Q&A–: Anyone else super paranoid about offering your baby food for fear of them choking?
I realize this might sound ridiculous, but as I have started to contemplate when I will offer my 7 month old finger foods, I have become really, really, really paranoid about it and I’m having such a hard time with it, I wonder if I’ll ever be ok with her eating actual food. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I attended a safety training session with a local fireman for certification at my job for the emergency preparedness team…he told his horrifying story of a baby who choked to death at her 1 year birthday party. Her parents couldn’t help her (or didn’t know how to) and the EMTs were too late…this has really stuck with me and I am always hearing about infants/toddlers having choking incidents. Most of them turn out ok, of course, but it’s just terrifying to me.
I USED to be this way about SIDS…even though I know there is still a risk, I haven’t been nearly as paranoid about it since my daughter turned 6 months and moved out of the most affected age group. But I would lose sleep, and even break down crying about the possibility…and I feel like as soon as I finally got over that, here comes something else for me to obsess about. Uggggghhh.
Any other mommies feel or have felt this way?
And what are the best finger foods to start out with that she’s the least likely to choke on? How small should the pieces be?
