ask a toddler|Toddler is sick again, different behaviors this time, should we ask for further testing?

1 November 2011

There‘s Mastercard & Visa. 。!!Advice :Both parents should put the baby down for naps, feed her and change her. The more family resources she has, the more secure she will feel.
Question–: Toddler is sick again, different behaviors this time, should we ask for further testing?
My 20 month old gets sick approximately every 2 weeks, so I am no stranger to viruses, flu’s and infections. However, my daughter’s most recent sickness is less easy to identify and her behavior is different than when she usually gets sick. My question is, should we be more aggressive and request more testing or blood work? I am tired of feeling like I am over-reacting because “toddlers get sick”.

The details from her most recent illness are: We traveled to California over the weekend. By Sunday she started to get really irritable and stopped eating. On Monday and Tuesday she had a fever (104 at night, 101.8 during the day when Tylenol wore off). She had no other symptoms. Took her to the doctor and ears, lungs, nose looked fine, throat, slighty red. They dipped a tiny urine sample and found trace amounts of blood and altered white blood count. We started giving her Augmentin for a possible UTI. Very irritable Wednesday and Thursday. She woke up Thursday morning with a rash. Took her to the doctor and found out the urine culture showed no UTI. We stopped the antibiotic and gave Benadryl. She was inconsolable most of the day (usually does not react to negatively to Benadryl). and hasn’t eaten a full meal in over 2 days, and she is a bit unstable when she walks.

The behaviors that are different this time are: she is acting aggressive, she is biting, pulling, hitting things. She acts like she doesn’t know what she wants to make her feel better, she is grabbing at her head, She continually grabs at the front of her diaper and makes a grimace face, yet she doesn’t have a UTI. She woke up in the middle of the night screaming but acted confused and didn’t know what she wanted in the middle of the night but didn’t have a fever. She is making strange faces/expressions that I have never seen, things she normally likes she is pushing away with disgust or refuses to do, she is falling asleep on me or the couch. She plays for a few minutes and then comes to me crying.

Here is some health background that may be helpful: She has low weight gain and is not on a growth curve (she is 20 pounds right now). We started to investigate her low weight and found she does not have any GI issues per the 3 biopsies done during an upper endoscopy. She does not have any allergies. They found she had low IgA antibodies when they did blood work for ciliac. Her weight started dropping at 7 months old, and her frequent illnesses really started to get bad at 15 months old. This is her second fever this month.

What are all of the different parenting methods available?

8 August 2010

Anne edited the following
Q&A: What are all of the different parenting methods available?

I know we belabor the point here, sometimes…

But, whenever I read people replies from people in the neverending spanking/not spanking debate, it seems like there are some who think the only choices for teaching our children are:

Spanking
Timeouts
Taking away toys/priveleges
1-2-3 Magic

That’s it. Just straight pavlovian stimuli/response to train the children what to do and what not to do, until they’re grown.

Just wanted to get a list of other parenting methods that people use, to let people know that there are other choices that involve actually teaching your child to make good decisions without the contrived stimuli/response reward/punishment system.

So, what are some of the other alternatives (besides, I guess, totally ignoring & neglecting your kids or abusing them). What are some parenting methods that you’ve used or seen working in real life, besides the above ones?
Along with using facets of attachment parenting (http://www.attachmentparenting.com/ ), we, for the most part, use the methods described in the book Parenting with Love and Logic (http://www.loveandlogic.com/ ) which helps you guide your children to an understanding of how their choices affect themselves and others, using the natural consequences of their actions to help them really internalize the lesson and be able to apply it to other choices in their lives.

It’s worked pretty well, so far, on our natural kids.

Didn’t work too well on a niece who we fostered through her early teen years, but, as she had Reactive Attachment Disorder, I’m not sure what would have worked on her.
Oh, and we’ll use 1-2-3 magic and timeouts from time to time. Life is hectic & sometimes you just need a quick solution.

When trying to create good habits, we’ll go with a sticker chart.

And, like Biz, we’ve found that sometimes ‘natural consequences’ aren’t obvious enough, so we’ll creatively enhance them a bit if needed :D

How Should I Go About Giving My Baby Different Foods?

5 January 2010

I have a 7 month old cockatiel. I have had baby for 1 month now. I want to change her diet over to pellets. Yesturday. I put some seeds in her dish as always, but also added pellets too. Is this a good way to change this. I thought that I would slowly add more and more pellets to her dish. Does this sound right. Thanks

How Do You Get A Baby Between 7-8 Mos To Try Different Baby Foods?

26 December 2009

My daughter is about to officially be 8 months in 4 days, and I am concern that her only solid she takes is guacamole. She hates all gerbers food, and the little crackers too for the teething. The daycare lady said to just keep trying, but I do, with no success. It’s either her baba, or guac. Plus, she like it with GARLIC in it? New biological dad here, wife away, confused dude…please help!
