Q&A–: how to make and store baby food?
i want to make my own baby food for my 6 month old baby (well turns 6months in a weeks time), i would like to give him healthy foods such as fruits and veg – what are the best fruit and veg to start off with and how? also what are the quick mehtods to freeze foods and how long will it last? i have started off with pure baby rice once a day, and now in the last few days have give him cow and gate porridge (banana and strawberry). i think i will feed him bought breakfast (cow and gate packet cereals/porridge), but would like to make my own baby food for other meals.

thanks

Just cut it up in small pieces and grind it in the blender so there are no hard parts. And serve it to them that way…

The usual stuff — carrots, peas, apples, squash, bananas, cereals, that sort of thing. You’ll probably also want some steamer baskets and a food mill or blender, and likely a crockpot for the cereals. There are a couple of baby food cookbooks, though I don’t know any titles.

As for storing it, you might actually want to get a book on canning (the latest edition of “Putting Food By” or something like that; the USDA has plenty of stuff published on canning and preservation). Being able to make the stuff shelf-stable might come in handy, since you won’t have to thaw it out before feeding.

Until a baby turns one, breastmilk SHOULD be his first source of nutrition! You’re fine, he’s fine. I’d put off weaning him for a bit longer. And just dont’ offer processed foods. He can’t eat them if you don’t offer them. Give cubed pears, peaches, avocado, sweet potato, yoghurt, peas, pasta….so many options, but even if he had nothing but breastmilk, that is totally fine :)

maybe he isn’t ready to wean?! he could also be having a little growth spurt, that’s what my son did around that time.
if you don’t like him eating the processed foods, don’t buy it. i use organic rice cereal, milk and yogurt to make a rice pudding dessert! that way i know what is in it.
it’s probably a stage, he’ll get over it and you guys will be fine! good luck!

Why not wait until the recommended 12 months at least to wean him? And just keep trying to introduce different foods. don’t force the issue if he doesn’t want it, just try again in a week or so. Some babies are fussy and take time to warm up to new flavours and textures. When did you start him on solids? Have you tried baby cereal? Yogurt? Applesauce? Keep experimenting and he will start eating more.
