Question–: Can a school put a “general” ed teacher’s desk in the special ed classroom or does this violate FERPA?
We have a 7th/8th grade special ed resource room. Sometimes actual classes are being conducted (by the special ed teacher/staff) for kids who are pulled out, sometimes there are 504 or IEP kids who are mainstreamed but have accommodations for test taking, study halls, etc. The school wants to put the desk of a new teacher who is a literacy specialist out in the special ed resource room. This teacher is NOT part of special ed; she is on call to help with literacy in the classrooms, train teachers, etc. I have parents who are very concerned that having a teacher who isn’t at all involved with their (special ed) child’s education in the special ed classroom is a violation of FERPA. I should explain that the resource room is out in a portable, and there’s no way to section off part of the classroom for the other teacher without her having to walk through the special ed room. Does this violate FERPA?

I doubt it is a violation…as long as they are not discussing students or sharing paperwork….the teacher knows what kind of instruction goes on the classroom..

literacy in the classroom–: Why do people enjoy the “Twilight” book so much?
I am doing an assignment for my “Developing Literacy in Diverse Classrooms” class and I have to choose a genre or a book that I do not find interesting. “Twilight” has been stirring up the country for some time now, but it just does not keep my attention for more than a couple of minutes. I need to know why people find this fantasy novel so interesting, what calls you to keep reading? Please be honest and helpful. Thanks!

I think I only liked it because my best friend liked it.
Shallow, yeah, but that’s my reason.
Even though the writing style was bland–I was sort of bored for the first 100…or 150…pages–I still somehow wanted to actually see what happened next. I just wanted to know, because the plot was pretty interesting (and then I realized that it was borrowed from Wuthering Heights). I finished the saga because hey, gotta finish what you started, right? It wasn’t a COLASSAL waste of time. It was sort of interesting. Different, at least.
And then I stopped liking it so much after reading a few Stephen Kings and some Ann Rice.

People love it because its a classic love story with a twist that you don’t know whether gets resolved or not. The literacy is beyond what some famous authors are capable of. I personally love the books, but not the movies. I think that you can’t portray what Stephenie Meyer has created onto a big screen.

Twilight would definitely be my biggest guilty pleasure. I think that the story is so different and now, these days all the stories are about forbidden romance etc. but twilight saga is the one that started it. I would say that the fact that the idea for the story was so new and fresh, that it pulled so many readers in. The Twilight theme is something that has been copied by so many authors, it must mean that it holds something special that everyone enjoys.
Hope I helped you!

First of all, we don’t use quotes when we’re talking about a book.
Second, I understand Twilight was poorly written and had no plot, but there was something about it that got me so interested. I guess because, in a way, Bella reminded me of myself (average looking, not very popular, terrible at sports, brown hair and brown eyes, and clumsy), and, well, I’ve loved vampires since I was a small child (it’s a shame that these vampires sparkle).

I found the author’s writing difficult to get into at first, but the characters themselves drew me into the story. I couldn’t put the books down for wanting to know what was going to happen, who she was going to choose, which characters would live or die. It is mindless entertainment.
