Waiting to cross Amsterdam Avenue at 72nd Street, I noticed this woman pushing a stroller. It seems to be fairly common these days that older children ride in an upright position, standing at the back of the stroller…

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan — between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
I don’t like to intrude on people’s privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they’re still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what’s right in front of me.
I’ve also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting — literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I’ve learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture … after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it’s pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.
For the most part, I’ve deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don’t want to be photographed, and I don’t want to feel like I’m taking advantage of them. I’m still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We’ll see how it goes …
The only other thing I’ve noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, far more people who are not so interesting. They’re probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I’ve photographed … but there was just nothing memorable about them.

Lucas isn’t much for sitting in a stroller, but all the walking in SF was wearing him out. Luckily we found a cheap umbrella stroller for from Citikids of all places (a high end kids boutique in the RIchmond). It saved my back, as the day before I had carried him, completely worn out, about nine blocks from the Academy of Sciences back to where we were staying. After that, the stroller was a godsend.

！！Reminded :It’s very easy to get sucked into the constant advertising of baby powders, creams, and lotions. But the best baby lotion is plain old olive oil—cheap, natural, and un-perfumed. As for other products, keep it as natural, organic, and fragrance-free as possible.

strollers–: Why do people bring huge strollers into crowded sit down restauraunts?
Why do people always find it necessary to bring huge strollers into crowded sit down restauraunts? They block the aisles and get in the way.
Don’t they provide your children with places to sit? Either high chairs or booster seats? Can’t you bring in a carrier and slide it into a booth?

Not all restaurants have suitable places to place a car seat. I know Red Robin has these great Slings for infant car seats ad I think that’s great.

I’ve never seen this before. Maybe they walked (gas is expensive you know) and don’t trust to leave their stroller outside.

maybe they dont want there child in those nasty high chairs.. or maybe there child cant sit up and is to big for a carrier..

ive taken my son in his stroller a couple time just because the place didnt have the slings for the carseats and he needed to sit somewhere while i was eating. but most places are pretty good about having atleast the slings or high chairs that you can clip your infant car seat into.

Because they can.
I have done this before on occasion. My son was too small to sit in a high chair and his car seat is not a ‘carrier’ type of seat. It’s the kind that stays in the car.

I’ve only done this once, my husband and I were walking around a shopping center and the car was on the opposite end of the restaurant. So we took the stroller with us and the people were incredibly rude and couldn’t believe we wanted to keep it with us. I had just bought quite a few things and i didn’t want to leave them where someone could steal them. If they have a place where it would be safe i wouldn’t have a problem leaving it.

I don’t know. There aren’t many children who are too big for a carrier but too small for a high chair. I was a waitress for years and it was hard to maneuvre around them.

Right, we know that parents with children deserve to go eat at sit down restaurants……a break from the ever so boring McDonald’s. But they also have to be considerate to others and not bring in these over sized ginormous strollers to not so big restaurants. Come on people just use your common sense, don’t expect the rest of the world to accommodate you at all times. Just bring something small and simple, that can be kept out of the way.
