6 months for baby food. You have about 4 more months to go

Answer by KC
The EARLIEST you can give a baby solid food is 17 weeks. Giving a newborn solid food is a big no no. She has an immature digestive system, she physically cannot eat them (she’ll have the tongue thrust reflex that’ll push out any solids from her mouth), you’ll set her up for countless problems when she’s older (allergies and the like) and newborns are not “designed” to have anything other than formula or breast milk.

Answer by Timid Women Rarely Make History
No earlier than four months, recommended to wait until six months. Before then, their digestive system is not mature enough to handle it. It can cause stomach upset and irregular bowel movements. Some babies if given solids before they are ready can get really constipated, mainly with the baby cereals.

I started giving my son rice cereal at 3 1/2 months, pureed fruits and veggies at 4 1/2 months and meats at 6 months. I was going to wait until 6 months like everyone else recommends but his doctor said that it was totally fine to give him food at the ages I mentioned.

7 weeks is much to young to start any food. I’m sure you are excited and eager to start foods but you may be in for a world of frustration starting food so soon. My son that was introduced to food early is a horrible eater and has many allergies, including peanuts. It’s really best to wait until 6 months to give any food and later if your family has a history of allergies.

Answer by Damian’s little sister due 12/6
7 weeks is way too early to begin even introducing rice cereal! You should wait until at least 4 months, 16-17 weeks. Then you can start with just a little rice cereal once or twice a day and go from there. Your daughter’s digestive tract is still developing and can’t handle anything besides milk/formula right now.

Answer by Allison’s mommy
between 4-6 months is when you can start rice cereal

Answer by It’s just me
When your baby loosing the tongue thrust is the best indicator of when he is ready for solids. Infants have this natural mechanism to prevent choking. Basically any time a solid is in their mouth their tongue thrusts it back out. This is a huge reason why you see so many messy face pictures of (too young )babies eating purees. When your child is ready for the cereals and purees it goes in and goes down almost as clean as a child eating, not counting the finger painting messes that is! The tongue thrust disappears anywhere from 3-6 months. But mostly around 4-5 months.

I would wait until at LEAST 6 months. You have to consider that their little bellies are still developing on the inside and are not able to digest food yet. I know it’s SO exciting to feed them but you need to wait until their body can handle it :-)

Answer by Kittykatemmebot
Your baby is way, way too young. Breast milk is what she needs right now, or if you are not nursing, then formula. Solids are best introduced at 6 months although some people start them at 4 months.

Q&A–: When can I start feeding baby food to my little one?
I was just wondering how soon I can give her those little glasses with mashed fruit and all that good stuff. I heard it is 4-6 months but every baby is different. When did you start?

6 months is the recommended age by the AAP. My son had to start on solids at 5 months because he wasn’t gaining weight appropriately, but that was under the care of his pediatrician. I would have waited until he was 6 months old, had that not been the case, because studies show that babies who start solids too soon are at higher risk for developing diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, etc later in life.

Answer by Pippin
Current recommendations are to wait until 6 months, unless baby CLEARLY needs something a bit earlier — but still never before 4 months.
And some babies arent’ interested until after 6 months, and some mothers choose to skip the little jars and wait until baby is ready for and can eat table foods. (Solids will be mostly ‘just for fun’ until baby is close to a year old.)

I started at around 5 1/2 months. For you — I’d recommend waiting until 6 months, and from there, whatever seems to work for you and your baby is fine.

Answer by kdlady96
It’s recommended to wait until 6 months to start solid foods. That’s how long I waited with my son.

Answer by BoSox
Every baby may be different, but their digestive systems are roughly the same. Don’t start solids until 4 – 6 months. Ideally, you should wait until 6 months. Your baby gets all of the nutrition she needs from breast milk or formula for the first year of life anyway.

My daughter started showing an interest in food around 5 months and we were approved by our doctor to start her on strained foods like carrots etc. She had already been getting baby cereal for a few weeks before that too. It depends on the baby really, and your doctor’s advice

Answer by crystal
6 months is the preferred age but some are not always ready. you will be able to tell he or she will turn there head or not open mouth at all or gag

I started when my son was 5 1/2 months. Of course, the main source was still my breastmilk, but i let him try some fruits and vegetables. He loved bananas and steamed brocolli. Also i started with a rice cereal, which he loves until now..

Answer by Jarrett Wilder’s Mommy
My son was started on solids at four months of age. My husband and I made this decision on our own against the advice of my son’s doctor. He is our child and we felt it was best for him and that he was ready. The first time I fed him it was pears because fruit is sweeter so I took two baby spoon fulls with a little rice cereal and a tiny amount of water and mixed it. He took to it right away and did not spit it out. So, I fed him any stage one foods that are with a P (prunes, pears, peaches, peas, sweet potatoes) and kept him on it for a week to make sure he had no allergic reactions. Then I moved onto carrots, green beans, bananas etc. Then I moved him over to stage two after making sure he was not allergic to any stage one foods because stage two is mixed with all types of fruits and vegetables.

My son is now nine months and healthy and in the a great percentile for height and weight and I have no regrets on making the decision to feed him at 4 months of age. Some people tell me well he is going to be obese and have health problems. No I do not believe that. I believe obesity comes from genetics and environment and if the person is active.

Mrs. Weasley Feeds Her Babies
feeding baby food

We have a bird that hatched some eggs in a corner on our porch. We call the Mama bird "Mrs. Weasley." (we haven’t come up with names for her 3 kids yet).

As you can see, they baby birds are still pretty tiny.

Give it about 10 seconds for the action to start then wait a few more for super cuteness.

The recommended age for introducing solids is 4-6 months. Up until then babies get their nutrients from breastmilk or formula. With both our boys we started at 5.5 months old. Our youngest went straight onto finger foods. He did extremely well. His first food was banana. It was hilarious I think more food got in his hair than in his mouth but he really enjoyed it. At the moment he loves broccoli. Hopefully that will keep up :)
