My brother had the same problem. This is a control thing, she feels like her eating is the only thing she can control. This may sound bad, but try bribing her. Every time she eats, put a penny in a jar. Every time she eats something that isn’t food, take a penny out. Make sure to do this in front of her so she knows what’s going on. When she’s made enough money, take her to the dollar store and let her pick something out. It worked with my brother, hopefully it will work for your daughter :)

Also, try taking her grocery shopping with you. Let her pick out a few things she wants, and she’ll eat them. She might just be picky; get her foods every kid likes: chicken nuggets, sugary cereals, chocolate milk, frozen pizza, etc. Hope this helps!

I know what you are going through. I have a four year old that puts everything in his mouth. He is so… picky when it comes to normal food I can’t take it any longer. I try and ween him off of what is fav’s are but I don’t get any help with his father. Everyone says also it is just a phase but I don’t know. I hope you find an answer!!! Good luck and Wish for the “Phase” to go away soon!!!

Yes I have heard of that. Have you tried taking her out to McDonald. Sometimes kids will eat junk foods and not eat homemade food. Her craving for non-food items, is call PICA what your daughter has. You might have to spend an hour feeding her promising her diamonds in the skies. That is what my mom went through with me and my little brother. You can tell her she can play after she eats the faster she finishes eat the faster she can go play. You need to be patient. She will probably eat a small meal in 2hours.

It’s called PICA and it can be someone who craves or likes to eat none food items… can be caused by lack of iron… try to get that baby all the vitamins and nutrients you can because if I’m right this is caused because she is lacking in something usually iron…

Answer by Rockford
Toddlers taking Iron is the leading cause of poisoning in children. It is true that lack of iron can cause Pica, but get blood tests. If she is losing weight and having diahrea, also consider celiac disease.

Question–: When did your toddler start eating by themselves?
I have a 2 year old that doesn’t seem to use a fork or spoon very well. He can “stab” something with a fork but that’s about it. Also what about drinking from a regular cup? I don’t even know if I want to attempt that!

My daughter is almost three and has been using a spoon and fork since about 18 months. She still has days when she’d rather use her hands but we just remind her that she needs to use the utensils. She’s been drinking out of a regular cup since a little over two years of age. We use a sippy cup still if we go to other people’s homes so she doesn’t accidentally spill on their floors.

I have a boy who will be two in 3 days. He started using a spoon at about 15 months. I helped him at first to scoop the food (we started with apple sauce – no stains and easy to scoop) and then helped guide it to his mouth. Soon I was just helping to scoop and he could find his mouth most of the time. Now he is doing it all himself (not perfectly) and is slowly learning to use a fork.

As for the cup, he loves to taste what I am drinking but I definately wont let him do it on his own yet since he likes to blow bubbles and play with it rather than focus on drinking it. So he will have a sippy cup for a while.

Kids learn these things at all different times in their toddler years – just like potty training, talking and everything else! If he is atleast interested in trying new things you are lucky!

My daughter was using a fork at her first birthday party, but I dont remember when it started. She was also using her hands some then too. She was probably 13 or 14 months old when she started using her fork and spoon all the time, and she is 20 months old right now.

He just began to eat apples alone (and the way they grow). It is so nice to see what he learns every day, but it is especially lovely to see how he eats an apple. Just think of how big this thing must be to him and try to imagine eating something of this relative size yourself.
