Q&A: Why aren’t there more ‘little man’ clothes for infant boys?
Hi,my name is Anne,I did the following:
Question: Why aren’t there more ‘little man’ clothes for infant boys?
We are expecting our first child, a boy, any moment now (1 week 2 days overdue here!). I keep fussing with his room, looking at all of his clothes, walking through the mall looking at more clothes, you know just playing the waiting game. I have noticed that all of the little girl clothes are gorgeous, and basically just little versions of grown up clothes. Then, you go to the, depressingly small, boys section and all they have are stupid outfits with fish, monsters, cars, or sports stuff all over them! Also, why don’t they make jeans for infant boys? Seriously, I have found 3 pairs of jeans for boys under 12 months. I only bought one of them because the other ones were a pair!! I can buy ME a pair of jeans for , I couldn’t believe it!?!?! Hubby and I aren’t into sports, or having every shirt our son wears declaring something stupid that means nothing. Why is it so hard to dress your little boy like daddy? What is wrong with a pair of jeans, a solid color onesie, and a nice little mock turtleneck collar zip-up? I would LOVE to find a 12 pack of solid color onesies, but alas I have yet to do so…
Does anyone know where you can find a good selection of ‘little man’ clothes at reasonable prices? (I live in the Metro-Detroit area if that helps, but I am into on-line shopping as well) I really am not into the idea of spending on a pair of jeans he will only be able to wear for a couple of months…
Thanks!
Tracey – I totally didn’t take the seasons into account! Thank you for that, *lol*.
Also, when I say ‘jeans’ I mean a denim pant, or at least one the LOOKS denim. And I am FULLY aware that comfort will be the #1 prioity. While we are at home I really won’t care if he is just in a diaper, however I do want some nice things for when we go out, I do not think that is unreasonable!
Oh, and why have a lot of you assumed I am talking about only newborn clothes? I am thinking a few months out here…we have enough newborn stuff, and actually almost NO pants for him as a newborn, who would want elastic on their trying-to-heal-bellybutton?

Have you ever tried to do diapers with jeans? Especially full, dirty diapers? Really, the reason it’s not around is because for ease baby clothes are best – for boys and girls, and you do a lot of diapers! I have two boys, they were dressed like babies not “boys” or “little men”, and for damn good reason – they took a lot of dumps so far in their life and it’s just not worth the trouble.

Why on earth do you want to buy a pair of jeans for your new born baby boy? He’s not a toddler yet,you should be dressing him in cute baby clothes for comfort not fashion.Tiny babies in jeans look stupid!

My bub has a ton of little man clothes, I bought them all online. Look at Old Navy/Baby Gap (oldnavy.com), Babies R us (babiesrus.com), amazon.com, target.com, walmart.com, The Children’s Place.

Lol, I complain about this too…. A lot of the boys clothing is UGLY unless you want to spend on a top. I have had good luck with Target, though. Most of their stuff is cute and that’s where I get his jeans from. I’ve also found cute stuff at Old Navy as well. Otherwise I try to stick with sale items at places like The Children’s Place and Gymboree. While their stuff is cute as well it can sometimes get pricey. Carter’s is another good place and they often have sales.
It stinks, though, for every rack of boy clothing there is 5-6 for girls. Same goes for shoes… ugh!
ETA: I do have to agree with the others. When our son was a newborn it was easiest to do a onesie with knit shorts if we went out or just a sleeper.

This is funny, because I have a little girl and often shop the boys’ sections because the girls’ stuff is twee and fussy, and the jeans are not regular jeans but weird things covered in pink embroidery and…
Most of the big chains — Baby Gap, Old Navy, Children’s Place etc — do knock out the sort of plain ‘grown-up’ stuff you’re looking for; you just have to keep an eye out for it. I think the thinking is that if they keep selling plain sweaters people will stop shopping there and instead a new car sweater has to come out every three weeks — but they do throw plain stuff into the mix; stock up when you spot it.
Previous answers are correct though in that you won’t want to stuff a newborn into jeans and a sweater on a regular basis..

you will find that when baby is actually here dress ups arent as fun as they seem, you will be more interested in keeping them comfy and clean than being sure they are trendy at all times.

Actual jeans for baby boys that have no elastic in the waist ( I am assuming that’s what you mean) aren’t very practical for a small infant. They work better for kids after they can walk.
I do know what you mean though about baby clothes having trucks and monsters and the like all over them. Frankly, I am having my sixth girl and it’s harder than hell for me to find stuff that doesn’t have Disney princess something-or-other plastered all over it!
However, most baby clothes are designed to be easy to remove and put on, wash and wear. Further, you will find that your baby grows out of a lot of this stuff quickly so that you don’t have to look at it too long,
Since summer is coming on, he will mostly be only in onesies and diapers anyway and with as much as babies spit up and poop, you’ll be changing them often! After awhile, you won’t care so much if it has a truck or frog on it, so long as it’s clean, LOL.
By the time fall and winter gets here, there will probably be a bit better selection as far as turtlenecks and button up, but with summer coming, you aren’t likely to see those styles for awhile.

Try making some infant pants. It’s cheaper and you will get what you want. Jeans are a thick fabric that don’t lend themselves to infant clothing (toddler yes), but you can buy thinner denim at Hancock’s and Joanns. I made a pair first for a teddy bear and then a bunch for relative’s infant and toddler kids. I don’t think any pair was more than for materials.
I made 20 solid color onesies for my cousin’s twins. Took an hour to complete each one (from laying out pattern to getting the last snap in). If you don’t like what you are finding, learn to sew. Children’s clothing is SO easy to make and inexpensive since you use less than a yard for nearly all outfits.

i totally know what you mean!
my son is 2 1/2 and i remember when i was pregnant with him getting so frustrated with the lack of selection in the boy section. you look across the way and there are racks and racks of adorable little girl clothes! so annoying. it doesnt get better as they get older either.
i do manage to find cute stuff at jc penny’s, target, carter’s, babies r us, old navy, and sometimes at walmart.
ive never had a problem with finding jeans. walmart has the cheapest ones. usually – a pair. the most ive spent is on a pair of jeans, that was at a carter’s store.
check out the stores ive mentioned.
im glad you want to actually dress your child and not just let him run around in a onesie or just a diaper all day.

I’ve never had a problem with jeans on my son- Ethel must have just gotten duds!
Personally I like to put my son in overalls- have you tried finding them in anything other than newborn size?! Impossible! I like to buy my son’s clothes from Pumpkin patch as they have more ‘adult’ designs and they go nicely over a cloth diaper. They do a LOT of plain shirts and classic cut trousers for the LO and while they are a bit pricey the stuff LASTS and I have yet to have a stain stick to clothes purchased from there.
Here’s there website for Australia- they have stores in America but I don’t know the site for America and my browser won’t let me google it!
What do you think? Answer below!
I know exactly what you mean – we have 19 month old boy / girl twins and there just seems to be so many more options for my daughter.
Do you have any children’s consignment shops near you? We have 2 in our area – Kid to Kid and Childrens Orchard. They are great because you can buy slightly used clothes, usually name brands and so inexpensive compared to new!
If you like online shopping, I included some links to places we use. I also recommend that you do a google search for a coupon code – you can almost always find some sort of % off on online stuff.
For my little man, we like Childrens Place:

Best wishes & Congrats!
Gap has “little man” clothes. They have polos, button-ups, khakis, jeans, just really cute stuff! I agree though I don’t like dressing my baby boy in cartoons and trucks. Baby stores seem to carry stuff like that. But if you go to stores like gap/old navy etc. where they also sell adult clothes, the baby clothes tend to look more mature
