Q&A: newborn baby clothes size?

buying clothes for an unborn baby. i’m not sure of his weight or size. should i buy the 0-3 months baby clothes? what if its a big baby, will 0-3 months clothes still fit him? or should i buy the 3-6 months sizes? how many should I get?

since babies outgrow their clothes in weeks, what is the average amount to spent on baby clothes.

what other clothing do babies need the most besides ‘onesies’?

sockies!!!!! for brand new baby… most of them start in premie stuff at least the first week and then move to 0-3 month stuff after that.

the 0-3 should fit, especially after washing, they all seem to shrink. My son was 7′13 at birth, he wore newborn for about 2 weeks and then went onto the 0-3 sizes. Are you having a baby shower or have a lot of family and friends? People love to buy baby clothes… especially in small sizes like that. I won’t have to buy clothes until my baby is a year old! If you are in a colder climate, I like the pajamas that are one piece with feet in them. 3-6 months is a good size to buy for a baby. I would buy like 5 or so.

even if you have a big baby 0-3 should still fit 0-3 lased quite long for my baby the 3-6 didnt last long though hes on 6-9 sleepsuits already and hes only 4 month all his other 3-6 clothes fit him i would advise after his/her dont buy many 3-6 coz they dont last very long s they shrink in the wash. any other clothes vests t-shirts and trousers stick to babys age

well, from my experience, my son weighed 6.8oz when he was born. i had to buy preemie clothes for him since he was so tiny. he wasnt premature either. my suggestion would be to buy a couple preemie clothes and more newborn clothes. what i do so my son can wear his clothes more and longer is i put him in clothes that are one size up. where its just a little big on him. but newborns need and love to feel embraced since they just came out that small sac. from my experience from my son, he loves the 1 piece outfits that look like pajamas so i bought a lot of those ones. but it all depends on how much money you can spend on clothes. when i was pregnant, i bought all the way up to 1 year old clothes. it just depends on what you prefer and how much your willing to spend.
hope this helps.
congratulations!

From experience, if you want to buy cute clothes for a baby buy it in 3-6mo, because in the first 3 months the baby basically lives in onesies. Plus at that stage they grow really, really fast. My baby was 9lbs when he was born so none of the newborn stuff fit him which sucked. At 3 months that’s when I started dressing him up and taking him out. They outgrow all clothes fast so I say most outfits the baby wears an average of 4-5times before they grow out of the until they turn 1. Then they get a lot more use out of them. I say if you are buying it something, i say get i really cute outfit, and a pack of bibs, you can never have enough of those. Trust me. Well happy baby clothes shopping.

I bought a few items in the 0-3 month range and focused more of my attention on 3-6 month clothing knowing that even if my daughter did fit in the 0-3 month clothing- it would not be for long. The 3-6 month clothing was a little big but she grew into it very quickly!

I bought a lot (almost all I would say) of my babies clothes on EBay. I received a lot of nice, name brand items for a fraction of the cost that it would have been to go out and buy them in a store. Also- towards the end of my pregnancy I was in no humor to be out shopping. It was nice to have everything come right to the house.

A lot of onesies, sleep-sacks and one-piece outfits is what my baby lived in.

Good Luck!

First of all congrats on your new baby!
Buy both the 0-6 month, and the 3-6 months clothes. Stock up as much as you possibly can because babies tend to be very messy even at this age and they grow so fast. As far as cost, it will depend on where you shop. Wal-mart will probably be the cheapest for new clothes. Personally I buy huge lots of clothes from ebay, very, very cheap!
As you said buy lots of onesies, sleepers, socks, newborn hats(although you’ll get one from the hospital), and one piece gowns. This is what babies are most comfy in unless you go out once in a while and then you can put him in a regular outfit. Don’t spend tons of many on these because they won’t get worn much. Good luck and congrats!

The sizes are according to weight. On average, preemie size is under 6 lbs, Newborn is up to 8lbs, and 0-3 is up to 12 lbs. Most babies never wear preemie size, and a lot can’t wear newborn. I would start out with 0-3 size. They usually only really need a few items in each size, but I liked to play dress up with them so I had plenty. Babies need sleepers, onesies, socks, and gowns. When my babies were first born, I liked one piece outfits with feet in them the best and gowns for them to sleep in. I would also buy a few blankets, bibs, burp clothes, and clothe diapers to use as burp clothes.

I would buy about very few 0-3 mos clothes. They’ll mostly be wearing the onesies and little shirts. Buy alot of 3-6 months, that should cover if the baby’s big and if not then you’ll have plenty for when they grow into them.
Socks
Shirts
Hats
Mittens in case they try to scratch their face
LOTS of diapers (keep the reciept in case the baby is too big for them, you can return them and get the next size up)

Neither of my kids wore newborn size, 0-3 month was the smallest they wore. My son was 8lbs 14oz and wore 0-3 for 5 weeks, my daughter was 7lbs 13oz and wore 0-3 for 3 months. I’d suggest 0-3 month size. I’d suggest that you get a couple more outfits than how often you are willing to do laundry. If you’ll do laundry every 3 days then get about 5-6 outfits, that will give you a bit of leeway if you need to change during the day. Besides onesies you’ll need sleepers, outfits, hats, and socks to get you started. I’d also suggest a car seat cover like this one http://www.amazon.com/Kiddopotamus-CozyUp-Carrier-Cover-Ivory/dp/B000DZUCDC/ref=sr_1_48?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1201131861&sr=8-48 because you can’t put bulky clothes on the baby and still have them be safe in the car seat.

  1. I am pregnant also and have thought of having the same dilemma. I don’t want to buy things that are too small for the baby, but yet I want to have a good start on buying things so I don’t have to worry about having the money for it after the baby gets here. One suggestion I like is to look on Ebay. I’ve heard that you can get really good deals on virtually new baby clothes at just a fraction of the regular cost. Plus, it comes to your house! What could beat that? And, if you’re not paying as much for it, it won’t hurt the purse as much if the baby doesn’t fit in it or if he outgrows it too quickly.

As for a diaper suggestion….I would get a gift card or something at walmart and fill it up as much as possible before the baby gets here. That way, you don’t risk having stocked up on too many diapers that the baby won’t fit in.

    Good luck!
