Q&A–: Any one know of any toddler and diet friendly foods?
My husband and I are trying to eat healthier (I rarely (as in less than once a month) eat fast food and when I do Its the healthier option). I also have a picky eating toddler. What foods are good for me to buy that would be good for all of us without having a skyrocketing food bill? So no breaded, fried, starchy foods for me but pleasing to a toddler palette as well. Thanks for all of the help in advance.

My kids favorite new thing is soy beans – edame (sp?) in the pod. Ill put a little soy sauce in there too, although we shoot them out of the pod so it doesnt get too salty. Whats good for adults, is it keeps you busy at dinner – so you dont eat so much, and they are fun for toddlers.
We’ll also get some of the Target brand, archer farms, frozen veggie bags. They have some good mixes with things like carrots shaped like balls. My 3 year old will also help me make guacamole, we dont put much in his but a little lime, oil, salt and pepper, then do ours up with onions and cilantro.
Lately I read something too on navy beans – that you actually burn more calories from them that you eat, and they are one of those nutrient power houses, Im wondering if I can mash them up somehow and sneak them in.

meats: beef, lamb, fish, chicken, pork
meat alternatives: peas, beans, lentils, and other legumes
veggies: all kinds
fruits: all kinds
grains: choose whole-grain cereals
dairy and eggs: if your toddler is heavy, you can go with 2% milk if he’s over a year but otherwise, stick to homogenized until he’s 2 or longer if he’s petite.
it’s pretty basic. just put a variety of foods in front of him, let him eat what he wants, and remove the rest with no comment.
ETA: lillilou – s/c “negative calorie” foods like lima beans and celery are a myth. the caloric value is what’s left over after all processes are done.

Cooked carrots are a good choice. My daughter and I just ate brown rice mixed with cooked carrots. You could also buy some whole grain pasta, cook that, add in two cans of diced tomatoes, some cut up zucchini and maybe some cooked ground turkey. Cheesy cooked broccoli is also a good choice. Pumpkin soup is easy, cheap and good. Have a fruit salad for lunch-maybe with cherries, grapes, strawberries, and some type of melon along with a yogurt dip.

I have found for a really good treat, look for sugar free Popsicle. At our wal-mart, they have creamsicles and fudgesicles as well.

I would first stay away from formula if you can just because of her age its best to just try to get to regular milk. Have you tried doing half and half. Half breast milk and half whole milk. This is how we got my nephew on to regular cow’s milk. Milk in any toddlers diet is very important of course. Talk to the pediatrician if you are seriously worried and they can suggest others methods to go about the transition.

Whole milk is important for her diet until she learns to eat all the food groups.
Answer by Bebe
Of course she can supplement it with other things with high calcium. It is very very important that children get enough calcium. At that young age their bodies and bones are growing like crazy and they need to keep their bones strong. You can supplement milk with other calcium sources. Such as, yougurt, cheese, even collard greens, oranges, and pees have calcium.

its extremely important. a child’s brain is still developing at age 2 and needs milk. also bone formation and all that good stuff. but the major thing is the brain function.

No she needs milk, give it to her, and if she doesn’t drink it, then mix it until she drinks it. There are other supplements, but Milk is the best.
Answer by Janis, Chad’s wife
You could but I would definitely speak to her pediatrician about which foods you should use to supplement. I would definitely encourage you to use phrases with her like, “Honey, you’re a big girl now and you need to take the big girl milk”. She needs to be drinking 2-3 glasses if not more of 2% milk a day, once she is 2. If she’s still under two they say whole milk is best. Congrats on keeping her with the breastmilk that long. It is a very healthy way to feed your child!

I caught him on that chair with his hand in the mostly empty diet coke earlier…
I think I scared him – he didn’t know I was in the room when I barked… so he wouldn’t get up there again.
