cost of baby formula–: How much does whole milk for baby cost per month?
My baby is close to 12 months, and we’re going to be switching him to whole milk soon. I’m just wondering what your average monthly cost is for those of you who have your babies on whole milk. Formula seems like it’s getting more expensive and the amount in the can is shrinking! I am hoping I’ll be saving money in the future w/ whole milk! Thanks. :)

I would imagine no more than 25.00/month.

Answer by Jill P
How much you’ll spend really depends on how much your baby drinks (all babies are different), but cow’s milk is WAY cheaper than formula. My son (now 2) drinks about 1/2 gallon per week, which usually costs about .25……..

Answer by Pippin
Whole milk is whole milk. It costs the same regardless of who in the family is drinking it. Around here, whole milk runs about .75-.00 a gallon. If a toddler averages around 20 ounces/day, he’ll go through about 2 gallons a week. If you prefer to buy organic milk, it will cost more. (I think it costs about double around here.)

it is much cheaper giving them whole milk compared to formula youll find youre saving more. when my daughter turned 1 id buy 6pt bottles of whole milk for her and shed have a couple of cups a day. not sure of the actual cost but id say around £20-25 per month as opposed to 30-40.

Answer by Diet C
I make donations to my neighbors farm per gallon of whole raw milk (the stuff is delicious, supermarket milk can kiss my booty now). They gives us 2-3 gallons a month on average.
We’re not really big milk drinkers, mostly use it for cooking.

Answer by vs2008
Here is the calculation for my son. 2$/gallon and about 8 gallons a month. so you are looking at about 24$/month. If you but organic, you would be spending 40-50$ a month. It can go higher depending upon the city/state you live in. It would still be cheaper than formula.

Answer by juniefar

Q&A–: baby formula costs are killing me.?
My son goes through a large can of formula in less than 4 days. It costs me for each can. The costs are killing me. I don’t have a lot of money and it worries me. I try to feed him more baby food so that maybe he will drink less formula, but he isn’t too keen on the food yet. he is 6 months old. How old do they have to be to have just regular organic milk? cause it would be so much less expensive. but i don’t think that he is old enough. i applied for wic, but they said i will have to wait ATLEAST 3 more months cause the huge waiting list.

I switched my girls all to homogonised milk (3%) at 6 months old..Many Moms will tell you not tobut my dr said as long as they were eating baby cereal and foods we were good to go. and I have 4 beautiful, smart, busy girls to show for it!

Have you tried WIC?

I believe the average time to start on cows milk is 12 months. 6 months is to young.

Answer by fuzzy wuzzles
Regular milk isn’t even recommended at a year old, they say to begin with cows milk, but you can’t fedd your baby milk in place of his formula, it doesn’t have what he will require to be come healthy and nurished. Why did you have a baby if you couldn’t care for it? If he’s 6 months old you can start him on cereals, etc and start on solids. If I were you I’d get off this site and talk to your doctor and do some researching.

Answer by Aundrea
They say to switch to cows milk when the child is 1 year old. Trust me, I KNOW your pain. Have you check online to sign up for coupons? Try Craigslist, some parents are trying to get rid of unused formula for a cheaper cost, even eBay. Just make sure it’s still sealed and not expired.

Your other option, if possible, is to switch to a store brand formula rather then Enfamil or Similac.

Hang in there!

Breastfeeding was free.

Answer by Alyssa’s mommy
Why does formula cost you a can? Just buy generics, you will save a ton. They are nearly half price. Your baby needs to be on formula until he is 12 months old, so just hang in there.

Look for sales and use coupons. Formula is expensive but kids can certainly do just fine on store brand formula when its on super sale.

Answer by Pippin
He will need to be a year old before he can be weaned from formula to regular milk. (Whole milk, organic or not, does not contain the correct balance of nutrients, and is very hard on his digestion.) Solid foods are also not a replacement for formula — they contain no fat, and few of the nutrients he needs.

Have you tried store brand formula? That may save you some money. If you’re already on store brand … not much else to suggest. You might try a food bank or crisis pregnancy center to see if they can help out. Otherwise … cut corners where you can. Your baby needs to be fed and yes, formula IS very expensive.

Answer by Megan
yeah, they can’t drink regular milk until at least about 10 months. But then they can’t just drink regular milk. They have to stay on formula until they are eating a lot more food. Try buying the cheaper brand formula. Ours was on Good Start but a couple of times we use the Target name brand and he never had a problem with it. A lot of people have told me the Wal-mart name brand is great also. But Target for sure is exactly the same as Good Start. Compare the back of the can they have the same things in them. Target brand is only like 12 dollars a can. So you can buy 2 for the price of the 1 other brand.

Answer by ~Witchy Woman~
No cow’s milk until the age of a year. Giving cow’s milk too early can cause anemia & other digestive issues. Basically all formulas are the same, except for the ones that are for special issues , like acid reflux etc. So if you go for a store brand like Target or Wal-mart you are getting the same ingredients and vitamins as the Brand named formulas. Also wholesale stores like Sam’s Club & Costco have their own brands and great deals on the formula.

hmmm. Is that how much generic formula is? I don’t think the brand matters. Also my cousin has a ff baby and she used everyone in her family’s address (including mine) and went online and signed up for free samples. Every brand, from walmart to similac. She had so many samples coming to everyone’s house.

  1. Okay what city do you live in, I never known wic to have a 3 month waiting list. Have you tried going on websites and req coupons. That might help you.

  2. Apply for WIC (women infant children) They will help with some of the cost of baby formula, and as your little one gets older, baby food.

