banana baby food–: Using banana baby food to add banana flavor to a cake–how best to do this?
If I wanted to add a slight banana flavor to a yellow cake (making a banana cream layer cake), and wanted to use baby food as opposed to the more fake flavoring…how would I do this? Is there anything else I should add and/or take away from the recipe so as to not mess with consistency?
I had some leftover banana baby food, hence the question. =)

If you are adding one little jar, there is nothing you need to do, really. If anything, just add a couple of tablespoons of flour. The stuff will bind well enough to the cake ingredients just as they are. My question to you is: why not use a 25 cent banana?
Answer by wizard of oz
I usually add a mashed banana much nicer

You can “make” bananas for baby by taking a spoon, taking a banana, scraping a bit of banana onto the spoon, feeding baby, scraping a bit more banana onto the spoon… Really much nicer for all concerned to have it fresh.
edit: lemon juice etc would work, but have you ever eaten old banana, brown or no? Quite gross.

You can add a tiny bit of lemon juice. The baby food in the jars usually has citric acid which does the same thing. Just test it with your baby first before you do it to all your banana baby food.

They don’t put anything in them, they can them so they will last, I’m sure they have huge expensive machines that seal the jars and take all of the air out to keep the bananas from spoiling. My grandpa cans green beans, and they can last for quit some time, but it’s a long tedious process. I used to work at a restaurant and we used bananas for some of out deserts, we put them in lemon juice to keep them fresh, just a tiny bit does the trick, and it keeps them from turning brown, you can try that, but make sure you taste it first that way it isn’t too bitter. Or if you baby is about 6 months you could always just cut them into small pieces, most babies by that age have the ability to chew things, and bananas are very mushy, my son has been eating them in chunks for quite a while now and he’s never once choked on them.

a little bit of lemon juice, or you can buy a product called fresh fruit that keeps the fruit from turning. (also works well on apples)
