Q&A–: Christians: Do you recommend that young children read the Bible?
Or do you only teach children certain stories/doctrines once they get to a certain age?

It seems to me that ALOT of the Bible consists of very “mature”, “adult” content. Alotta sex, rape, murder, and ridiculous violence can be found in that book.

Do you hold off certain parts with young children?

I get the feeling that if a 5 year old kid were to read some of the stuff in the KJV Bible, his head would straight up explode

If you wait until the brain is fully developed then they won’t believe it.
Edit: Think if someone told some magical obese man goes around delivering presents to good people at your age now. Same thing.

Answer by HUMANIST
The younger you start the brainwashing the better it works.

It’s never too soon to teach a child from the Bible. I would never withhold the truth from a child

Do you recommend young children watch television?

(personally I would prefer my children to learn about sex, rape, murder and voilence within some kind of moral context than the way most do (because their parents are too lazy or embarrassed to speak of such things) from each other or the internet)

There are many wonderful illustrated bible story books for the under fives.

Answer by KL
We read the Bible out loud every day (we do the One Year Bible) and are planning to continue that with our daughter once she is born in October.

Answer by Absolute Guess
Very small kids does not read (mostly). The rest will learn about sex, rape and murder before the age of 10 anyway.

I believe they have children’s editions available that leave out all the pesky violence, and focus all on the shiny happy parts.

I had one as a child.

I took a long time to get over the religion instilled in me.

Answer by Edward O
Yes, you can let them read some stories that are familiar and common; other stories they might not understand (like the Maccabees for example.)

!!Health tips :It’s very easy to get sucked into the constant advertising of baby powders, creams, and lotions. But the best baby lotion is plain old olive oil—cheap, natural, and un-perfumed. As for other products, keep it as natural, organic, and fragrance-free as possible.
reading to young children–: Where can I read to Young children?
I have to do some community reading for my english 150 requirement, but I can’t seem to find anyone that will let me read to their kids. I’ve checked with several schools and churches but you have to either go through training or have a background check, which will take too long. My teacher wasn’t very helpful on suggesting places. I’m from albuquerque, so anyone knows of any places that led people read, it would be very helpful.

Aren’t those kids’ reefer jackets marvelous, especially the ones trimmed with all that fancy braid? :) Not quite sure I would wear them if I were a child but those suits do make quite a grand statement.

  1. The same as teaching a child calculus – you don’t. You build up with simple counting procedures, move on to addition and subtraction, continue with a little algebra, etc.

A little common sense goes a long way. Sadly, you don’t seem to have much, or you wouldn’t ask this kind of a question.

  2. Of course they do, how else do you indoctrinate someone.

  3. The Bible is the book of life,it contains nothing that all Gods children don’t have a right to know. But Im sure there are comprehension issues to a certain degree. Until the age of accountability, there are educators that determine what is best suited for each age group.

  4. No. Definitely not.

Please go to the library, children’s section and ask the librarian for appropriate books. Alot of terrific children’s books have great moral values. The majority of them are not half as scarey as the bible.

  5. The Bible is not “dedicate” to solely adults. It is open to everyone to read. Clearly some of its text contains passages which are not to be read by people of young age. Still, in the Bible there are many stories and parables which are interesting to read (and read again) for young kids, which can also teach them some good things. Searching the internet and book stores can help too =)

  6. An Earthly Hope

I don’t think adults give children enough credit. Kids are smart and I think they should also learn at an early age to read and study the bible.

  7. I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and both my children, in early 20’s now, were not only read to from the Bible but learned to read by reading the Bible. They have to be taught from infancy what God’s laws are and what He will do to correct the wrong doings of Satan. This way it’s in their hearts of what is good and bad.

I agree certain portions are “inappropriate” for a young child without the guidance of an adult. Just like navigating near a busy highway is a time an adult would hold the hand of a young child.

Children are not meant to make their way in the world alone. That’s why they have parents and the parents have responsibilities toward them, including, but not limited to, spiritual.

    Deuteronomy 6:6,7
6 And these words that I am commanding you today must prove to be on your heart; 7 and you must inculcate them in your son and speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up.

    Proverbs 22:6
“Train up a boy according to the way for him; even when he grows old he will not turn aside from it.”

Children who are trained with God’s standards are honest, kind, even while young and certainly as adults. Our congregations are filled with them. They aren’t hustled into a nursery to color pictures of Jesus. They sit by their parents and look up scriptures and offer comments. You will be stunned if you ever visit a Kingdom Hall.

And do you think a loving parent would say “oh look, Tamar and Dinah got raped. Here’s what rape is” Don’t be foolish. A loving parent would begin with all the wonderful promises that the Bible holds out for faithful followers. The theme of the Bible is God’s kingdom. What will that kingdom do?

Wipe out all existing man made governments (Dan 2:44) Ruin those ruining the earth (Rev 11:18) and fill the earth with good people (Psalm 37: 10, 11) Even a child wants to know how he can be one of those people, wouldn’t you?

Quit being sarcastic and ask your heavenly father to open your heart to the truth.

  9. 1) Christians: Do you recommend that young children read the Bible?

In the not-too-distant past children in the U.S. were *customarily* encouraged to read the Bible even at a very young age.

There *is* a lot of adult content – but not *descriptive* – that is, not explicit. Did David have sex with Bath-Sheba? Sure. How does the Bible describe it? “David knew her” or “David had sexual relations with her”. This is hardly “adult”!!!

There are only a few passages in the Bible that I can think of that really qualify as “adult”, and they probably would not be understood by the average young reader:
    * the sin of Onan
    * the circumcision of Moses’ son
    * the prophecy of Ezekiel

There are a few Mosaic regulations regarding nocturnal emission that also might be considered adult in theme and which also would almost certainly not be understood accurately by a young reader.

So: I see no reason to not recommend reading the Bible. There are translations at a 3rd-grade reading level available.
