Question–: Super Baby Food – milk bad but yogurt good?
I just read “Super Baby Food” by Ruth Yaron and I’m confused about the whole milk and yogurt thing. I know you are NOT supposed to give your baby cow’s milk before 1 year of age. But why is it ok to give your baby yogurt made of cow’s milk as a first food??? It’s even suggested that yogurt is healthy and a great first food for your baby. Can someone please explain this discrepancy for me?

Thanks so much.

Breast milk and formula has more nutrients.

The whole milk in yogurt is treated with probiotics and bacterias which alter the way in which it is digested. These eliminate the possibility of yogurt causing an alergic reaction the way milk could.

I think it has something to do with the proteins being different in yoghurt than cows milk/other dairy prodcuts.

I still personally hold off till about 8-9 months for youghurt…some people will wait till at least 12 months.

super baby food–: Super Baby Food book – nuts?
Hi… (I WILL ask our dr this… just getting other opinions for now) we make all of our baby’s food according to the book “Super Baby Food”… does anyone else go by this? Anyway – we are approaching the 7/8 month mark when it says to introduce seeds/nuts to the baby – ground up and sprinkled in food (not peanuts!) Is this okay… is it just peanuts you have to be careful with before a year, or is it all nuts? It’s very specific about not peanuts, but I want to make sure other seeds/nuts (again, ground up into powder ans sprinkled) are okay. Thanks! :-)

Actually the american academy of pediatrics now states that there is no benefit to waiting past 6 months to give peanuts and that children who are not given peanuts early in life are more likely to develop an allergy to peanut protein later in life. Of course these damn scientists and doctors flip flop back and forth all the time so you never know who to trust.

However, at this time with all of the peanut recalls going on, I would not introduce ANY nuts to your child unless you are absolutely 100% sure that they were not processed on equipment that processes peanuts and that there is no risk of salmonella. They are recalling SO many nut products right now. But once this all blows over or if you are sure you can find tree nuts that aren’t contaminated then they should be fine as long as there aren’t allergies in your family. They are not related to peanuts. Peanuts aren’t even nuts, they’re legumes. Unrelated to tree nuts.

i would wait until 1 year, but that’s just me. sesame seeds sometimes cause a reaction so just look out for that – but the only nut to stay away from is a peanut. my dr has us wait until age 3. its a little longer than the usual age of 2, but i have no problem with it. i used to make almond butter and jelly sandwiches and the kids love them.
