Nutrition is important to everyone. Maintaining a diet and exercising helps our body to be strong and healthy. As a result, the body tends to have fewer complications and we live longer. More importantly, the earlier we start a healthy lifestyle the better.
There are many responsibilities that we as parents have. We need to provide, food, clothing and shelter for our children. And having proper nutrition plays a big part in raising a toddler. With a well planned diet, your toddler will grow up to be healthy and happy.
During the early stages of our lives our bodies are constantly changing and growing at faster rate than when we get older. Research shows that babies grow 3 inches about every 3 months, while toddlers grow at a slower rate, usually 3-5 inches for a year. This is way it’s important to start off right with a healthy diet.
Prior to the toddler stage the main source of nutrition was either breast milk or formula, but now it’s time to introduce more solids types of food. It’s time to introduce different tastes and textures to our toddlers.
There are a few important vitamins and minerals which are an important part of a toddler’s diet, milk, which provides vitamin D and calcium; iron, which is a mineral. You can find iron in meats, poultry, fish, beans, and tofu. Furthermore, tomatoes, broccoli, oranges and strawberries contain vitamin C which helps the body absorb iron.
On the average, a toddler will require between 1000 – 1400 calories a day. Based on a 1000 calorie diet, the USDA recommends:
Grains – 3oz
Vegetables – 1 cup
Fruit – 1 cup
Milk – 2 cups
Meat & Beans – 2oz
So a sample toddler diet would look something like this:
Breakfast:
1oz oatmeal
½ cup apple
½ cup whole milk
Morning snack:
½ whole wheat toast
½ cup pear
Lunch:
½ whole wheat pasta
¼ peas
½ cup whole milk
1 oz meat and green beans
Afternoon snack:
¼ cup carrots
½ cup fat free milk
Dinner:
1oz rice
½ broccoli
½ whole milk
1oz chicken lima beans
For a child growing up, diet is important. As parents we need to provide the best we can so our toddlers grow up healthy. Since I’m not an expert, the best advice you can get is visiting your child’s pediatrician to discuss a meal plan for your child.

Actress and TV personality Sheree Murphy talks to Nutritionist Fiona Wilcock about the importance of iron in the toddler diet. It also involves a real life case study Mum and her 22 month old toddler. Most Mums aren’t aware of how important iron is in the toddler diet — it helps with brain development and other aspects of healthy growth. Research by The Big Iron Count survey has shown that 8 out of 10 toddlers aren’t getting enough iron. The conversation covers which foods are rich in iron, and how to feed an iron rich diet.
