My Daughter Technically Is Ready To Start Baby Foods, However Ive Choosen Not To, But Is It Ok If Every Now..?

15 January 2010

and again i let her have just a spoonful of the same type of baby food? (im not switching types due to the fact of not being able to find the allergen if she were to have one.) But she strictly breast feeds but i want to just let her taste baby food every now and again.. is that ok or should i just wait all together?

Q & A   Questions & Answer  Q & A

A:

If you’re concerned about allergens, you can introduce one new food every week or two and see what happens. That is a good way to isolate what, if anything, might be causing a sensitivity. Chances are she’ll be just fine. Just keep her away from berries (Gerber markets a strawberry/something or other baby food and I don’t get that at all, since strawberries are an allergen). I delayed starting solids for about a month or two with my daughter because she had a milk protein allergy from 8 weeks to about 9-10 months old and I just wanted to be sure. She’s totally fine now and eats everything!

A:

Solids are solids whether it’s everyday or once a week. It’s fine but giving the same food for a long period can also cause a sensitivity to it.

A:

If she is 6 months old then you should start weaning her onto solid food, she has teeth coming through for a reason, to chew food. She will probably love solid food, all sorts of different foods, sweet or savour.
Make your own if you are worried about allergies? Why would she have an allergy. It seems the whole world has an “allergy” these days. Babies love mashed foods, rusks, banana, stewed apples, mashed potato/carrot/parsnips with a little meat/gravy mixed in. Whatever you eat, leave salt out and give her a small portion pureed so its soft.
If you start off making food a “trauma” it will be a trauma for years to come.

A:

how old is your baby? if she is at least six months old and is showing signs of readiness then you could offer baby foods every day for a feeding, and then too, and then all three. try the same food for 3-4 days and the first time start it between the morning and noon so that you have the rest of the day to watch for any adverse reactions. if your baby is less than six months, i suggest waiting. my baby is 5 months and i tried with a little bit of cereal but he still has the tongue thrust reflex, so i haven’t offered it any more and i’m planning on waiting until he is at least 6 months.

A:

You’re much better off switching types. The danger of your baby ending up refusing to eat a healthy variety of foods is far greater than the danger of her having an allergy and you being unable to figure out what she’s allergic to.
What do you mean “technically ready”, in any case? Is she six months old? If not, then wait.
