It is true that most parents see their child as the next Einstein but the reality is that less than 5% percent of the children can be considered as gifted in early years. Even with gifted children things can change as they grow because IQ levels depend largely on the quality of parenting and family environment. Children raised in cordial atmospheres perform better in school and known for appropriate behaviors. Besides love, affection and healthy family environment, diet and nutrition plays an important part in your child’s developmental progress, right from the embryonic stage to after birth to toddlerhood.
There is no substitute to mother’s milk when it comes to providing nutrition to infants. That, however, is after the baby arrives in this world but what happens when the baby is still in the mother’s womb. Pregnancy nutrition plays an important role in the growth of the unborn child and the child’s inherent mental and cognitive abilities.
Pre-pregnancy nutrition relates to strengthening the immune system for preparing the body for pregnancy. The most crucial aspect of pre pregnancy nutrition is to ensure that the mother is healthy and devoid of factors that reduce chances of conception. However, pregnancy nutrition or nutrition at conception and in subsequent months is all about the baby and his growth and developmental processes.
The embryo is typically vulnerable in weeks immediately after conception because this is the time when the organs and body systems start developing. During the early stages of pregnancy the placenta is not fully formed, which means the embryo is not protected from deficiencies in mother’s blood. For proper creation of bodily systems it is necessary that not only correct amounts but also the right nutrients and energy are consumed.
There has been extensive research on pregnancy nutrition. One of the things that research has done is that it has broken age old myths related to pregnancy nutrition. Mothers are no longer advised that they have to eat for ‘two’. Instead the emphasis is on the quality of diet. Another myth that has been broken is that mothers need to consume excess of fat for the baby to develop. Instead, the focus is now on inclusion of specific nutrients that aid appropriate development of the baby’s body as well as the brain.
The next biggest thing that research has revealed is that what the mother eats in the prenatal stage has a significant effect on the development of the child’s brain. Certain nutrients when taken during pregnancy have a dramatic effect on brain cells and super charge in utero brain activity.
A study conducted at Duke University Medical Center revealed that choline aids to cognitive function and supports lifelong learning and memory. Adequate intake of choline during pregnancy also restricts age related memory loss and decreases brain’s susceptibility to damage from toxic elements.

Experiments were conducted by giving extra choline supplementation to pregnant rats. The gestation period in rats is only 21 days and the pups were reared to adulthood. Brain activity, particularly the hippocampus, which is responsible for memory, was examined. On comparison it was found that rats born to mothers fed on choline supplementation fired electrical signals faster and for longer durations. Also, their brain cells were significantly larger in shape and structure as compared to other pups.
Beyond this physical evidence nothing more is known about how this happens. It is also not very clear whether choline has a general effect on brain environment or promotes fundamental changes brain cells. It is however believed that choline aids in building cell membranes during the embryonic development.
Choline is a water soluble B-complex vitamin and generally refers to various naturally occurring quaternary ammonium salts. These ammonium salts are found in lipids, particularly those that make up cell membranes. In the body, the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, released at the ends of nerve fibers in the somatic and parasympathetic nervous systems is a derivative of choline. Neurotransmitter acetylcholine plays an important role in various cognitive systems in the brain. Choline is also essential for effective metabolism of fat.
Foods richest in phosphatidylcholine, a class of phospholipids, can deliver choline in adequate quantities. Egg yolks, soy, wheat germ and cooked beef, chicken, veal and turkey livers are all rich in choline. Excess consumption of liver, however, should be avoided because of presence of retinol, which is responsible for birth defects. Pregnant women can increase their choline intake simply by eating raw eggs. If you are worried about salmonella infection then it will do you good to know that it is very uncommon and only 0.003 percent of eggs are infected and that too in commercially raised hens. Eggs sourced from healthy free raised chicken have little or no risk of salmonella infection.
Research has also established that the mother also needs adequate vitamin D intake for proper development of the baby’s brain. A receptor is a cellular structure that exists only to mediate between a chemical agent that acts on nervous tissue and physiological response. The receptor related to vitamin D appears in numerous brain tissues and its activation by vitamin D supplementation has a positive effect on nerve growth in the brain. There is enough evidence to support that vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women (as also in children after birth) due to lack of exposure to sun is a leading contributor to enhanced risk of autism in children.
There is a dire need for pregnant women to increase intake of practically every nutrient, from proteins to vitamins to calcium and iron and energy. Omega 3 fatty acids are another essential nutrient that pregnant women need to consume. Hydrogenated cooking oils should be avoided at all costs because these are highly processed and not suitable for healthy development of the embryo.
All this is very well known by doctors but the recent emphasis has been on brain development, the reason why studies related to choline are extremely important. While vitamins and minerals are important for the unborn baby’s brain development, the fact is that pregnant women do not get enough of these through normal diet, despite consumption of carefully planned nutritious diet. This is also the reason why choline supplementation for boosting brain power is recommended.
Besides extra choline intake through increased consumptions of egg yolk, nuts and milk, intake of other B vitamins such as thiamine, riboflavin and B6 is also necessary for the development of the baby’s brain and enhancing his learning and cognitive abilities.
The irony of the entire story is that all this was known to our ancestors and every traditional society had specified natural diets for pregnant women. The modern society, however, is not ready to accept any anecdotal claims and requires scientific research as evidence. What is even more saddening is that we tend to get carried away by marketing hype of commercial interests. The food industry tends to shoo away wholesome foods as it has a vested interest in promoting synthetic substitutes such as egg substitutes and margarine, which actually cause harm to the unborn baby.
The reality is that the commercial food industry is among the most profitable industries. Very little amount of the main ingredient is used and the rest is all additives to add bulk. Food processing involves various chemicals at different stages. Moreover, commercial foods use strong chemicals as preservatives for increasing shelf life.
Pregnancy nutrition is 90% natural foods in their original form or cooked in natural oils. Vitamins and mineral supplementation is necessary because these essential micronutrients may be difficult to source from normal diet.
