Q&A–: How do you best go about introducing finger foods for babies?
Hello everyone. Even though this is my second child, I need help here. The first time around I was so nervous and thought that this was the hardest part of the first few years. Anyhow, my daughter started cereals and baby food at 6 months. Around 9 months, I introduced Gerber Puffs. For about a month, she just played with them and would maybe eventually eat them. Now she is about 10.5 months. Just this week, she started to enjoy the puffs and ate a few of the Gerber wagon wheels (however today she put nearly a whole wheel in her mouth at once…not good). I have tried to introduce her to mashed banana, canned peas, tiny bits of canned peaches..none of which she would put into her mouth…just plays around on her tray. Ground chicken taco meat is the only real food that she has shown any interest in eating. Anyhow, I need help about what/how to try to progress after the puffs. As I said before, this eating thing makes me very nervous. Thanks.

If she’s gaining weight and growing properly I wouldn’t worry about it. My second is a little older than yours and all she wants to do is nurse. She’ll eat a few of those Gerber stars on occasion but she’s absolutely not interested in anything else but breastmilk. She’s over the 75th percentile on her chart and they are telling me not to worry b/c she’s growing well and she’ll be fine even if she doesn’t want anything else until she’s interested in table food. Fine with me — less mess to clean up! Good luck! :)

I was the same way with my 1st child. I was afraid she would get choked on a Cheerio :) . With my 2nd child, I just started feeding him table food. I bought a little food mill at Babies R us (I think it was under ) and ground up our meat or anything else we were eating that couldn’t be broken up. We have mashed potatoes a lot, and he ate them really well. I didn’t like the gerber wagon wheels, they also made me really nervous. And those biter biscuits were bad too! Just try to give her what you are having and see what happens. Sometimes babies think they are missing the good stuff. Oh, I also gave him yogurt with the fruit mixed in. Just do it, because my daughter (1st) still doesn’ t eat well and I blame myself for being so paranoid about what she was eating. My son will eat us out of house and home. Good luck!

Try some cheese. My now 17 month old loved it from the beginning. Either give her some shredded of your choice or break up a slice and fold them so they are easier to pick up. I tried the wagon wheels and didn’t like them for that same reason. But he lliked the puffs and still does. He will eat baby carrots that I have cooked but not canned carrots and he wants nothing to do with peaches. I think it is the texture. How many teeth does she have? If she has her front ones and at least one set of her molars you might try something like goldfish. Good luck.

She’ll eat when she’s ready. My first had to be starved into self-feeding (I’m exaggerating) and my second refused to be spoon-fed the day she turned 10 months old. Shredded chicken was a big hit in my house, as well as corn, peas, green beans, broccoli, tortillas, toast, shredded cheese, Cheerios, shredded beef, shredded pork, spaghetti (chopped well), banana, avocado, chopped mandarin oranges, melon, apple slices and whatever I was eating.

I would just keep doing what you are doing. She doesn’t really have to be eating finger foods right now. She will start eating them when she is ready.Don’t worry, sweetie!

Every child is different and wants to do things that THEY want. It’s their way of having control over something. You might want to start by cutting the wheels in half if that makes you nervous. Also try to mash the peas and see if she goes for it. Then once she’s used to that particular taste give her the whole pea. Some children just take longer to get into those foods. Also, making sure they are actually hungry when trying helps. Sometimes my children didn’t want to try because they just had formula/milk or was snacking before mealtime.

Question–: What are some good finger foods for babies?
My daughter is 8 1/2 monthes old. She doesn’t like to eat pureed food because she wants to feed herself. She has her four front teeth (2 top, 2 bottom) and has three coming in. She has no problem eating cheerios and her teething cookies. She even knows to eat one at a time and to take bites out of something that is bigger. Please help with any ideas.

My baby girl will be 9 months the 28th of this month and she is the same way. I just cut up pasta in small pieces and other foods that are soft. Bananas are good also. Just anything that you can cut in small pieces and that are soft will be good for her. Good luck.

Bananas
Cheese

My daughter is nine months old and the doctor told me that she could eat what we eat, provided it is healthy and not too salty (minus peanut butter and honey). We just cut everything into small pieces and watch her to make sure she is handling the food okay. Some of her favorite foods are:
broccoli florets
cauliflower florets
pasta (elbow macaroni with red sauce or meat sauce)
grilled cheese
cheddar cheese pieces
cheese quesadillas with salsa (she likes spicy)
chicken enchiladas
bananas
cheerios
pancakes w/o syrup or anything
pieces of sweet potato
strawberries
kiwi
refried beans and black beans
peas
pickles! (so weird)
little pieces of chicken, fish, or turkey

wow…there are a lot of things! :) She is not picky. She loves everything. We just try it!
