wearing versus how much Toby is wearing. I was wearing a lot of melon and Toby had nary a pip on him.

Once he was done illustrating the displeasure of the gods, he started throwing his head back and arching his back squawking with the all-proprietorial pointing that accompanies the state of wanting but not having. Oh lawks, I thought, he’s spotted the Brownie. Duly, I slivered off a bit that didn’t have nuts in and handed it over. He was kind enough to eat it and dribble a bit to demonstrate, this meal at least, he was willing to eat something but it didn’t really cover what he wanted because as soon as he had eaten his sliver he began again with the squawking and pointing.

I turned to where his hand was indicating and behind me was a huge stack of bananas. I asked the server to add one to my bill and handed it to Toby, having loosened the peel. It was one of the biggest bananas I have ever seen and Toby demolished it in about 2 minutes, showing great displeasure when it was over, and even trying to eat the peel just in case.

The irony is not lost on me. There I was trying to feed my son melon, giving it up as a bad cause and placating him with chocolate brownie and all he wanted was a banana because he’d seen one and it wasn’t something I actively offered him. Just like the melon 2 days previously.

So, next time we go to Bill’s I’ll order him several cakes, muffins and brownie slices and just make sure we sit near the counter with all the green vegetables. Then when he demands a plate of Savoy cabbage Mummy will just have to finish up the baked goodies.

When Christmas rolled around last year, we told our son, David, that there was no need for him to spend any money on presents for us – we already have all of the toys and gadgets that we need, and we know that he’s on a tight budget (otherwise, I might have asked for an Aston Martin, or a diamond-studded Apple iPad, or perhaps a private jet).

David responded with several creative ideas, one of which was an offer to cook a "decadent meal" for us. We accepted happily, and he arrived in our apartment on Tuesday evening and promptly set about whipping together a wonderful presentation of Bucatini all’Amatriciana — which, I have been asked to emphasize, substituted traditional spaghetii in place of the bucatini pasta called for in the official recipe. My wife had shopped for most of the ingredients, and done a little chopping and basic preparation; and I contributed to the meal by stopping at the local liquor store to find a good bottle of Italian Barolo wine.

Since I have no culinary skills whatsoever, common sense dictated that I stay out of the kitchen, safely away from the people doing the "serious" work of preparing the meal. But I couldn’t help sticking my camera into the middle of things from time to time, and I ended up with this set of photos…

By the way, if you want to recreate this yourself, check out Recipe: Bucatini all’Amatriciana in the January 16, 2008 issue of the New York Times.
