teaching kids to write–: How to teach kids to write their own skits?
This summer I am teaching a Theater Program at a summer camp where I am supposed to have the campers (ages 10 – 14) write their own skits (in groups of about 5 – 10 kids) and perform them for the rest of the camp. How would I go about teaching this class? What kinds of techniques could I use to help the children come up with ideas for their skits?

try the charatcher setting situation cards. we use those all the time in drama it helps alot. becasuse for teens and pre-teens to have to fully come up the skit on there own put them under so much pressure. so try giving them the cards and let them build around them you will be very suprised with the result.

My own kids have been writing their own skits since they were in preschool (they’re just kind of weird this way…it’s nothing I taught them). They usually come up with ideas on their own. For instance, they were playing with face paint and decided to write a play about some clowns. They came up with a 30-minute play, complete with costumes, props, music, and everything in the course of one evening. So…… maybe just lay out a few costumes and instruct them to brainstorm from there.

One “assignment” I did give them, however, was to create a skit telling the true story of Christmas. (This was to encourage them to share their “gift” at Christmastime). They came up with a “news broadcast”, where their news caster was visiting various Christmas celebrations and reporting different bits of the Christmas story as it was being shared at each location.

Don’t underestimate the creative mind of a child. You can throw out very general topics/ideas and then sit back and let them run with it. What they come up with when you give them this freedom may astound you.

teaching kids to write–: Are they doing away with teaching kids cursive writing?
I heard they are doing away with cursive handwriting for kids. Is this true? When I was young they taught us cursive and even went as far to make us write papers solely in cursive. If they do away with this, what is to become of signatures?

The following is the answer: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

I’ve taught in several different elementary schools in the past five years, and all of them were still teaching the children to do cursive writing. They worked on it quite a bit in third grade.

Some schools are teaching children a different kind of cursive writing that goes straight up and down instead of being slanted. It is supposed to be much easier for children to do, but I have to admit that in my opinion it looks awful! The Handwriting Without Tears method used by some schools teaches this kind of cursive.

So, though I am sure that schools in some areas may not be having students work on cursive, many others are still doing it. I think it is a good thing because I’ve seen many students (including ones who might not care about most school subjects) take a lot of pride in their penmanship.

Since I teach middle school most of the time, I have moved away from ‘teaching handwriting’ however, I have noticed over the past few years because everyone uses computers, students have moved away from the joy of writing in ones on handwriting.

My eighth graders are STILL printing their work and hating every moment of it – especially when they are asked to TAKE NOTES.

This year I will be making a point of ‘teaching’ the correct way to print and write in cursive. So many students have poor writing skills and often times, the teacher cannot read what they have written. I always let them know that if I can’t read it – I can’t grade it. You would not believe how many papers I have had to return just because I could not read the very, very small print, or the too large print from a student’s work.

We used to begin teaching cursive in second grade, but the new Handwriting Without Tears begins cursive instruction in third grade. The kindergarten and second grade teachers seem to like it (easier for kindergarten, less work for second grade teachers). No one else likes it. The handwriting is straight up and down….they might as well be printing.

How we teach western kids to write Chinese characters
teaching kids to write

Like many families that move to China, we have tried different ways to help your lad to learn Chinese. Through trial and error, we have found a few ways that make a difference. This is the approach that works that best. After 9 months here, this learning ‘game’ we use has proved a huge success. He got 94% in his exam last month.
Remember, the tests are all in Chinese. 9 months ago he had almost no Chinese. Here’s how we (well, my wife) does it.
We write the words on the floor with a felt tipped pen using pinyin. This is the phonetic spelling of the word. Learning pinyin is fairly straightforward, though you need to understand the tones: 1,2,3,4 all of which have different means.
So,
Ma with tone #1 means Mother
Ma with tone #2 means Pig
and so on…
The trick is to pronounce the words with the right tone, otherwise…
To learn the Chinese characters, we write the pinyin on the floor (it works like a giant white board) and then ask junior to write in the characters.
This ‘game’ works with kids. They like the idea of filling in the gaps and working towards completion. I guess it’s like completing a jigsaw.
