Question–: what do you do while your toddler is eating?
my 12 month old takes forever to self-feed her dinner. sometimes i sit with her and read a magazine and talk to her. but sometimes i get so antsy. if i go to the kitchen, where i can see her in her high chair (not enough room in the kitchen for it) she fake coughs because she knows i’ll come right over! what do you do while your kiddo is eating?

Usually…we all eat together.
If he takes longer than we do…I roll him over by the sink so that I can start cleaning.
But usually we just have a family dinner together

We always eat together as a family at dinner and on weekends. As she’s finishing up I’ll start the dishes or clean up. I read sometimes too if my husband’s not home as I’m eating. In the morning she does eat breakfast alone, and I get our stuff ready for the day. I always stay in the same room though.

My son and I eat breakfast together. Also, the entire family eats dinner together. However, during the day, b/c my son is a “snacker” and not a real lunch eater, he eats in the family room at “his little table”. He knows that he can’t get up while eating…

if you know she fake coughs for your attention do not give her your attention. leave her alone. make sure she is ok and walk away into the kitchen. as far as when my kids were that young and eating..i left them to clean up something else, check my email, do whatever. mind you I live in an apartment and can see my children from the table everywhere I go except for the bedrooms.

Usually I sit with my daughter at the table for our meals together, but I eat a lot quicker than she does and I know what you mean about getting antsy!! Usually when I am finished I will start the dishes, but still talking to her and just try and stay in her general area!

We all ate at the same time, as a family, not always but most of the time.
If you want to get some things done in the kitchen, take the highchair to the doorway of the kitchen and your child can eat as you get things done.

toddler eating–: Parents: is there a compelling to stop my toddler from eating dog food?
He tried it tonight and really likes it. he keeps going back for more and it’s his responsibility to feed the dog, so he knows where to get more once the dish is empty. I figure I should mostly ignore him, but he’s grossing me out! What would you do?

Only if you’re feeding some nasty cheap food like Beneful or something.
Look at the ingredient list. If ‘digest’ appears, then this is the innards of the animals with poop inside of them. If ‘by-products’ appear, then these are things not approved for human consumption. There are so many disgusting food products in dog foods that I’d really be careful. The fats in dog/cat foods have been rendered until they are rancid and will make your child (and dog really) sick (they use binders in order to keep the animals from having plain diarrhea all the time.) So you’ve got to be very careful, especially if your child may get into it.
I have a pretty natural dog food, uses human-grade meats, etc. If my daughter eats it (or the cat food for that matter) it’s alright, though I wouldn’t encourage it. But if we were in an emergency situation even I would feel comfortable eating it. But I wouldn’t encourage it in the least. Even the very best kibble just isn’t that good.
