Question–: Question for mommies that make their own baby food?
I just started attempting to make baby food for my 6 (almost 7) month old son. My first try was green beans – I steamed them for my own dinner and decided to throw a few in the food processor for my son. It came out too chunky and I could not get it to puree any further, I’m thinking I didn’t put enough in there or is this how it’s suppose to be? I did add water, but it didn’t help too much. Any tips/advice?

Well, if you are aiming for purees, then steam longer, until they are very tender.

Did you offer her the green beans to try? My son never did complete purees, he actually liked chewing his food more.

Also, is your blender not quite up to par? I know it can be hard to completely puree somethings in a blender. A food processor or food mill may work better.

have you considered making batches? i did and put them and into ice cube trays with a little water so it was easier to pop out straight from the freezer:). also i thought using a hand blender was better to puree small amount amounts if that helps:)

Q&A–: How do I make my own baby food?
I get the just of how to make my own baby food. Just boil and blend. I would like to know if anyone tried this before. What should I stay away from? I also have a juicer and I was wondering if it was ok to use the left over “pulp” to make baby food? Does juicing something take out most of the nutrients?

I make my daughter’s baby food. It’s so easy to do and it’s so much better for her! All you do is steam the vegetables or fruit (steaming is better than boiling) and then puree it. Then, you can scoop the baby food into ice cube trays (each little slot holds about an ounce of baby food) and freeze it so that you always have extras on hand. the juice is going to be where most of the nutrients are, the guts are where the fiber will be. making this type of food is really easy. you are really just taking something and changing its texture. you want to avoid adding too much liquid. that could really make it hard for you. add the liquid slowly so that you can determine the best thickness.

i used a babyfood grinder.And loved it!!!!!i would give egg yolks,bananas,all sorts of different food that are age appropriate ofcourse.No egg whites for 1 year no honey for 1 year just do your research on your foods and get going girly!And just think it will all be fresh prepared by you no additives..you go girl

I make my son’s food. Now that’s he’s had the real stuff he won’t eat the jar baby food. I got the So Easy Baby Food Kit. It’s the book and a food chart and 2 ice cube trays with lids. It tells you what age you should start what foods. It tells you how to buy and prepare each fruit and veggie and how to cook it. I really like it! It takes a little extra time to do, but it tastes so much better and you know exactly what’s going in your baby’s body. Have Fun!

This is how I make food for my baby.

Make myself a meal. Take some of the fruit, veg, or meat in large easy to handle pieces and give to baby.

There is no need to cut food into mouth-sized pieces. Indeed, this will make it difficult for a young baby to handle. A good guide to the size and shape needed is the size of the baby’s fist, with one important extra factor to bear in mind: Young babies cannot open their fist on purpose to release things. This means that they do best with food that is chip-shaped or has a built-in ‘handle’ (like the stalk of a piece of broccoli). They can then chew the bit that is sticking out of their fist and drop the rest later – usually while reaching for the next interesting-looking piece. As their skills improve, less food will be dropped.

Many parents worry about babies choking. However, there is good reason to believe that babies are at less risk of choking if they are in control of what goes into their mouth than if they are spoon fed. This is because babies are not capable of intentionally moving food to the back of their throats until after they have developed the ability to chew. And they do not develop the ability to chew until after they have developed the ability to reach out and grab things. The ability to pick up very small things develops later still. Thus, a very young baby cannot easily put himself at risk because he cannot get small pieces of food into his mouth. Spoon feeding, by contrast, encourages the baby to suck the food straight to the back of his mouth, potentially making choking more likely.

It appears that a baby’s general development keeps pace with the development of his ability to manage food in his mouth, and to digest it. A baby who is struggling to get food into his mouth is probably not quite ready to eat it. It is important to resist the temptation to ‘help’ the baby in these circumstances since his own developmental abilities are what ensure that the transition to solid foods takes place at the right pace for him, while keeping the risk of choking to a minimum.

She said children should be fed only with breast or formula milk for six months, then weaned onto solids to improve control over how much they ate.

This could prevent babies becoming picky about food.

Mrs Rapley has spent 25 years as a health visitor, and she said: “I found so many parents were coming to me with the same problems – ‘my child is constipated, my child is really picky’ – and they couldn’t get them on to second stage baby food.”

After six months, Mrs Rapley said babies were capable of taking food into their mouths and chewing it.

Therefore, feeding them pureed food at this time could delay the development of chewing skills.

Instead, she said, they should be given milk and solid pieces of food which they could chew.

Mrs Rapley argued that babies fed pureed food had little control over how much food they ate, thus rendering them vulnerable to constipation, and running a risk that they would react by becoming fussy eaters later in life.

She blamed the food industry for convincing parents that they should give children pureed food.

She said: “Sound scientific research and government advice now agree that there is no longer any window of a baby’s development in which they need something more than milk and less than solids.”
