I found it necessary to reduce the waste volume and the number of worms inside of a bucket bin that I made a month or so ago. I also wanted to craft a small, portable container that I could use to demonstrate wormbin construction.
Here’s the solution. Two salad greens containers that I would’ve recycled anyway were turned into a mini-bin. I snipped three holes in the top inch of the fluted sections on the sides. I snipped a few more holes in similar sections on the bottom.
I lined the container with newspaper strips. I then added a three handfuls of worms and the mucky medium they’d been living in. A few more paper strips went on top.
I cut about 20 slits into the lid with a steak knife and sealed the container. The coffee cup section holds the first chamber above the second. This way, liquid can drip out of the bottom while air gets in from the sides.
Starting with only worms and paper, this kind of wormbin might be a good starting size for a single person.
I need to point out that this kind of bin definitely needs to be stored inside of a cabinet or under a sink. Worms don’t care for light.
