Five basic emotions
ask a toddler

Being able to draw human emotions on your characters seems to me an essential skill to have as a cartoonist. However, recognizing an emotion is not the same as being able to reproduce an image of emotions at will.

There are books to help you, though, and Flickr as reference material. Especially toddlers are perfectly capable expressing all five human emotions in their raw, pure forms, and do so on a regular basis. Ask any parent of a toddler to confirm.

It’s from the teenage years and on when humans start trying to conceal their most deeply felt emotions, and refine their facial expressions to communicate thought and intent, instead of just inner feelings. It is this mixture of exposing inner feeling and communicating conscious thought which confuses artists. Is this person trying to say something with a particular facial expression, or is it unfiltered emotion? Even the person emoting often doesn’t know, or realize. It’s one of those idiosyncrasies we are only able to decipher when we know someone better, and can tell if he or she is "faking" an emotion (the emotion is real, but consciously put out of context, for effect, hence the quotation marks).

Yes, drawing emotions can be a complicated matter if you want to portray a three-dimensional character readers can relate to.

After all, you don’t want your cartoon characters all look like toddlers, do you?

Q&A–: Is it normal for a toddler to ask this kind of question…?
I was changing my 2 year old’s soiled diaper and she asked “eat it?”, and then she shook her head no… So, I’m glad she understands that she cannot eat poo, but… why did she even ask? I’m a bit confused by this. I know toddlers ask a lot of questions, but I never expected this one.

The answer in the following: (Hint: The correct answer provided by the users, does not guarantee the right.)

Answer by lora
It’s just one of those things! Be happy that she didn’t smear it all over her crib and self like my oldest did at that age!

Answer by kevinloomis
They are just trying to understand the world around them, and the relations to everything. Everything the explore goes in their mouth, so she is probably learning how everything relates to other things around her.

Answer by ive
as you said toddlers tend to ask weird but innocent questions
i would not worry about that since you said she understands thats she should not eat it.
maybe she thought that the poop was something she originally ate and it was a question that came to her mind.

Answer by wordwitty
it’s normal for toddlers to be fascinated by their own poo, don’t worry! It is something that they have created and very normal. A lot of parents will also have experienced something similar when toddlers are potty training. Very often they will want to pick it up, eat it … one unattended baby i heard of got artistic with it over the bathroom wall…yeuch!

Answer by Socrates Johnson
Obviously your child is an idiot. Of course you can’t eat poo! I suggest you get her checked out for brain damage, the sooner you catch it the better.

Answer by Lee
Have you hade her checked for severe severe autism?

Answer by Bill J
she may be Malaysian, as it is considered a delicacy to their culture.

AUTISM FTW!!!

Yes, aren’t they cute?!

Answer by sevenofus
It’s a perfectly normal toddler question. I have been a mom for 29 years to 4 kids plus I have provided child care in my home for 21 years. Probably 1/2 the kids I have cared for have come up with that question at some point in time. Right now I have a 2 1/2 year old little boy who is urine potty trained pretty well, but we are working on bowel movements now. Just 2 days ago we were changing a messy diaper, talking openly about how soon he’ll be able to put poopy in the potty instead of in his diaper. As I was preparing to dispose of the diaper, he asked me the very same question, “Eat it?” Then did the very same thing, answered his own question by shaking his head saying, “No, don’t eat it.” I just acknowledged it by saying, “That’s right, Trevor, poppy is not for eating. It goes in the potty.” It’s just part of the fact finding mission of discovering how things work in the world. Nothing to worry about, it’s normal. Actually, I’ve had a few who did try to eat it and I imagine more than one has managed to get some in their mouth. No need to make a big scene. I just told them it was yucky, no good to eat then we went and washed hands and mouth pretty good. Toddlers are curious creatures to be sure. ADDED: I hope you don’t pay attention to some of these answers. There is nothing wrong with your daughter, she is a normal, curious toddler.

Charlie / Sjakie / Derrick

My first attempt at crocheting a doll without a pattern. My son ignores him :-) and I should definitely refine my skills here… still, he was fun to make.

When I asked my 15-month-old toddler how he would like to name this doll, he said something that sounded like "Cha"… so Charlie (or, in Dutch, Sjakie) it will be… although my BF remarked that the doll looks very much like Sepultura’s lead singer, Derrick Green… hehe.
