That sugar leads to hyperness is a very popular misconception. It is CAFFEINE that makes people hyper, and sugar gets nabbed as the culprit because the two ingredients are often in the same product (eg: pop).

It’s not like sugar is a vital nutrient he’ll be missing, but still, make sure she’s not just giving him artificial sweetener now instead (eg: diet juice), because that’s made up entirely of fake and dangerous chemicals. Better real sugar than that.

Actually sugar doesn’t make one hyper…on the contrary, it makes you tired!

I saw this on TV where they did an experiment on this…..all parents commented on how their kids are so quiet and tired when they came home after eating exclusively sugary stuff at the party………(the parents were told they had healthy stuff at the party!) and vice versa (hyper when they were actually fed healthy stuff)

Also, it’d extremely difficult to have a sugar free diet……..fruits are full of natural sugars…..

Not sure how a kid could be on a sugar free diet, there is sugar in most foods, even fresh veggies contain natural sugars.

Anyway, sugar doesn’t cause a child to be hyper, this is a myth.

Answer by asrai
Toddlers are hyper whether or not they have sugar. It could be seeing what you want to see.

Answer by Karen
Limiting the amount of added sugars in a child’s diet is fine as long as they are not being substituted with artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are much worse for the child than natural sugar is.

Answer by Erin
Just don’t give your child artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame because it may cause neurological problems.

Q&A–: For those of you with a toddler with autisim, have you tried changing their diet to gluten/dairy free?
Did it help? My son is on the spectrum, and I just wondered what your experiences were. He is almost 3. I have daughter as well, his twin, she is not on the spectrum. And how did it go over, if you did try the diet? His diet is so limited now, already. He is not a fan of new things.

I taught pre-school with 2 autistic kids, both 3 years old. They were both diagnosed while in my class. They went gluten free and it seemed to help. They also had intensive therapy and other interventions, so I don’t know if the diet was what did it or the sum total of all the care they got.

New things are always difficult for these kids. All you can do is try to ride it out. Lots of things come “gluten free” these days, maybe substitute the things he’s already eating with the gluten free version and then try other things.

Good luck.
