Question: Parents, is Green Day appropriate for a 13 year old?

I’m 13 and I enjoy listening to green day. Some lyrics are about drugs, sex, politics, and some contain profanity, more sparingly in some songs than others. I don’t know how my parents would react if they found out, so how would you react if you found out your child was listening to Green Day?

I’m not being “brainwashed” or anything, but parents sometimes think differently than their kids, so I just want to hear your opinion.

Well I am 13, and don’t really like them anymore. But when I was 9 and 10 i loved Green Day, and my parents were ok with it :)

I used to love Green Day until all their songs became political.

They aren’t that horrible…

I’ve been listening to them since I was that age. My parents never had a prob letting any of us listen to them. They dont swear at all really. Im now 23 and would let my daughter listen to them when shes older. Greenday is a lot better then say 50 Cent or anything like that.

Green Day is an awesome band. You have great taste at a young age. When I was 13 I listened to Green Day. That was 15 years ago-wow! I don’t think their lyrics are that bad. Yes they are mature lyrics but it’s not like some other trash out there. Maybe ask your parents to listen to the album and approve it for you. That way you can keep them informed of your interests. They’d love that I’m sure!

Greenday is a great band. And I hardly think it could do anyone any harm. Surely it’s better to listen to music that is actually thoughtful and talented, rather than something stupid and mindless that other girls that age would listen to (miley cyrus, pussycat dolls, etc).

The way you worded your question suggests you are quite mature for your age, so they really have nothing to worry about.

yap! thats ok.my brother loves greenday!

I started listening to them when I was 13 (28 now) and if my daughter was listening to them at 13 I would not have a problem with it. I tend not to blame the media for problems with kids. I blame it on parents who do not educate them on what they are seeing/hearing when they ask questions.

I’m 30, not a parent of a teen but I do have a preschooler. Honestly, I love Green Day but they came to be when I was in high school. I was never influenced by their music or any other music; I simply enjoyed the music and left it at that. There is a stigma that music and gaming influences young people to do bad things but I think it’s all relative to the child. Some kids are just typical kids who have good morals and ethics and some kids don’t have that because their parents haven’t made the point to teach their children those simple human traits. Ever since the shootings at Columbine things haven’t been the same and keep getting worse. There was a time in the 70’s and 80’s that people claimed that when playing records backwards or sped up they contained satanic messages…which was ridiculous. I think society always looks to the entertainment industry to justify people doing bad things when in all reality people do bad things because they have issues.

So, do I think Green Day is inappropriate for a 14 year old? No. It’s certainly music that your parents couldn’t enjoy but that doesn’t make it bad. My mom didn’t necessarily like Green Day but she knew I had a good head on my shoulders and music wouldn’t make me do “bad” things so she didn’t care unless I played it too loud. Parents need to look at their children and assess whether or not they are the kind of kid to be trusted or not…and not be too critical because teens are teens and do things that teens. If our son was always causing problems and being more of a pain than a typical teen, I might limit his freedoms but if he was just a typical teen I would let him be and keep my eyes open for anything worth worrying about.

  1. I’d be sorry my child had such poor taste in music. I’d hope mine are a lot less sheep-like and choose their music based on its quality rather than its trendiness.

  2. I think they’re fine. When I was fourteen I was listening to Sex Pistols, the Cure, Violent Femmes, etc. and it didn’t brainwash me. I knew the Cure’s Killing an Arab song was wrong, and I didn’t listen to it as much (though it was harder to skip on cassette tapes than on CDs, LOL) and I liked the more nice songs like Boys Don’t Cry and Charlotte Sometimes.

I knew what Blister in the Sun meant but I still love that song!

My kids are 12 and 15 and have been listening to Green Day for a couple of years. I have no objection.

  3. Armatage Shanks

    i got into green day when i was 13. now i’m 15.
my mom doesn’t like them, my dad doesn’t mind.
now here’s how i dealt with my parents about this:
    1. Dont sing the songs out loud- especially the ones about drugs, sex and crude words.
    2. dont even bother telling them when you buy a new album.
i started out with american idiot and half of me isn’t suprised if my mom still thinks that’s the only album i have (now i have 10 albums + merchendise and fanclubs).
    3. whatever you learn from green day, dont go repeating to your parents. i learned a bunch of stuff that i probably still wouldn’t know now (ei masturbation (lol), drugs, vocabulary, etc).

just enjoy the music, but be cautious. a few hours ago i was listening to Kerplunk and i had to keep the volume extremely low.

hope this helps you out a bit.this band is a great one so dont miss out!

  4. well i’m 19 and i listen to what i like, but even when i was 13 i could listen to what ever i wanted (as long as i didn’t sing the swear words(and i still don’t)) as long as my mum and dad knew what i was listening to, and most of the time they liked it to, and they still listen to green day with me!

  5. XOX_KISS_N_TELL_XOX

yes its appropriate your 13 your gunna learn about these things sooner or later!

  6. Zacky V's Sister

I am 13 and they are my all time favorite band. My parents are fine with them. They even like them.

  7. Kerplunk!Gunpowder

I got into them when I was 13 (last year). My parents think that I’m brainwashed (just because I listen to music other than pop now) and cuss more. But I’m not.

But I let them listen to GD’s songs. They liked some of the songs (”Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, “WMUWSE”) and finally accepted the fact that I have moved on to this type of music.

My dad still calls Billie “THE CRAZY MAN” though xD.

  8. greenpistols182

Green Day is my favourite band of all time, and I got into them about three years ago, when I was 12.

I think you’re worrying about your parents too much. Listen to Green Day if you want – if you actually tell your parents you listen to Green Day, it will show that YOU don’t think they’re appropriate, and they’ll pick up on that. However, if you do what I did and just bought the albums, and only played out loud the non-offensive songs (I have the whole discography on my iPod so I can listen to them whenever I want, lol) and don’t make a fuss about them in front of your parents, they generally don’t care. I’ve discovered literally hundreds of bands since Green Day, and my mum could probably only name about four that she knows I like.

Green Day is an absolutely amazing band, and their advice on almost every album is to not give a damn about what anyone else thinks, and do whatever you wanna do. You only have one life =]
