Question–: LGBT and open minded individuals: parenting tips?
My wife and I adopted a toddler boy 10 years ago and we have a 7 year old daughter. Our son is now 13 going on 14 and he is going through puberty. My father and my wife’s father are not in the picture, so i don’t know how to deal with this. It’s time he gets the birds and the bees talk but how do I go about this as he may feel we do not understand because we are women and are lesbians?

you dont have to they should do it in school
Answer by Jon
Just explain it to him. You know the facts of life and are perfectly capable of giving them to your son. Plan out what you want to say, and then be ready for questions if he has any. You can’t worry about whether or not he will feel you know what you are talking about, just because you are lesbian. In his mind, you are his parents, so he will listen to you. And on a lighter note, all kids pretend that their parents don’t know what they are talking about, so just because you are lesbian, won’t make you any different. Tell him, it needs to come from you, so you know he has received the right information. Don’t worry, you will be fine.

well when my big sister had to go away on “vacation” for a little while she left my 11 year old nephew in my parents care. my sister told me to give my nephew “the talk” and im lesbian and really not much older than him but we took school classes and i had my big talk with the rents early so i knew the necessary things to tell him i found it easy er to write it down before i said it. being lesbian doesn’t mean you dont understand it just means you can give more than one view on those life problems and sex itself..

You don’t have to give kids the “talk” now a days. They learn about it through word of mouth. If they ask anything, then I would answer.

Your son has heard a lot of things already, tell him you know this. Then go on to say that you want to be sure everything he has heard from other is proper, as some kids will say things just to sound like they know what’s going on.
Give him a basic run down on the reproductive system of both sexes, things like orgasms and of course masturbation, ask him if he has any questions or concerns and let him know that you are always available if any arise.
Please don’t leave it up to his school or God forbid, his friends.

i never got the talk, ever. And to be honest, I never felt like I needed it. All I WOULD have needed was for my mother or father to say that they know I am hearing about sex, and they know its uncomfortable to me, but if I were to ever have a question, fear, problem, or something I wanted to obtain (condoms, pills, tests), that I could turn to them and they wouldn’t punish me. That would have made my life growing up less stressful… especially when I turned 20 and realized my parents were very open about sex the entire time. Just speak up, even for a minute. The child may be like ew gross go away, but they’ll remember it and will feel safer knowing they can turn to you when things get tough or scary. Being lesbians makes no difference, as long as you acknowledge that its not a common situation adn that it can be difficult for him and her, and that you’re always there for support 100%.
