Today was our last day at Azimio School. We visited classrooms, sang songs and played games with the students at the school. After lunch we went to the Updendo Children’s Home to bring formula and newborn diapers for the babies, spend time playing on their playground with the toddlers and tour their facilities, marveling at how self-sufficient they are with a working farm and vegetable garden.

Q&A–: How can I run a smooth toddler classroom?
I am a toddler teacher for a daycare. My class is supposed to be 16 to 24 Months but I have 18 to 2 1/2 year olds. I have a total of 17 (yes, 17!!) kids, it is insane and I have no idea what to do. Right now I am just trying to get them through the day alive! I feel like I can’t teach them or do anything cool like art projects or anything. The directors “say” they are moving up 1 child and another child is leaving in February, so that will give us 15 by the end of February, but to me that is still a ton of kids! As soon as I try to sit down with a group of children someone is getting into trouble at the other side of the room. I have been told to try and split them into groups but it is hard as they can not stay in one spot for too long. Ugh, I don’t know if anyone has any tips or experienceI would really appreciate it!
I did forget to mention the ratio is 1:5 so we have 3 regular teachers and once we hit over 15 we get one more

What you need is an assistant. Children that young can’t supervise themselves. If there’s no money for an aide, then you could ask parents to volunteer at least for a couple of hours a week. If that doesn’t work, then maybe your school could work out a deal with a local high school or college and get some students who are interested in ECE. (Our high school has a volunteer program like that.
The kids get credit for a term of work experience.) That many little kids with only one teacher is not a safe situation, and I wouldn’t enroll my child at that school. You can’t be everywhere at once.
One thing you can do in the interim is have a video center where kids can sit and watch appropriate videos for awhile. The group idea is good, but each group needs an adult leader. You really need to speak to the directors about this because you could be legally responsible if a child gets hurt and that would be totally unfair.

What state are you in? That is not the right ratio for a class full of kids. In Texas this is the way it is supposed to be:
0-6mo. 1:4
6mo-12mo 1:5
1 yr.-18 mo. 1:9
2yrs 1:13
3 yrs. 1:15
4 yrs. 1:18
5 -6 yrs. 1:23
7-8yrs 1:26
9-12yrs also 1:26

Since you have 3 other teachers in the room you should try splitting them up into groups as much as possible. They will be less distracted with less kids running around and you can give each child better attention when you dont have to worry about 17 all together.

In general, 1 and 2 year olds are not supposed to be in a classroom together because of the developmental differences, but I’m sure this isn’t something you can change. 15 is a lot of toddlers to have, but the most important thing is structure. You need to have a set routine that you follow each and everyday. Start the day with quiet activities. Have something ready for the children than come in early to start the day off calmly. Use a timer with a loud sound to aid in transitions so that children know when it’s time to change activities. Provide learning centers that only allow for 2-3 children at a time. Offer sensory experiences, such as play-dough with a teacher supervising. You don’t need to be worrying about doing art projects or anything else until you have a routine that the children are used to and you can get through the day with a little amount of stress.
If you have 3 teachers in the room at a time, you should be able to do small group activities all day long.