  3. He’s way too young for cows milk, not until he’s a year old. Breastfeeding would have saved you a fortune, but it’s too late for that now. You might just have to switch brands to something cheaper, talk to your pediatrician before switching him though

Yikes! That is a TON of formula if we are thinking of the same can size… like…. too much formula.

    A few things:
** Discuss his formula intake with his Dr. 1 large can every 4 days seems excessive
** At $28.00 a can it sounds like you are giving him a name brand or possibly a special type of formula. Just because it costs a lot doesn’t make it’s nutritional value go up. We used Parent’s Choice Gentle and it was $15.00 a can plus I used a $3.00 off coupon. My son is doing great.
**Check ebay and Craigslist for formula. You can get it much cheaper.
** I have never heard of a 3 month wait for WIC. You need to call them back and start pressuring them
**Ask your Dr’s office for formula. With my first he was on a special type and they would give me all of their samples monthly. It helped out a lot.
** 1 year is when you can wean to whole milk although I started slowly weaning at 11 months.

I wish you the best. Sounds like you are in a pickle.

You could always buy store brand, sign up for websites for coupons, check your local salvation army (sometimes they have formula). Check your local churches for handouts, when it comes to babies usually there are no questions asked.

My best suggestion would be to do store brand. You DO NOT want to do regular milk, it is WAY too harsh on tummies. I’ve always had the best luck with WalMart’s parent’s choice. What brand is your son on now? Walmart’s store brand is identical to Similac and Target’s store brand is identical to Enfamil. There’s nothing wrong with store brands because of how tightly monitored formula regulations are. With formula, you’re paying for the name. Diapers, little different, those name brand are usually of much better quality. WIC also might have handouts or the food pantry might to hold you over. Also, the food pantry, I know in most states you can use their coupons for formula as well. If it is a shorter wait for you to do that, you could try that…but like I said my best suggestion is store brand formula. Babies R US makes a real good one now too.

  6. Since when does WIC have a waiting list? Where are you from? 3 more months? Try a different WIC office. If you are in a big city, there will be multiple WIC offices, 1 for each district, kind of like the cop shops.

  7. A large can of Target formula (in my over-priced, urban area) is $11. My son did great on it, there’s no reason at all not to use generics, all formula is the same.

Food should never replace formula, even for a baby that likes solids, until around one year. And he will not get the nutrients he needs from whole milk, especially since, as you imply, he isn’t yet eating a well-rounded diet of solids.

  8. They put you on a waiting list for WIC? Wow you must live in a pretty big area!!!

Maybe you need to check out other brands and see what is cheaper. I know Parent’s Choice is a good brand unless you have a specific formula the doc prescribed. We have to have Similac NeoSure cuz our daughter is a preemie and there isn’t a generic brand that carries that.

Otherwise you could talk to your doc about your concerns, and maybe he has some helpful resources for you. Good luck and hope this helps!!!

  9. greenisgoodbitch

Cow’s milk is not for babies (at least not until they’re a year old at the bare minimum). Are you eligible for any aid besides WIC? If not it seems you might have to cut back in some area of your life (make less purchases, buy cheaper goods) etc. Good luck.

**You could also check your local food bank.

  10. Sandy Mom of 2!

Call up WIC again, and let them know that you just can’t afford the formula any longer and you desperately need to get an appointment. If they still can’t get you in, contact some local churches in your area. A lot of churches receive donated cans of forumla that they pass out to families in need. Ebay and Craigslist also have people selling unopened formula for very cheap, or even giving it away. Also, research the store-brands. Wal-Mart sent me a flyer showing they had the same vitamins and minerals in their formula as the big brands. There are definately many options out there, I hope you find one that works for you!

  11. Give him more juice and water. You are suppose to sign up for WIC before your baby is born that’s why it’s taking so long now.

  12. Four days? You maybe over feeding him. You shouldn’t go through it that quickly with one 6 month baby.

You should buy in bulk or buy the Parents choice brand for like $12

  13. I Haz A Bucket.

You seem to be going through ALOT of formula. I have 2 babies and at 6 months a a large can would last us 4-5 days….For two…..Hes consuming almost 60oz a day…im sorry but thats alot of formula…You should try to get him more on to solids mine were not too keen either just be persistent with it.

And look into a generic brand they are cheaper but the same thing. Your paying for a name just like anything else. But thats alot of formula WAY above the average of 24-37oz…mine were having about 40oz then which was a little high….Im not sure but look into the store brands and just keep trying with the solids.
    Good Luck.

  14. call WIC every day in the morning to see if someone has canceled their appointment because they can give you that appointment. Our waiting list here in Fl. is the same but i called every other day for a week and i got appt that day.

  15. You can get formula and diapers for free! We do. My wife found this site that teaches you how to get diapers, formula, and other baby products all free. PrintablePampersCoupons.blogspot.com
The instructions say to go to diapers.com and make a 1 time purchase on diapers using the promo code: drop10 . You will receive $10 off your order by using the promo drop10. That will be your last time paying for diapers. Then you will receive your own promo code that when you share it with others you get credits added to your account on diapers.com (which has many baby products in addition to diapers). For every time people place an order that you referred, you will continue to receive cash added to your account. Then you can just sit back and watch your money grow! It’s so cool. They explain it better at their site.

  16. I buy the generic brand… the brand names cost twice as much. You can try WIC, but not everyone qualifies.

  17. PARENT’S CHOICE, I just saved you $14/can.

  18. Breast-Feeding is Free!!

But besides that, I would say to switch to the Store brands, they are just as good! Also, try ebay and craigslist many people see either coupons or unused formula very cheap! Give it a try, also look on parenting, and also the brand of formula you use to sign up for coupons!

I wish you luck! I know its hard, luckily I breast-feed*
