I have worked in computers for over 20 years. I will quote what my dad used to say.

The difference in an amateur and a pro is the pro can make his mistakes look like it was meant to be that way.

No one knows everything and you always encounter something new. Technology changes constantly. What keeps you literate is the ability to think through the problems. If understand the basics of how they work, no matter how sophisticated they get, you will always know how to read the symptoms.

I would say it is the same as it is with reading and writing. If you read at the 6th grade level and are an adult, then you are as literate as you need. So, if you can check email, and type with or without a spell checker, then you are literate. You do not have to know more than that. If you do, you are SMART.

imho, it’s the ability to relate to most hi-tech comp conversation without scratching one’s head or other private parts to show uneasiness.
also the ability to embrace, accept, and welcome the latest technology fresh out of the oven.
don’t start a conversation with “when i was young things were so much simpler…”.
accept technology as a way of life and recognize it as modern day life’s modus operandi.
learn to use as many devices, gadgets, programs, softwares, hardwares… etc as possible.
don’t hold back on technology.
show no fear in anything Silicon Valley, Redmond (Washington), Apple, developers… throw at us. learn them all and try to, if not master, comprehend and navigate the newest products on the market.
to make a long story short, accept that this is a computer dependant world and just embrace it.
amen. hallelujah. go in peace and leave a few bucks in the basket on your way out.

I completed high school and some college, but did not grow up w/computers. When i finally got a computer, i almost felt like i was in the first grade again. I have learned most of the computer basics, so am computer literate in that sense. So i guess i must be in maybe the eighth grade now, computerwise.

Question–: budget cuts in california schools?
Nearly all 600 students at Carl Harvey Elementary School arrive for class for the first time speaking Spanish, not English, which is why the school’s three-hour after-school literacy classes have been so critical.

But with substantial budget cuts coming from the state and the local district, and the prospects of federal help uncertain, Harvey Elementary’s principal has already projected that after-school enrollment will have to be cut in half, if not more, by next fall.

”There was a window of opportunity here,” the principal, Christine J. Anderson, said of the classes, which the school has given for the last two years, ”and that is closing.”
In California, which was already experiencing a costly electrical power shortage before the economy turned downward, Gov. Gray Davis on Nov. 14 announced plans to delay support for poorly performing schools, cut assistance for novice teachers and reduce after-school programs like those here in Santa Ana, which is among the poorest districts in the nation. Those cuts are expected to exceed 0 million

So what’s your question? Will the programs continue or be eliminated? They should never have been funded to begin with as this problem could have been have eliminated at the boarder. If the parents of these students are here illegally which is probably the case, then they are responsible for their children to learn English. I don’t want my tax dollars paying for their lack of personal responsibility. Maybe you can get the federal government to ship them back to Mexico or have the Mexican Government pay for their education from their oil money. Stop the stupid liberal bleeding heart attitude that it is our responsibility to educate Mexicans or anyone who will not take responsibility for their own behavior.

1. So what is the question?

2. When are you talking about? Gray Davis hasn’t been governor of California since 2003. Since then it has been Arnold Schwarzenegger

3. California schools have been going downhill since the days of Gov. Ronald Reagan starting in the late ’60s.

When Reagan came in, California schools were among the top in the nation. Now they are among the bottom – almost entirely because of funding cuts.

so this is nothing new.

In the past, California has survived because of the large number of well-educated immigrants – some from overseas, some from other states. But immigration has been dropping off, so the future looks grim.

Support Georgia School Libraries: Say NO to HB 278

If you believe in the value of school libraries in Georgia you need to Take
Action Now! capwiz.com/ala/ga/home/

Georgia House Bill 278, now being reviewed by the Senate Education and Youth
Committee, will decimate funding for school libraries and media centers
across Georgia by rolling dedicated funding for school libraries into
general operating budgets of school systems.

Georgia House Bill 278 is summarized as follows: "[T]o be entitled an Act to
amend Article 6 of Chapter 2 of Title 20 of the Official Code of Georgia
Annotated, relating to the "Quality Basic Education Act," so as to
temporarily waive certain expenditure controls relating to funds earned for
direct instructional costs, media center costs, staff and professional
development costs, and additional days of instruction; to provide for
automatic repeal; to provide for related matters; to repeal conflicting
laws; and for other purposes."

What this means for Georgia school libraries:

– This dedicated funding has already dropped from .54 in 2003 per
student FTE to FTE for elementary and for middle and high schools.
– These dedicated funds have already been diverted in many cases and will
disappear entirely if HB 278 passes, leaving school libraries with no
budgets.
– Library orders have already been cancelled in mid-process as systems
take back dedicated funds already delivered since HB 278 has language making
it retroactive to July 2008.
– Kids who read and learn 21st century literacy skills succeed. School
libraries make it happen.
– Studies from across the country show that funded and staffed school
libraries improve students test scores.

Please contact your Senator immediately to urge the defeat of this bill!

We hope you will be able to take a few minutes to respond, and to forward
this alert to your friends, to have them let their representatives know the
value of school libraries.

Thanks for being receptive to receiving these messages, and for your help!
