Q&A: when should you put a baby in a toddler bed?

My husband and I are going to start to try for another baby when my daughter turns one… at that age should we try to put her in a toddler bed? The reason I ask the question is because when the baby comes, I don’t want her to think she is getting pushed aside and the new baby is taking her crib.. so i want her in her own bed before the baby comes, that way she is already used to it… so about when should I transition her to her own bed?

I would say put a bed rail on the crib when shes around 15 or 16 months so she gets used to being able to climb in and out of bed, then a couple months before your due I would say get the toddler bed and make the transistion

With my first daughter, I had her in a twin size bed at 15 months and my second daughter at 18 months. It is your choice. With a toddler bed you can go as early as you want. They will not get hurt if they roll out:) Good luck!

Most recommend the switch when they are able to climb out of the crib. My son was doing this at 19 months and that’s when we switched him…no problems.

Make the transition smooth and never tell your daighter that the reson is becasue of the new baby…make it all about her and it should go just fine!!!

Also…taking the crib down when she is fully transitioned would help…out of sight….out of mind. Put it back when the new baby arrives.

make sure you transition her about 3 months before you are due, that will give her plenty of time of being a “big girl” What we did so our oldest wasnt afraid was put the toddler bed together in her room and let her play on it, every time she went and laid down, we would say, “wow, what a big girl! Are you trying to copy mommy and daddy?” First we did naps only in the toddler bed for about a week, then we moved her completely. We had no problems, it isnt as bad as I thought it would be. Cribs are expensive and I agree with what you are doing.

About 18 months old seems to be the average for switching to a toddler bed but my boys could climb out of a crib at 12 months.

my children went into toddler bed when they were able to climb out of crib.. when that happened i went to store bought toddler bed and they were in it.. mine had a rail on so they wouldn’t fall out. ever since no problems. they were around 14-18 months old.

my daughter went into a big girl bed at 21months without a problem. We use a guard rail so she doesn’t fall out. My son now uses her cot and she doesn’t mind that either! She’s now 28 months and i don’t think she even remembers it was ever hers :-) . She won’t feel pushed aside, as long as you act all excited about her new bed and tell her how great it is and how lucky she is etc etc…..

My son was born when my daughter was almost 2 years old. We put my daughter in a toddler bed when she started climbing out of her crib, which was about 15 months. Now that my son is 17 months he has been sleeping in a toddler bed for about 2 months. I found that with my daughter the easiest thing to do was to stress that this was a big step for her and would make her “a big girl”. I had no problem with either one of them. When I finally put my son in the toddler bed we got my daughter a twin size, she absolutely loves her “big bed” as she calls it and I have never noticed that she felt like she was pushed out of her bed in either situation.

I transitioned my son to a bed after his first birthday. I decided to move him to a big boy twin bed instead of toddler bed and save the money. First I did the mattress on the floor, then added a box spring, and finally put it on the bed frame. I waited until he stopped rolling out of bed at each stage of the game. It took a little time, but he loved having big boy sheets and I loved saving the money by not buying the toddler bed knowing he’d grow out of it fairly quickly.
