Question–: Finger foods for babies?
My son is 7 months old, and from what I’m reading, he should be starting to eat small pieces of cheese, etc, by picking them up with his fingers. I am making all his food, and I’m starting to not puree it quite as much, so it’s a little chunkier. He’s got 2 teeth so far, with another two about to pop out.

What do you feed your 7 or 8 month old and when did you start? And do you give them “finger foods?”

The answer in the following: (Hint: The answer is not necessarily.)

My son is 9.5 months old. He still mainly eats Puree’s and the only chunks he gets is in the little “Puffs”. He loves these and has to gum them to eat them. When he was 7 months old, I still cut them in 1/2 so he would not gag, because it can scare you! We eat stage 2 foods, but are about to move to stage 3…the catch with my son, though, is he STILL has not teeth!!!

Gerber puffs are always good, little pieces of bread, cheerios and crackers are good too. I think I started giving him finger foods around 7 1/2 months old, but he wasn’t able to feed himself, I had to help him out, but after a few weeks he had it down pat… just watch your baby closely when offering new finger foods, that way you know his limits. My sons 1 year now and there really isn’t anything he doesn’t eat, unless it’s spicy or extremely hard, like hard candy, he can pretty much handle everything and he only has 2 teeth also.

Most parents I know started with crackers or cheerios around 7 months and maybe even toast. My sisters gave their kids frozen green beans when teething so they would have something healthy to chew on. Or my sitter gave her daughter whole carrots to chew on when teething.

Wow I wish my son had teeth! lol he eats the Gerber puff snacks. We are going to try cheerios soon. Anything he can mash with his gums I give him. He’s 8 months old and I got the guts to try at about 7.5 months.

My son is 15 months when he was 8 months he refused baby food and only ate cut up table food (he had 2 teeth). we started with chucks of banana and avacado, cheerios, peas, black beans, blueberries, etc
he ate everything I would just cut it into pieces the size of a pea and he did fine.
I haven’t tried tofu with him but that is supposed to be a great one too.

I wait to introduce solids to my children until they actually pick up food and feed themselves and skip the pureed spoon stage altogether. So at that point they can have much of what everyone eats as long as it’s soft and chewy.

We do avocado, tofu, cheese, pasta, bread, finely chopped meat like fish (no allergies in our family), rice, bananas, small cubes of apples, ripe pear, cooked soft carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, etc.

You can give them soft things…

Banana
Avocado
Toast
Ham
Pancake
Pear
Peaches
Hot dog
Pasta
Etc

Just make sure to cut things up small and never leave the baby alone, it only takes a second to choke.

she was eating finger food even before she had teeth. cheese, crackers, fruit, steamed veggies, pickles, toast, snacks like puffs and biter biscuits. I started at 6 months but it was sporadic. she was probably 8-9 months before it was daily

Answer by Working mom&wife :)
I smashed everything pretty good until around 9 months. At 7 months she was eating softer foods like avocado, toast chunks, cheerios, bananas, eggs, etc. We started introducing food at almost 6 months.

Parents need to read ingredients more carefully; nutritious food does not come in “puff” format — those Gerber things are no better than Cheetos. Avoid the crap in the convenience aisle of the supermarket.

Yes to finger foods. Steamed veg is great. Thinly sliced apple is, unlike a lot of fruits, not too slippery for little hands. You can smear all sorts of things on the veg or on toast or whatever — tzatziki, hummus, etc.

Question–: When will baby start eating finger foods? More grown up food? Or when did your baby start?
My pediatrician said a couple more months, my son is 5 months. He’s been eating solids for a month now and is very curious. He likes to get his hands into the baby food and reach for the spoon. When did your baby start eating finger foods?
I know he’s not ready. ^_^ Just curious and I can’t wait for that fun my siblings went through with their kids! :-D

Hi, my daughter started eating finger foods around 9 months – she had cheerios and very very small pieces of things. You have a little ways to go I think – babies like to explore textures of foods though but I don’t think baby is quite ready yet for toddler finger foods ;) He just likes the textures of the stuff you’re giving him! And he sounds like he’s having a lot of fun doing it.

Answer by Liam: The wonder-baby!
My son just started on Gerber Puffs and those little dissolvable wagon wheels (also Gerber). And Baby Mum Mum’s. He is newly 7 months (he started at I guess 6.5 months). He was just like your son, grabbed the spoon, tried to use it to feed himself, watched us eat, reached for our foods, etc. He is doing really good with what he eats now, but has a few more weeks before I plan to give him more finger foods. I am thinking of manderin oranges (broken into pieces), diced cooked carrots, etc. Anything soft and easy to mash up. I do still worry about choking, since he is so young and has no teeth. I just use sensible caution.

I think my daughter started around 8 months (maybe a little earlier). I really just followed her lead – she simply did not seem interested before. My son is going on 6 months in a little less than 2 weeks and has been showing some serious interest in what we eat. When I feed him, he grabs the spoon and tries to take control. If he’s on my lap and I eat, he will try to grab stuff that’s in my plate or my fork. I have not tried yet and don’t think he’s ready, but I feel he will be soon (and I definitively will wait to speak with the doc too). My friend’s son started around 6 months. He had always been super interested in food, had been eating solids since he was 4months, progressed quickly and was a very solid little guy.

I actually started giving him cheerios to pick up and feed himself at 6 months. I tried giving him small pieces of fruits and veggies then too but I was afraid he was going to choke on it so I used a mesh feeder.

He wouldn’t let me feed him off a spoon.

I waited until 8 months to allow my twins to self-feed anything or have finger foods. I was very afraid of choking with the girls. First time mom back then. :-D

When my son was 7.5 months I started giving little pieces of things other than his baby food and bottles.
I did a lot of buying sweet potatoes and avocado and giving him tiny pieces of those. Or little pieces of banana if I was eating one (or mash them up a bit to give more texture)
He did good with Gerber Yogurt Melts but I broke each one in half.
Hes 8 months tomarrow and he has TINY little pieces of wheat bread/toast.
And mashed potato (but with no butter or salt, just potato)

My older son started at about 8 months old with a few things here and there, just trying them out, by 9 months old he was eating a lil bit of table food regularly and by 10 months old he was eating about half table food and half baby food (for solids), he was still haveing lots of formula as well.

My twin boys haven’t even started baby food yet, lol, they are nearly 6 months old (will be on June 1st)
:D

  1. I think it depends on your baby. My baby started solid food at 6 month & she still doesn’t like anything other than breast milk directly from me – she’s 7 month old. She has almost 2 teeth but she does not know how to chew so if I give her anything, she just pits them out or just swallows it. I tried some soft little pieces of banana but I think she’s not ready yet for her finger food.
I make my baby’s food too & I love this web site!

  2. Dont ever give a baby hot dogs..nott only are they extremely unhealthy they are a major choking hazard. cheerios are the healthiest of the first finger foods. The suggestions already posted are good for the most part…
