1st get weaning advice from your health visitor,,
the 1st thing to try is baby rice,, then slowly start introducing new foods,,mainly fruits and vegs to start with but one at a time so you know whats caused a reaction if one happens. dont add salt or sugar. mashed banana is good,,mango’s, papaya,,stewed apple,,mashed sweede, pureed peas ,,
but seriously, get some advice from the health visitor,,im sure they will have leaflets etc,,

Answer by Eunice
Make sure they’re fully cooked. Baking is your best bet to keep all the nutrients. Add water to make digesting easier. You can use any fruits and veggies at 6 months unless your Dr. tells you otherwise.

With my second daughter I never spoon fed her any kind of baby food, puree or mashed crap. When babies are ready to eat solids they will be able to grab whole solid food and self feed.

Rice cereal is junk food…skip it.

look up baby led weaning (european term) and do some reading on it.

I made a lot of my baby’s food as buying it can be so expensive. Bananas and applesauce and maybe some rice cereal is good. You can do just about any combo of fruit except for acidic ones like oranges, grapefruits, etc. Whenever I cooked our meals, I would take the vegetable and/or meat, put it in the blender with enough water to get the blender to start blending good, let it blend for about a minute and it’s so smooth and baby loved it. Never had problems with digestive or gas problems. The more you do, the more creative you’ll get. Mac n cheese is great too, to blend up. I would make a box of mac n cheese sometimes and mix with like a cooked cheese pizza or with spaghetti and it was good!
Just add a little water at the beginning, turn it on, then add until it starts turning from bottom to top and down. In other words, mixing up and blending freely. That should be enough water to dilute it. Remember, baby isn’t used to spices and flavorful stuff like we are, so anything simple tastes great to them. Hope this helps :)

Note: I just realized how old your baby is. I would do more bland and easy to digest kind of food first. Like the mac n cheese, bananas, applesauce and cereal etc and maybe only start at just once a day unless she’s already been eating food. Once my daughter reached about 8 or 9 months, I fed her a lot more different stuff.

And 1 more tip :)
I would make more than she needed and put the extra in these little 1 cup containers I got from walmart. I might leave a couple days worth in the fridge and then I would freeze the rest and get it out as she needed it. Worked great! It’s hard to make some for just one sitting so I made extra and didn’t have to make some everyday.

You can get a book by Annabelle Karmel, its brilliant! It tells you all the foods your baby can eat at different stages of weaning.

If you want to start with purees (or mush), fruits and vegetables are fine to start with. Peel and steam it, or bake it whole (apple, pear or sweet potato, squash) and mash it. You can thin with a bit of water, breastmilk or formula if you want to. You can also use mashed ripe banana or avocado without steaming. Start with one food for several days, then try another. You feed once a day at the beginning, just a tablespoonful in tiny bites off a spoon. Do not feed from a container of food, as the saliva starts the digestion process and if you store the food it spoils quickly. Meat is also good to use, as it has the iron the baby needs, but some babies are slow to accept meat in the beginning.

Many mothers start with rice, but babies don’t have the enzymes to digest cereals, although breastmilk does supply them. Do not mix foods until baby has had each for several days. If there is a reaction ( rash, runny nose, congestion), stop the food and don’t offer it again for several months, and not without discussing it with the doctor.

As the baby is able to pick items up and get them to the mouth, you can offer finger foods such as baby puffs and cheerios, as well as soft bits of egg and cooked fruit and vegetables. Be careful not to offer hard things the baby can choke on. And never give a child under the age of a year honey in any form.

I would buy a decent hand blender that comes with its own pot. Should be better then using a large food processor. If possible stick with fresh fruit or veg. I’m sure you will already have stuff at home, such as apples, bananas, pears etc. This should be a good start, and you can’t go too far wrong with these foods.

Question–: Do you make your own baby food? What special tools do you need?
Other than a blender or food processor, what things did you buy?

Did you have to go anywhere special to buy your appliances/tools?

I don’t know much about making baby food but I do know that the people I know who have tried it give it up quickly because it’s alot of trouble. It’s just as healthy as the stuff in the jars and it’s alot more expensive since you have to buy the food processor and all the other tools–the jars are just easier..trust me.

All you need is a blender or food processor, and ice cube trays. I used to make my own baby food when my kids were younger. Cook whatever you want to use, blend it well, and freeze it. I made everything except spaghetti and squash. If you plan on traveling, though, go for the storebought babyfood. It keeps longer.

Answer by Julia
It’s really easy!!! Just steam everything or use a dutch oven (a pot that slow cooks in the oven) I used my blender and froze everything in serving-sized containers. It is so healthy for your child and less expensive in the long run.

I used to make my daughter homemade oatmeal sometimes because she liked it better than rice cereal. Generally I would take some rolled oats and blend it up until it was a powder, then I would cook it with bottled water (our tap water tastes like chlorine) then put it back in the food processor with some baby-food fruit until nice and smooth and give it to her. Sometimes I would make apple cinnamon too- she loved the cinnamon! Other than that it’s much easier at first to use the finely pureed baby foods from the store since it’s really hard to get things smooth enough for a little baby, but as a child gets older you can take things from the table and mash them with a fork or potato masher- or throw them in the blender for a few seconds to chop up into little pieces.

I dont think you need anything besides a blender or food procesor… You simply boil potatoes, carrots, etc and beef/chicken and then blend it…

Answer by paisleyrachel
I never bought baby food from the store.

All you need is your food processor or blender and good healthy whole-food recipies. I recommed using whole foods and a Cuisinart.

Good mommy!

I don’t know what LovelyEmily did that would make making your own baby food so hard, but it’s not hard at all.

All you need are a couple of ice trays, and a blender or food processor. And they have this little kit at walmart, they call it a Guacamole and Salsa kit that’s on clearance for and it has the perfect little food processor in it. It’s small, and takes up just a little more space than a coffee cup, and it’s a lot cheaper than those big ones, if you don’t have one already.

You can do almost any babyfood at home too.

Avacado, carrots and bananas are all easy. My mom makes homemade apple sauce, and we just run a few jars of it in the blender as we’re making it, for my son.

There is a book called Super Baby Food by Ruth Yarron. A MUST HAVE!!! Not only does she go through soooo many different kinds of food, she has great money saving ideas, ideas for quick toddler type foods, and even arts and crafts ideas.

She tells you how to store food and the best way to prepare it. For example, you can freeze many foods in ice cube trays for the perfect infant-sized portion but you don’t want to freeze potatoes because they take on a bitter flavor. Interesting, eh?

She also tells you when it is ok to introduce different kinds of foods. This will help save you lots of money and your kid’s health because you are bypassing the preservatives of pre-fab baby food and as we should all know… we are what we eat.

Kudos mama for taking an interest in making your own food!
