Q&A–: when making baby puree food can you use canned fruits?
i know you aren’t suppose to use canned veggies due to sodium but i have a can of peaches. looking at the ingredients it looks like they added a big of sugar. So would that mean i shouldn’t use the canned fruits either?

Iffy. It would depend on what they use for a preserver. Some will use ascorbic acid which in babies with sensitive tummies can cause upset. If fresh is too expensive to buy on a regular basis, check out the frozen.

Answer by sarahabear
i personally would not, I also try not to give canned fruit to my 4 yr old. it is full of sugar corn syrup and preservatives, you are better off using fresh or flash frozen!

I’d think that the preservatives are crazy high and the sugars just aren’t great.

If you can go with fresh fruit opt for that first. But frozen is just as good as fresh :)

Canned fruit… I would use that as a last resort and if there was nothing else to eat..

Yeah, I think that you should avoid anything not packed in like pear juice.

Fresh is best but I did puree some canned veggies packed in water with no salt added and I pureed some canned fruits packed in pear juice when my twins were babies.

That was only in a pinch, though. I didn’t have any frozen in the house and it was like 2 days before payday and we were broke. *hiding head in shame*

I guess you COULD, but usually the canned foods have a higher sodium/sugar content which isn’t good for baby, not to mention other ingredients that are added, if baby is allergic or has a reaction you won’t know if it’s the fruit or another ingredient that was packed in it. I would say stay away from the canned things all together.

I wouldn’t. I made my son all his food. Fresh is best… but if you can’t go fresh then frozen is 2nd best. I would do fresh or frozen. Canned isn’t that great. I wouldn’t eat canned food and I wouldn’t give it to my baby. The canned fruits are often in corn syrup or something. You wouldn’t want to be giving your baby that.

Answer by proudmommy
I wouldn’t use them. They have so many preservatives, and the added sugar really isn’t good for little ones.

Answer by Doodlestuff
You can use canned fruits in a pinch, but I would stick with either fresh or frozen. They both have more nutrients. If you use canned fruits, use ones packed in juice. If you are stuck somewhere, you can use the ones packed in sugar, but rinse to remove as much of the syrup as possible.

Just a note to some posters: The first or second ingredient in formula is corn syrup usually listed as fructose.

Q&A–: should you use the water that you steam the vegetables in to puree w/ the baby food?
I’ve read it both ways and was wondering – when I’m making baby food – should I use the water I steam the vegetables and fruits with in the puree or use other water? all vegetables and fruits used are organic.
Thanks!

I they’re 100% organic and sterilized Do!! because many of the nutrients and minerals of vegetables and fruits are lost while steaming.

Answer by bpuzzled84
yes the water will be sanitized.

Answer by TwistedTania
Personally I dont think it would matter, to get the consistency you need you could use the water, as there would be some vitamins in the water other wise I dont think it matters
Hope that helps
I think its great that mums make their babies food when they can .
A long time ago *smile* when I was still in high school we had to buy a tin of baby’s sweet and a savoury food , I think I had beef and vegies and apricots and rice…… then we had to make it from scratch … homemade was so much nicer.

Answer by EyeDream
Yes, use the water from the vegetables because it has more benefits now than normal water.
