Question: Why does breastfeeding with inverted nipples hurt at the start?

I am a breastfeeding mom. My left breast has inverted nipple. Why is it so painful during the start of breastfeeding when my daughter tries to draw the nipple out? Is there any way I can correct this? Thanks!

You can pump a little before so that it’s already pulled out, or you can try nipple shields.

you can try latch-assist from lansinoh. it’s basically a bulb with a horn at the end and it draws your nipple out quickly. it costs like 10 bucks, but it’s better than having an angry baby or sore nipples and it’s faster than pumping. another thing you can try is putting something cold on it right before, this will draw you out and numb the pain. i have 2 flat nipples which i though all my life were normal, but sadly discovered this is not ideal for breastfeeding. it took me & my son 5 weeks to get it all figured out! but now, my nipples stick out more than they did before, so just keep at it and you two will get the hang of it. as long as your nipple isn’t getting cracked or anything, the pain should go away with time if the latch is correct.

Breastfeeding in general is painful in the begining, over time it will get better.
Have you tried a nipple shield for that breast?
