starting baby on solids–: starting baby on solids?
i can’t seem to get my baby full! he will be 4 months tomorrow. the last week i’ve been giving him 3 6 oz bottles 1 at 9 am 1 at about 2 and 1 at about 6 or 7. and i’m still nursing as usual. but he’s still acting like he’s hungry. i’ve been making sure he’s changed and walk with him and give him his pacifier. and it just doesn’t seem to do the trick then i give him the bottle and he’s happy. i don’t have his 4 month check up until jan 8th.
he already doubled his birth weight at his 2 month check up and was 12 pounds. he’s not this massive fat baby he’s just long and proportioned. i’m not sure what to do. should i start solids?? and if so is it best to start with rice cereal?? i keep reading mixed reviews about when and what to start. i thought i would just ask to see what people on here say.
the only reason i started the bottles was becuase even after a full day of nursing he was still crying. i gave him a bottle at 930 at night and that filled him up and he slept through the night.
i started pumping when i give him the bottles to make sure i’m regularly producing milk
oh and i nusrse at 7, then 10 then give the bottle at noonish. then nurse at around 3 (so i guess i was off on the 1-2 ish bottle) then usually give a bottle around 5 then he nurses again around 7 and he usually takes a bottle again around an hour later and is done for the night.
i’m trying to not give the bottles and just nurse so i’m hoping pumping will help. i always offer to nurse before giving the bottle.
i’m thinking about trying mother’s milk tea to increase my milk too. (anyone tried that??)

It may be a little early for rice cereal, but that is the best to start with. Nothing else until 6 months.
Answer by Mary F Sunshine
Solids aren’t going to fill him up. They’re relatively low calorie foods.
If you’re nursing, why are you adding the extra bottles? It sounds like that’s probably the issue. Your baby probably had a growth spurt. All he needed was to nurse on demand for a few days to bring your production up to what he needed. By giving him the extra from a bottle, you denied your body the chance to meet his needs. I’d toss the bottles and put him back on the breast exclusively so he can get your production back where he needs it to be.
Answer by Motherhood is cool!
Maybe he just needs more….babies at this age will tell you when they are hungry and if he is hungry feed him, whether it be by the bottle or by the breast. Having a baby get more formula during a growth spurt is NOT the end of the world, would you rather he be happy and fed and content, or do you really want to wait for your milk to be at the level he needs.
Please, don’t start solids until your dr. says he is ready, just give more formula.

We started my son on cereal at 4 months. I did not mix it in his bottle. I feed it to him on a spoon. It didn’t replace a bottle, just help fill him up a little more. Then at about 5 months, I started mixing in a little bit of baby food (apples)….by 6 months, introduced a new food every 4 to 5 days.
I can also tell you that at 4 months old, my son got a bottle every 3 hours….so how often do you nurse?
Good Luck.

I believe..mother knows best..If you think you should start him on solids..do it! My guy has been on solids since 4 months. He also got his two bottom teeth the day he turned 4 months old, he to would be hungry all the time. Start him on one thing at a time..just in case he has a reaction to a certain food..wait 3 days and start him on something else. I skipped cereal because he wanted nothing to do with it and it has no nutritional value in it. You do whats best with your son.
Also, the first few times you give him solids with a spoon, he will probably get more on his chin and clothing than in his mouth..that’s OK..just give it a few try’s and he will get the hang of it.
They told my sister to start her 3 week old on alittle cereal in her bottle to help her keep her food down better, because she spit up alot!
Answer by Pippin
It’s still really very early for solids. If he’s not satisfied with his milk, offer more milk. (He can’t have ‘too much’ breastmilk, and if your supplementing with formula, he can safely have up to 40 ounces or so — and he’s nowhere near that amount.) If he isn’t satisfied with his milk, a teaspoon of rice isnt’ going to make a different. The calories he’d get from it are negligible.
If you do opt to start now, you don’t have to give rice cereal — there’s nothing magic about rice. It’s no easier to digest or less allergenic than any other simple food. (Rice cereal became the traditional first food when babies were started on solids VERY early, and when most were fed home-made formula. They needed the iron in the cereal to prevent anemia, and the cereal could be diluted to nearly-water and force-fed to newborns who couldn’t eat food with texture. Your baby is geting ample iron in his formula and breastmilk, and if he IS ready for solids (able to sit up and eat from a spoon), he can eat food with taste and texture.)

give him rice cereal, oat cereal etc. i started my daughter before 4 months because she was hungry. you don’t need to wait to 6 months, a hungry baby needs to be fed.
Answer by Sourkandy19
My son was constantly hungry at 2 1/2 months, and was a supported sitter at this age as well, and that’s when I introduced solids to my son, fruit and cereal, by the time he was 4 months old he was eating fruit and cereal in the morning and a veggie and fruit in the evening, My pediatrican recommend solid foods twice a day starting at 4 months, I started a little earlier, and my dr was aware. My pediatrican treats children as individuals rather than treating every child the same, they indiviudalize their needs, and for the most part follow AAP guidlines, but they also do bend the guidelines when they see fit to accomadate each child.

