Q&A–: Toddler meal/snack ideas?
Just trying to think of some new meal/snack ideas for my two y/o. No food allergies.
Thank you. My son eats everything that we eat and he has a pretty good variety. Just wanted to get some new ideas from other moms. Always looking for new meal ideas. Thanks.

Tuna crackers, peanut butter crackers, You can buy some peaches or almost any kind of fruit already chopped and put into separate containers. I drain the liquid out of it and put the fruit on top of some crackers. You can also get and ice tray fill it with gello that you’ve made add small pieces of different kind of fruit in each one then put it in the ice box. Once there done you’ll have a bunch of smack square pieces of gello for them. You can also grilled tuna. You make it exactly like grilled cheese but instead of the cheese you put tuna in it. You could make mac and cheese just add 1 can corn, 1 can, tuna 1 can peas, and mix it all together while its still hot off the stove. Serve it warm to your kid. It might sound weird but its really good.

Breakfast is usually cereal and fruit, served with toast and cheese and peanut butter. (We do pancakes/wafflfes on Saturdays and a big breakfast on Sundays).

Lunch is usually soup, sandwhiches or leftovers from the night before. Today, we had homemade chicken pot pie.

Supper- our toddlers eat what we eat, just usually in smaller portions. If it is something spicy, I will take theirs out before adding the spice.

I put out fruit and veggie trays throughout the day, for them to graze as they please. Morning snack is usually yogurt, afternoon snack is usually a cookie, popcycle or something of the sort.

She loves chicken and steak “nuggets” (just stir fried and cut up), a favorite of hers is when I make macaroni and cheese and mix sweet peas in it… she eats almost anything.

It’s so easy to get stuck in a rut of fixing the same things for my kids. I’m always looking for new ideas too.

Soups and stews are good this time of year- chili, beef stew, and cream of broccoli are all good and easy to make. I drain almost all of the broth out of my 2 year old’s bowl, and just let him eat the other ingredients.

You can set out healthy toppings and let your 2 year old fix his own little pizza, my kids love to do this.

Roast a chicken, you can serve the chicken with potatoes and veggies one night and then use the left over chicken for chicken soft tacos, chicken enchiladas, or chicken salad.

For a quick lunch, you can cook a little bit of pasta and then toss it with a little butter or olive oil and grate parmesan over it, and serve with broccoli or peas.

Snacks: graham crackers with strawberry slices and a little dab of cream cheese on them; celery with peanut butter; homemade trail mix with whatever raisins and nuts you have in your cupboards (that may be a little old for him); make your own fruit salad with whatever you have on hand; hard boiled eggs; pretzels with string cheese; applesauce, yogurt, etc.

try making faces with there food, or shapes… I used to cut my daughters bread into a circle, and then use celery sticks and carrot sticks around it to make it look like a sun… my husband would make an open face sandwich with p butter, and draw a heart, or some design in it.. just make it fun!

Answer by Susan C
i know this kinda sounds silly…but have you tried picnics? like taking them outside…making up some kind of food…and eating it on a blanket….take some music out…it works for my 17 month old…lol

Answer by jamie k
I think the key to this is making them see how fun it is to eat! lol
My mom used to make regular speghetti, then take a “hotdog” and make it into an octupus by cutting the bottoms in different sizes.
She then took a fork and poked holes in the top for eyes.
She layed that on top of the speghetti and i loved it!!

Another thing you can do for a more healthy desert is to take some blue geletin, put some sliced apples at the bottom, for “gravel” then pour some blue geletin and hlaf way through the hardening process, add a sweedish fish! or another apple cut like a fish! Put as many fish as you want to return it back to the fridge! Once it’s done.. Enjoy! Your fishbowl geletin treats!! =)
ps- you can substitute ANY flavor of geletin! Clear works great too!!
..
hope this helps!

Now they’re growing up and learing how to do more things, it’s natural that eating isn’t the highlight of their day. Mine would be so involved in playing they didn’t want to stop just to eat.

But, they’re old enough to “help” you cook now. Most little kids love to help Mommy cook, are much more willing to eat food they’ve helped “cook”.

Give them easy safe tasks, like spooning applesauce or cottage cheese. etc. into the serving bowl, and “tossing” the salad, or arranging raw veggies on a plate, or put peanut butter in celery sticks and top them with raisins to make “ants on a log”. If you let them help, I’ll bet you see their interest in mealtime increasing!

Answer by misty_dawn1100
Let them help you. Kids will eat almost anything if they help make it. They can stir, or tear lettuce for a salad, or use cookie cutters to cut things into fun shapes. Let them do it, even if they mess up tell them they’re doing a good job.

Try different foods. My 2 1/2 year old daughter love ethnic foods, Chinese. mexican and italian.
I also make her up nibble plate as snack to supplement her meals. I take caparmentl plastic plate and put something different in each capartment. Like apple slices, peanut butter, crackers, sliced almonds, string cheese.
