Question–: How long did it take your newborn to get on a sleep/feeding schedule?

Come on people… obviously a brand newborn does not have a schedule.

My baby is 4 weeks old… he consistently has a 4:00 am feeding but the rest is still sporadic. He is setting his own schedule. Just asking how long it took for your baby to work themselves in to a schedule nothing about “forcing” him to do anything.

Newborn + schedule = no

Answer by Jessi (due Nov. 18, 2008)
I’m wondering the same thing. I’m not even really close to my due date, but I just want to be prepared.

Someone told me about a book she read about helping your baby establish a routine; she said it worked wonders for her.. Hopefully someone mentions it so we can get the name. :)

With both of my children it took me 6 weeks. But just remember that once you get them on a schedule sometimes you have to be flexible for them as they grow and change. My daughter scheduled beautifully. My son did at first but now that he is 3 months old I have had to alter his feeding schedule a bit. Good luck.

Answer by k b
My daughter was sleeping through the nights when she get out of nicu 9 weeks after she was born..then she continued on a schedule up until a few days ago..where she eats less and sleeps maybe 2 hours a night..hopefully she comes out of this soon.

Newborns and schedules??? your kidding right?

Answer by Pippin
Well… lets see. She’s 16. She’s still not on a ’schedule’. (Beyond what she needs for school.)

Jessie: The ‘book’ you are talking about is probably either “Babywise” or “The Babywhisperer”. Neither one is recommended by people who KNOW anything about the needs of babies. The books are written for parents who feel that their own need for a schedule outweighs a baby’s need for food, love, and attention. (Babywhisperer is SLIGHTLY less rigid than Babywise.)

If you want/need a rough schedule, just work with your baby to establish one that works for both both of you — and is flexible enough to change when it no longer works.

Answer by proudmum.2boys
its wrong to try and force a newborn into a schedule. We are supposed to work around their lives, not the other way around. Babies do not make their own schedules for sleep and food until roughly 6mths old.

Answer by Ashley
it took my first child about 2 weeks to sleep when i did, but with my 2nd, like a week.

Answer by Robin R
its never a set schedule with a new born but they should adjust after being home for a week or so. and as the weeks go by it will get better and easier, and you will get more sleep. my daughter is 4 months now and she got a schedule after a few days of being home and now only wakes up once if even that during the night no matter how much she naps during the day

Answer by yeeharrrrr
Took me nine months and I still struggle some days…dont worry so much about getting into a schedule when they are just wee little things try to just go with the flow a little bit…I did and my son started sleeping through the night from 7-6 at nine months.

Feed it when it is hungry put it in bed when it is tired.

Answer by winkster520
When my son was 2 weeks old, there was no schedule. It wsa feed on demand at all hours. He also slept whenever he wanted. Although I did try to keep him up during the day more so he would sleep at night. That didnt quite work because he still needed to eat at night and got up all the time.

Answer by nwside_houston
At 2 weeks old, I wouldn’t worry so much about a “schedule”…BUT, I would make sure that you feed him every 2-3 hours during the day, then at night don’t wake him up for a feeding, just feed him when he wakes up! As far as sleeping/napping is concerned..at that age, just let him sleep when he’s tired! Trust me, I was all about a schedule and tried with mine, but they change so much throughout the weeks that once you get a schedule worked out, it will change…just do what’s best for your little man! Make him happy!

My son is now almost 4 months old and sleeps through the night – so doing what your baby needs will not hurt anything! :) He also naps during the day whenever he’s tired! I think I’ll start thinking “schedule” again around 6 months, but this is working for us all so far!! :)

Enjoy your little one!

my daughter was on her own set schedule…feeding every 2 hours for the first month or so, then it gradually went to 2 1/2 hours. she also slept a LOT until she was a couple months old because that’s what infants do. her waking hours started to lengthen around 10 weeks. it wasn’t until about 4 or 5 months ago when i was able to finally get my daughter on a definite nap and eating schedule. i’m sure i could’ve started earlier, but there were outside factors that prevented us from getting it together. from my experience, 2 week olds are hardly ready for someone else to tell them when to eat and when to sleep. HE will tell you when he’s hungry, HE will tell you when he’s tired, at this point.

Answer by Pippin
You don’t.

2 week old newborns can’t read clocks, and have no idea what time it is. They are hungry and tired at irregular (but VERY frequent) intervals, and would have no way of understanding why they are being made to wait to eat if hungry, or forced to eat if NOT hungry.

Listen to your baby. Feed him when he’s hungry and let him sleep when he’s tired.

Over the next few months he’ll probably settle into a rough pattern of his own, which you can then tweak a bit to meet your own needs, if you find it necessary to do so. (Though you’ll still need to recognize that his needs and patterns will change as he continues to grow, so what works at 4 month may not work at 5 or 8 months.)

You cant put a 2 week old on a schedule. The first couple months its how they want it. They make it. My son got on his own schedule at 3 months.

Answer by Nicole
2 weeks is too young you wont have a schedule for a while just feed when hungry and sleep when tired around 2 to 3 months they naturally start waning to sleep more at night and less during the day. i know its hard right now but you just have to sit back and go with it for now it will get better mama i promise!

Answer by Jillian
your baby will most liekly make a scheddule of her own- you should not put a baby ona feeding schedule especially a breastfed baby

Answer by Jeremy R
You can’t. At this age, they make their own schedule which usually isn’t much of one at all. Usually 2-3 months is when you can try to put them on a schedule that fits you.

