I need advise on starting home-made solid food for my son. I am not a big fan of canned food so if want to skip that what are my options and how many times a day should a baby eat solid food? Also, is it essential to give him completely bland food. I know I should not give him any added sugar in his food but how about a little salt?

No dont add salt! Babies can’t handle any extra salt in their diet until a year. Their little kidneys arent ready to process it. Things that will taste balnd to you will taste great to a baby who has just had formula or breastmilk. Simply cook the fruits or vegetables by steaming them until soft, puree them in a blender, adding water or breastmilk, and put them through a fine strainer to get any lumps out. Put it in ice cube trays and freeze it, taking out individual portions when ready.

In my opinion, any spices or minerals are not going to harm your baby. My son was eating Jambalaya at the age of 6 months. My husband is Mexican, so we eat spicy food periodically when we go to his Mother’s house and my son loves it. Also, there is no need to puree everything. Try cutting up bananas into little pieces and feed them to your baby. It will help him learn to mush things with his gums and get him off smooth pureed foods that much faster. Also try putting cheerios and other finger foods in front of your son as soon as possible. He may not be able to feed himself right away, but he’ll learn pretty fast. My son could feed himself with his fingers at 7 months.
As far as how often you should feed solid foods is completely up to you. My son had solids once or twice a day until he was maybe 9 months (we started solids at 6 months). At 9 months he was pretty much eating 3 meals a day with us. He eats what we eat and that’s it. I do not make any special meals for him.

I wouldn’t add salt. I don’t even add salt to the food for the rest of the family and nobody notices!

i make all my babies food, he is 5 months so im only doing finely pureed things…he eats brown rice, peaches, pears, peas, carrots, apples, and oatmeal..i was told not to use spices or salt or sugar for awhile,i give him oatmeal in the morning with a fruit and rice in afternoon with a veggie, eventually you need to work up to 3 meals a day just like an adult, also with the additional breast or bottle feedings as well…so far its been easy i usually peel, and cut everything from fresh then purree it with the food processor(it has to be smooth with no chunks and liquidy at first), i then freeze it in ice cube trays and then take them out and put in a plastic bag and label and date it… a good website to check out is wholesomebabyfood.com…..good luck

Q&A–: What age was your baby when you started to feed it solid food?
I have a 3 month old baby, as I look towards the future at what age did you start to feed your baby solid food? I am a breastfeeding mom and I plan on continuing to do so for the first year. When should I introduce my son to solid food. I was looking at baby food labels and some were for 4 month olds. I was surprised as I had not intended to use solid food yet. When will it benefit my child nutritionally to eat baby food?

My daughter was 5 months when she first tried it. After a couple of times. Seeing that she didn’t really like it. We just stopped, reintroduced it when she was 7 months and she did SOOO much better. Even liked it.
Just remember baby food is only for practice. Teaching them how to chew and swallow. Does not offer any extra nutritional benefit at this stage.

4-6 months is the rule of thumb. Additionally, my baby’s ped said to wait till she could sit up (supported) as this helps avoid choking. She also said to wait till my baby seemed interested in solid food. In my baby’s case, this was around 5 months–but your mileage may vary, your kid may be sitting up next month and eyeing your spaghetti hopefully. My baby was interested in watching us eat dinner, seemed to want to put things in her mouth, and seemed to have lost a lot of that tongue-thrust reflex all at around 5 months. The first time we gave her baby oatmeal, she loved it.
I would recommend wholesomebabyfood.com because it gives you a lot of recipes for making your own baby food, which a) helps you control ingredients if there are any allergies in your family and b) is so, so much cheaper. The site has a lot of information about what foods can be introduced first, what foods present the most trouble for allergies, what foods are best left for older babies who have learned how to mash things between their gums/teeth, etc.
Answer by jlb
My daughter was just shy of 6 months old when we started here on solids. The current recommendation from the AAP is to wait until 6 months, although a few babies are ready a little earlier and a few a littler later.
Be skeptical of recommendations from baby food companies. There goal is to sell their product. Just b/c you ‘can’ feed a 4 month old solids doesn’t mean you should.
Answer by Bro John
Some pediatricians recommends that baby stay on baby food only for 2 years. Don’t do that!
Breastfeed as long as possible, hopefully 2 years. But by 6 months, baby should already be taking some soft table food-mashed potatoes, grits, smashed up beans and so on. Let them have if if they want it-but continue breast milk if available and cereals.
You should dodge the sweets as long as possible, including sweet drinks.

Have you ever heard of baby led weaning? It’s when you put the baby in charge of what they eat, and you don’t spoon feed them mush out of jars. You should put some research in- here’s a start

There is no nutritional benefit to your baby eating any food other than breast milk before 6 months of age.
