So I’m not too proud of my picture today but I was pretty much pressed for time…and resources…and ideas! eep!

I got up at 10:30 today (woke up at 9 thanks to my roomie but I went back to sleep after she left) and took my pictures right after my shower. I have a fairly large teddy bear collection and decided to feature my little guy in it. Of course it didn’t turn out like I had thought…partly because my camera doesn’t allow it, partly because my nails aren’t nice at ALL, and partly because I just didn’t have the time.

Then I proceeded to eat lunch at 12, do laundry with Patricia after, went to Walmart/Target/Best Buy/Office Max to find rewritable cds I need for voice that don’t exist…grrrr. Then we went to Melissa’s house and ate pizza while watching Toddlers and Tiaras and screaming at the TV and shaking our heads at how these parents are messing up their kids. It was one of those moments where you hate a TV show but you keep watching it :-P

I finally came back to find the internet working…WOOT!! :D waha so now I need to catch up on your guy’s pics :)

TRF: I just now realized it but Teja stocked up today…yay!! :D I try not to eat much of her food but she said I could have any of it…so sometimes I’ll munch on something. I eat it way more than she does since she’s hardly ever here…

I love my local farmer’s market, it’s fantastic. I enjoy chatting with the vendors and seeing all the things they grow. If I want endive or arugula I have to grow it myself or do without, none of the vendors at my local market carry the more exotic vegetables. If I want regular potatoes I can find them, fingerlings – not a chance. If I wanted anything but apples past September I was out of luck. I thought I hit the exotic vegetable jackpot this summer when I spotted one savoy cabbage.

Not so with the Local Roots Market. I spotted lots of arugula, endive, fingerling potatoes, bitter winter greens and lots of other interesting things. I mentioned yesterday that I was impressed with the variety of produce I spotted on Saturday. It was a hard choice deciding what to buy, but I finally settled on these things.

I scored: fingerling potatoes, stalks of brussels sprouts, celeriac, oyster mushrooms, fresh sage, cipollini & red onions, tri-colored baby carrots, bitter winter greens and some more all-natural hand spun wool yarn.

when i am at your house i feel better, i don’t miss her and i am just happy to be with you and your beautiful family. i don’t have to change anything and i don’t have to be anything different, i just get to relax and be me. i can’t be completely me very many places, but your place is one. your plants are beautiful, i visit you at work at the whole organic foods store you work at, i buy couscous and bok choy to cook for dinner, i’m feeling good and this is how it’s going to be, your pretty eyes and my brother calling me on the phone and being sweet, sending me a postcard or two and not really feeling lonely even when i’m alone, not today, and not tomorrow either.

!!Tips :At about six months, babies starts to eat real food. Rice cereal and mushy veggies turn to combinations of fish, meat, eggs, legumes, and vegetables—yep

Question–: Should I buy a food processor or a blender to make baby food for my six month old and why?
I am trying to get everything I need to start my baby on food, she is almost six months old, any advice would be greatly appreciated. My shopping list so far is as follows:

1. High Chair – any suggestions?
2. Either a food processor or a blender.
3. Steamer – any suggestions

New mom, so please share your expertise, I live in a small place and am running out of space. Thanks very much guys!

I used a hand blender to puree food. It worked great. I didn’t have to do it for very long though, before she was ready for stuff with more texture, so don’t buy anything too expensive, you won’t need it long.

I didn’t have a steamer, just boiled them until soft or nuked them.

At first, I fed her in her baby seat. Lots easier. When she was able to sit up a little better, I used a high chair.

Answer by Amanda
You absolutely should! My highchair is a Chicco … I LOVE THAT HIGHCHAIR it has a snap in tray that makes for super easy cleaning and folds up really slim it fits between my fridge and counter. I use a a hand held blender and make my own food, then put it into ice cube trays and then freeze it, once it is frozen I transfer to a plastic bag that is labeled. Then I take about 2 and put it in a take and toss bowl and let it warm up in warm water and there ya go!! You need a steamer because boiling food will make all the vitamins and nutrients leak out into the water and ultimately.. down the drain… I got a neat steamer from walmart that fits in any pan and it is sorta just a basket that unfolds… it was like 5 or 6 bucks and you just put water in the bottom of the pan… good luck and props to you for not choosing to give your baby food filled with preservatives! All of these are space savers!!

Well, I’m not a fan of pureeing stuff. I’ve always just mashed things with a fork – yes, even when I first start weaning. The way I look at it is, we didn’t have blenders 100 years ago. I personally feel that pureeing doesn’t prepare babies for what food is really like, ie, with texture. I’m not saying give them steaks to chew, but I don’t think that food needs to be liquidised. And I’ve never used baby rice. Far too bland. Honestly, my kids eat anything. My eldest was eating proper curries at 7 months! (Mashed of course!) You can get hand grinders. The more you grind, the finer the consistency of the food. They’re only a few pounds.
As for steaming thing, just put them in a jug with an inch of water and some cling film over the top and microwave them for a bit depending on what it is.

I have a Breville blender and it is excellent. I don’t use it for baby food, but here’s an article on doing so.

I wanted to give my new bento container a whirl… so this was a first go. Had some issues getting the lid on, had to re-accomodate for that (it’ll take some getting used to, but I think it will be awesome for longer wraps, sausages, and summer salads!)

[This is the bonus bento KateFord sent me with a package of stuff from Daiso. ]

Thanks, I actually had to cheat with the focus and create it with GIMP. my camera isn’t too hot with focus, especially when I’m not able to see how it looks before I snap the picture due to me being in front of the camera. But I guess it works all the same

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/lessapathymorecake] Sorry you had to let her go, but I’m excited to see you in Portland! Yay!!

  34. Ohh man I didn’t even know she was for adoption either! lol. but I’m glad you were able to find her a home so quickly and a great one at that!! and yaaay for BC!!

  35. that’s such a great bento! does the lid snap shut pretty tightly (as in, were there any leaks)??

  36. @janough: honestly, I don’t think the lid was spectacular (certainly not a tupperware type seal) but I carried it in my LaptopLunches insulated bag so the fit was snug all around, especially with an ice pack inside. Also nothing was spill worthy to have checked, and as long as I can handle it, I tend to keep my pack flat…

  37. stinky_harriet

That’s a great looking box. I like the large front section a lot. I love my Laptop, but sometimes those "large" containers just aren’t large enough.

  38. the front section is nice… However its depth is decieving, as the lid goes down there to compensate for the knife & fork… hence my taking only 3 pieces of apple, instead of 4 or 5.

for longer items, especially messy ones, it may out weigh the laptop at times!

  39. Miss Emily goes bananas

I like Trader Joe’s guacamole, but I prefer my own. I challenge anyone to make better guacamole than mine,

    Now I want Doritos. Thanks.

  40. Looks great. FYI, this isn’t from Daiso, but just from a regular Dollar Store in NorCal. I have tons of ‘em! Planned to give them away. I made a lunch in one here, awhile back…

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/kateford/297519808/in/set-721575943...

You’re right, not a really tight fitting lid, but I found a big elastic hairband works terrific as a Bento Band!

  41. @Kate: too funny… I saw (and obviously commented on) that pic long ago… and in the back of my mind I’ve always thought I’d have this around for random moments/chances to bless someone with a lunch and keep the box opportunity! (must be your lovely influence!)

  42. MMMmm looks tatsty.