Answer by littlemomma711
I read On Becoming Baby Wise, and at 4 weeks old, we tried it. It changed our lives and helped me be able to function and helped our baby tremendously. Our baby needs a lot of sleep or else she is a cranky kid. Half the people like this book and half the people don’t. It depends on whether or not you agree with letting your child cry it out, although 2 weeks might be a bit too soon.

Good luck!

About newborn feeding schedule,In the blog: ask a toddler and Newborn Baby Clothes.
!!Tips :D on’t let your own anxiety affect your baby’s growing need for independence

Hes very tall and very cute and brand new. Early Friday morning, January 30 the Houston Zoo welcomed the birth of a bouncing baby boy Masai giraffe. He was born around 6:30 am and by 7:50 am he was standing on his own, said Houston Zoo Supervisor Laurie McGivern. Hes 69 and a half inches tall and weighs 110 pounds. Hes has all the appearances of a strong and healthy boy, said McGivern. The as yet unnamed baby is being hand reared by Houston Zoo giraffe keepers. Noel is a gentle, attentive and good mother but doesnt make enough milk to nurse and raise her calves, said McGivern. So, the keeper staff will bottle feed the calf for at least six months, added McGivern. His primary keepers have a 24 hour watch and feeding schedule in place to ensure he gets the best care and attention. Initially the calfs diet will consist of bovine colostrum mixed with goats milk. But in a day or so we will switch to goats milk mixed with a little bit of water, said McGivern. Noels newborn will be on view at the Houston Zoo giraffe exhibit. When the calf is in his barn stall Zoo guests can view him through the stall window at the rear of the giraffe exhibit, said McGivern. The staff will also be presenting Meet the Keeper Talks with the baby at various times during the day, added McGivern. Presentation times will vary. Zoo guests are encouraged to visit the Zoos Web site at www.houstonzoo.org for the Meet the Keeper Talk schedules at the giraffe exhibit.

  1. well my daughter has been sleeping all night since the day she was born, so thats not a problem then its just diaper before every bottle and bottle every two hours (or if you are going to breastfeed im not sure if its still every two hours).

  2. I noticed at 2 months she started to regulate her schedule…she did it all on her own too…her father and I did not force a schedule on her.

  3. My baby is 2.5 months old. as for a sleep schedule, we are just starting to sleep in blocks and i can kinda see a pattern emerging but… it varies from baby to baby and their personality really i think. She still has good night where she will sleep about 5 hrs at a time and then the other nights she’s up every few hrs or so. Feeding just started getting better as well now, shell eat around 4oz every 3 to4 hours now, sometimes she’ll need a snack in between. Before now she was very inconsistent and you just have to feed at demand. Good luck with your babe and try not to force a schedule, it never works, they make your schedule unfortunately

I worked with my daughter and got her on a schedule. I had a mid wife come to my house once a week after I had her for the first four months, just to give me advice because it was my first child. My daughter was sleeping 12 hours at night by the time she was 2 months. I also did the same things with her, like when it was time to eat, I put her in her swing while I made the bottle, so she would watch me walk to the kitchen and make her bottle, then she would know everytime I put her in the swing it was time to eat. Also before she woudl go to bed at night, I would give her a bath and do Infant message on her (a trick I learned from my mid wife), she would fall asleep while I was doing it and sleep 12 hours. They are never too young to start getting them on a schedule. Good luck!

  5. I HAVE TWO CHILDREN AGED 2 AND 5.MY FIRST WAS SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT AT 8 WEEKS OLD.I HAD A ROUTINE OF HER GOING TO BED AT 20.00PM AND SHE WOKE AT 08.00AM THE FOLLOWING MORNING.HER FEEDING WAS FOUR HOURLY SINCE SHE WAS BORN,HER LAST FEED AT 20.00PM.BY 4 MONTHS OLD SHE WAS SLEEPING IN HER OWN ROOM AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM THANK GOD.MY SECOND CHILD WAS FEEDING TWO HOURLY,SHE WAS A VERY HUNGRY BABY,SHE WAS SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT BY TWELVE WEEKS,AGAIN FOR THE SAME TIME AS MY FIRST CHILD.DURING THOSE WEEKS IF MY CHILDREN WOKE DURING THE NIGHT I WOULD GIVE THEM COOLED BOILED WATER AND NEVER A FEED.AS A NURSE ONCE SAID TO ME WOULDNT WE ALL WAKE UP DURING THE NIGHT IF THERE WAS A TEDDY BEARS PICNIC GOING ON.IT WORKED FOR ME AND I THINK I WAS LUCKY,MY TWO CHILDREN ARE STILL IN THE SAME ROUTINE FOR BEDTIME,EVERY BABY IS DIFFERENT AND YOU WILL KNOW WHAT TO DO.

  6. No Longer Dizzy

Ask me when my two are older ……. they’re just 10 years and 13 years.

  7. My baby just got into her own routine instinctually. it happened a week or so after she was born. i never created a “schedule” for her — i just paid attention to her cues, wrote down when she ate and slept, and soon I could see patterns emerge. She always ate every two hours on the dot. As a newborn she usually had 30-45 minutes of awake time and then fell asleep again. As she got older, her appetite got larger and she would eat every two and a half hours, and then, later, every three hours. Sometimes, she would do things differently and when this happened, we just went with the flow. I always stayed flexible and followed her lead.

EDIT — she didn’t have a sleep schedule until she was 3 1/2 months when i began a nighttime routine. Next time around I will begin a nighttime routine earlier because it definitely helped with putting her to bed.
