most doctors would tell you yes it is, but I am a grandmother who had three children of my own and I listened to the advice of my grandmother who said to feed my children a little cereal from birth ( a little meaning about a tablespoon or two at that young age) to help them sleep through the night…..my 2 oldest slept through the night from birth….i believe due to this. but i did have a son later on born with a very low birth weight and he was not able to handle the cereal (it made him spit up a lot) and I had to wait until he was a month old……and he didn’t sleep through the night until then. My grandmother told me to introduce vegetables at 1 month of age, the non gassy ones first…like carrots. Then to introduce fruit 1 month later. My children grew up happy and healthy and not really fat like some babies today whose mothers give them nothing but formula which is loaded with fat. My grandchild’s mother didn’t want to take my advice, she wanted to listen to her doctor instead (which I don’t hold against her) but my granddaughter is now 9 months old and still doesn’t sleep through the night and is quite fat from having so many bottles of formula a day. Some times the “old grandmothers do know best” I know I thank God I listened to mine since I had happy and healthy babies due to it.
Breastmilk ONLY until six month of age!
Don’t rush your child!
Go for it!
My son is 4 months old and hes on baby food. I feed him baby food once a day with 2 ounces of formula mixed together. My 3 month old Nephew was put on baby food as well by his doctor. Your best bet is to talk to your Doctor.
No please. Breastfeed him till he’s six months. His body, immune system and brain will be forever greatful for it.
Yes, 5 to 6 months will be fine. Your baby will let you know anyway. Some children will start sooner than others. It is usually better to test when the baby can sit by her/himself. The packaging on the baby food gives you a good indication of when the baby is ready. Check the labels.
Ummm, not even close! The soonest should be 5-6 months old WITH your pediatrician’s ok.
NO!!! A baby’s digestive tract is NOT ready for at least 6 months and even up to 1 full year. Don’t rush the solids or you’ll be setting him up for possible allergies!!
My little guy was only 2 months old when I started him on rice cereal, the milk just wasn’t enough. When I made it of course I added a little extra breast milk to make it a little runny. At about 4 1/2 months he started eating the beginner foods made for under 6 months. And at 6 months, he was well on his way eating 2 meals a day consisting of a fruit and a vegetable made for 6 months. He also had cereal for breakfast and sometimes before bed.
The rice rusks and the new baby puffs (flavored) are great to try at 6 months too. They melt in their mouths (of course I had to make sure).
Every child is different, but sounds like your little guy was like mine, he was just ready. He is now 9 months and eats quite a bit of food not from a baby jar now, mind you I cut it up and make sure it’s mushy.
ask your pediatrician if you can start with rice. Most pediatrician’s want the child to start with rice.My son been on rice since 2 months cuz my son ped. put him on.Ask.My son is know 4 months and the doc put him on baby food. Well my son will be 5 months soon.Ask your child ped.Don’t ask these people on here you will get differnet answears.http://www.health.state.ny.us/prevention…
you can also go to gerber.com
But I would call your child ped to find out for sure
I don’t know… but it is never TOO soon to spell correctly.
You don’t want your child to grow up any quicker than they have too. In my opinion I think you should wait until he is alittle older. The doctors say that you should wait until 6months of age and then wait to introduce new foods after three to five days.
It’s too early. It’s not about his strength but ability to swallow. Just keep breastfeeding him. Your milk will change and become more “fatty” to support his needs.
i know its so tempting to start baby on foods but having put my daughter on baby food at 8 weeks old i learnt the hard way cos it messed her system up and then i couldnt get her to eat anything meaning doctors intervention and hospital feeds.
I would STRONGLY advise that you hold off solids until the baby is ready, you will kow when baby is ready as it wont settle on just milk feeds and at first you will be making more feeds until you realise its actually time the child starts solids. It is advised no baby under 4 months should be introduced to solids and even then baby rice at first. but reccomended if you can wait till 66 months to do so. It is so cute feeding baby at first but it soon gets boring so id leave it till baby is ready,,, you will have your feeding times soon enough.
Yes honey, it is WAY too soon to even think about adding solid food!! You are doing a magnificent job of feeding your little one! He sounds like my babies! They were always at the top of the weight charts but they turned out tall and slim. My boys are all over 6 ft. tho my daughters are petite.
Keep up the good work, you are doing great. You are one of those lucky women for whom breastfeeding just seems to come naturally, you are very lucky, and so is your precious little boy.
Don’t mess up a good thing by adding solid food. Remember when you do add solid food (at about 6 months) that you are replacing a superior food with an inferior one. There is nothing you will ever give your baby that is as good for him as your breastmilk. Always let him nurse first when he is hungriest, that way he will get the benefit of your milk first and then let him try what solid food he wants, when he is older!
Breast is best honey and you are doing a great job! If it is not broke, don’t fix it!

I would wait until at least 4 months. Even though your baby is ready is some ways, inside he isn’t going to be ready until about 4 months… and that is the minimum. Some people wait until 6+ months.
You might be excited to try the next new thing or worried that he isn’t getting enough to eat, but just try and wait a little bit yet… and then start slow… only once a day for a couple weeks, then twice a day and then you can introduce other things. And when you start, start with rice cereal or oatmeal mixed with fruit juice. It will help prevent constipation.
Good luck!
The rule when my girls were born was 4-6 months when baby cereal begins. Rice first , mixed , then cereal mixed with fruit. It doesn’t sound like your child is under fed. Your milk must be great. If he isn’t sleeping for a 4-5 hour stretch check with your doctor. Perhaps he will let you try just a little cereal to help hold your child over night. There really isn’t a reason to rush feeding.
no he’s not. eventhough he supports his head and sits well, his digestive system is not mature enough for solids.
i know that some parents give solids to babies around this time but i would advice you to wait till he is at least 5 months.
no 13 weeks is fine ive had 6 children and all of my were starting to eat baby food at 12 wks.he will be fine
Starting with cereal would be your best bet. You can mix it in with a bottle, or mix it with a small amount of breast milk. This should satisfy his stomach more and not be too much on his little system.
I would start with some rice or some cereal mixed in a bottle of formula. Cut the tip of the nipple on the bottle so it can easily get through.
