Is It Okay To Give First Step Baby Foods To A 3 Month Old?
28 December 2009
i occasionally give me son some supported sitter puree foods. he loves them, and it helps him sleep. he does not like the rice cereal i give him. is this okay for now?
I would speak with your doctor since you have introduced solids way before the recommended time (which is at least 4 months for rice cereal but more towards the 6 month point for puree foods). Your son may love them but his digestive system may not be ready for this so please speak with your doctor because it is not unheard of starting them early but when it is a case of starting them on it early it is usually because the formula does not satisfy them ( so they are eating more then 5 ounces per feed), head control, stability and other factors that the doctor puts into consideration. Otherwise babies that young only need formula/breast milk!
Most doctors reccommend waiting until 6 months before starting solids, so I’d make sure you’ve checked with your doctor first. You also need to make sure you are introducing the new foods safely. Again, most doctors suggest starting with rice cereal, or some other plain solid. They will then tell you to introduce fruits, usually apples, pears and bananas. These foods should be the only solids he has for 3-5 days, so you know what he is reacting to if there is an allergic reaction. After the baby has been on fruits and cereal for 3-4 weeks, the doctor will tell you to go ahead with orange veggies, usually carrots, squash, and sweet potatoes. Again, these should last 3-5 days each.
The doctor will also tell you how often to give your baby solids. You start once a day, usually dinner, then move to twice a day (breakfast & dinner), etc.
well i would start out giving small amounts to see if his little tummy could handle it but my mom gave my twin sister and I ceral the day we came home from the hospital and all my sisters have with there childern they just start out small amounts to make sure they dont get a tummy ach good luck
i’m not sure! i have a three month old as well and it seems like the breast milk just it’s enough for him anymore. I have been giving him formula with the milk but whenever your child goes in for there 4 month check up ask your doctor thats what i’m doing.
No this is not ok. Babies shouldn’t even begin rice cereal until 4-5 months. Purees shouldn’t be introduced until about 6 months.
at 3 months their immune system isn’t strong enough to digest anything but breast milk or formula
He is 3 months old! He needs to be on breastmilk or formula ONLY.
Honestly if he didn’t have an allergic reaction and he swallows ok then it’s fine. I started my baby at 4 months and he loves 1st stage foods and cereal.
