Q&A–: Refrigerate boiled water for powdered baby formula?
I use powdered baby formula and boil the water and prepare the bottles in advance. I was wondering if there are any problems with not refrigerating the bottles once they are filled with the water. Obviously it does have to be refrigerated with the formula in it, but what about just the water? Thanks in advance.

Its absolutely fine not to refridgerate it when its just water with no formula. It wont do bubs any harm and makes it easier on u when u go out! Take one container with water and the other with powder and mix them when required so u dont hav to stress about keeping it cold!! I do it all the time with no problems at all

Probably not a good idea…..unless you plan on using it the same day. You could always just put the prefilled bottles in the fridge. Or put the water in a sterilized container in the fridge so you don’t have a lot of bottles in there. Or you can buy “nursery water/baby water” in a gallon jug at the grocery store if you don’t want to boil it anymore.

my 5week old baby girl is on powder formula. i keep her water milk and bottles in her bedroom on the dresser and i prepare her bottles as i need them

I would be careful holding onto bottles of water at room temperature unless the bottles and water have been sterilized and they are completely sealed, as if you were canning with them. That’s probably not happening.. so you should probably refrigerate them.
Note to Stephanie. You keep your baby’s food and bottles in the same room in which you change your baby’s diapers? You keep water at room temperature? I’d be very careful with that… nasty organisms and stagnant water do NOT mix well.. and unless you’ve ever dealt with a baby who’s got an amoeba, you have no idea how horrible it can be.

If your baby is primarily formula-fed and you use a powdered or concentrated form, ask your ped whether you should use bottled water to mix it. The American Dental Association (ADA) is concerned that babies may be getting too much fluoride from tap water, increasing the risk of fluorosis. Fluorosis –white or brown streaks on the teeth that affect teeth when they ate forming before they erupt, and cases appear to be on the rise. The ADA is waiting for more research before giving definite guidelines. But in the meantime, it suggests that parents err on the side of caution and prepare formula with fluoride-free or low-fluoride bottled water. Look for jugs of water labeled as purified, demineralized, or distilled, which costs less than per gallon. If you use water-filtration system, check to see whether it removes fluoride, but keep in mind that BOILING WATER DOES NOT REMOVE FLUORIDE.

I just buy Nursery water at our grocery store for my baby’s needs and have not had any problem with it. If you decide to use tap water, first filter it then boil that way you will kill most bacteria and other potentially dangerous things in it. It is really important to do that. Tap water can get contaminated easily and it will be a few hours until the city notifies the public about potential dangers, you could have already exposed the baby to it. Not everything is killed through boiling. Definitely refrigerate, you can run it under hot tap water to warm it up.
If you use bottled water you don’t have to worry about refrigeration.

is there some reason you are boiling your babies water? do you use a well? or are off a city circuit? or is your baby immuno compromised?
6 kids and i’ve been fortunate to live where i’ve not had to sterilize the water. my docs always told me it was not necessary, though as a microbiologist and a nurse i know in most cases its not. amoebas are killed by the processing of city water, so are parasites bactreria and fungus

I find the formula doesn’t mix as well with the water when it’s cold. It’s kind of chunky (although it smooths out when the bottle is heated.) I always prepare all my bottles with formula and then refrigerate them. They’re good for up to 48 hours refrigerated, and my baby goes through the bottles I have within 24 hours. It’s very convenient to only have to make the bottles up once each day and then just grab one from the fridge when I need it! It also means I can get the bottle ready for him faster during the night. And water doesn’t go bad when left at room temperature, just make sure the container you keep the water in is airtight so dust and stuff can’t get in it. And if you keep the water in a container, do wash it when it’s empty. There will still be some minerals in the water that will cause a buildup. Trust me, I know that from experience – it starts to look kind of yellow.

Question–: Does powdered baby formula last only one month?
All powdered formulas say they’re good only one month from when you open the can. Why is this, is it true and what happens if you use it beyond one month?

Answer by joss.stone10
depends on how often you feed the baby
Answer by Silverwolf
If you only open one can at a time, then this shouldn’t be an issue. I assume that if you use it past the one month mark it either becomes stale, or more likely, loses some of the nutritional value.

I am not sure since the large cans only last us a week at best.
Answer by tinaw2006
Moisture makes it clumpy and gross. I use a can in a week, so I never really had this problem.

On vacation in Florida my daughter Gabriella has developed an intolerance to US baby formula. We arranged for some to be couriered from the UK but it has been detained in Memphis (I guess customs were interested in 2kg of white powder being delivered by FedEx) so she’s starting to get hungry….