Q&A–: Starting baby on solids?
After doing some research, I read that it may be better to start a child on regular table food instead of puree’s. I am looking for anyone’s experience with this. My son is 5 1/2 months and I plan on starting solids once he is 6 months old.
I’m not going to feed him everything all at once. I’m saying instead of pureeing a banana, you would cut it up in little chunks that he can grab and feed himself. Obviously if it doesn’t work out at first, I would feed him myself. I would never jeapardize the safety of my child. I only want what’s best for him. As for infant cereal, I am skipping this because I have read it is not necessary. I will definately discuss everything with the doctor, but I wanted to learn of other people experiences.

This is called baby-led weaning and you will want to read up.

Technically, you can start offering baby food at 6 months, but baby may refuse or be unable to feed themselves. Just follow your baby’s cues. If he’s not interested, try again in a couple weeks. I knew my baby was ready when he reached out and helped himself to the sweet potatoes on my plate at 7.5 months of age. Baby gets everything that we eat (well, except for the sweet stuff!) He will eat fruits, veggies, rice, beans, lentils, soft meats, and so on. I cut things up small so that he can pick them up with his pincer grasp, or leave them larger so that they have a handle, like a piece of broccoli.
Babies who are allowed to feed themselves rarely choke. Obviously, you want to avoid large pieces like grapes, that can be hazards, but otherwise, babies do great.
ETA: I love how people are answering based on purees. Purees, like you’ve read, are *unnatural*! They *create* picky, texture averse babies who choke on pieces of food. It’s absolutely unnecessary to feed a baby purees and creates feeding issues in the future.
And Baby rice cereal? That processed crap in a cardboard box? There’s no way I would let my child eat that garbage. Baby can have RICE, not rice flakes processed to remove anything of nutritional value.
“Sound scientific research and government advice now agree that there is no longer any window of a baby’s development in which they need something more than milk and less than solids [i.e. purees]”
Yes, bananas are great to start with! Avocados, sweet potatoes, steamed veggies, they’re all good to start with. I’m excited you’re going to try this, we’ve had the best experience with it.

baby may be able to eat anything that is mashed well just be careful giving anything that isnt mashed could cause the baby to choke
Answer by ALFimzadi
This is all just personal choice. If you are afraid of the child choking, there are the mesh feeders you can buy at Walmart (about .25) that you can put solids into and the baby can suck/mash it into his/her mouth so that they start eating real foods, but without getting skins or seeds or anything. I use the baby foods, simply because my son doesn’t have teeth yet, and he’s 8 months, so it is hard to get him to mash even the smallest piece of anything! But as soon as he has a few teeth, we’ll switch to more solid foods.
Answer by donnyandmelissa@att.net
I would just puree fresh solid food the babies belly isnt ready to eat solid solid food. it is just as healthy to puree it i dont think it matters what form its in.
Answer by pebblesphd
my daughter was feed mashed potatoes before she was 5 months just be careful not to indroduce but one food at a time so you may know what he is allergic to
Answer by trouble_sum81
you can plan all you want does not mean he or she will accept. 6 month on solids seems a lil far fetched to me especially if you have not started purees yet. Baby has to get use to flavors and textures and you have to start slow one flav at a time so you can tell if there are any food allergies. Don’t go given the baby a bunch of crap at once cuz if they were allergic you would never be able to tell what exactly was causing it. There is no way the baby will allow solids in his mouth until he is use to eating for a few months. My son is 8 months, he is my second. He is still not completely on solids. He is on gerber # 3 which is a lil chunkier then puree but how can he handle solids without a bunch of teeth first. Save yourself and the poor kid and give him infant cereal, infant cereal with juice mixed and purees to start. He won’t even like them at first. They say it can take up to 15 times for a baby to accept a new flavor. Good Luck on what ever you do.

I don’t know where you got yourinformation about this.
Doctor….listen to your doctor.
A baby cannot digest solids or even junior foods yet.
Cereal first(baby cereal)
You can make your baby sick by doing the wrong things,
Answer by daysie78
My daughter started pureed food at 4 months, but only moved up to solids when she was 10 months. It really depends on how he does with the puree and how well he can chew.

on’t let your own anxiety affect your baby’s growing need for independence

Somewhere between her fourth and sixth month, your baby will be ready to drop the liquid-only diet. Here, the basics of starting her on solids: Baby.Healthguru.com
i would try him on the fruits and vegetables baby food the first or second time then i would introduce him to easy to swallow foods such as mashed potatoes.
Babies have been fed purees for centuries! Seems to me there is just a new movement around today where everyone wants to be more cautious with some things and just “different” with other things even if they may be dangerous. No one wants to do the traditional. First they say not to feed any solids before 6 months and then they say to start with table food??? I don’t get it!
